2.0 out of 5 stars Poor finale to an otherwise great BBC production of the tetralogy, 5 Aug 2011
This production is only worth watching because it is the only one presenting the full text (well nearly full) to be available on DVD. The previous installments of the tetralogy by the BBC were quite good, in fact Henry VI part 1 is truly excellent, but it's a steady declension after that, as the story enfolds towards what sadly comes as an anticlimax. The fault of it really lies with Ron Cook who gives a very flat performance, with neither nuance, humour nor subtlety, and which besides gets completely outshone by the rest of the cast. Having no charisma, Mr. Cook resorts to playing Richard as a mere knave when we all know that he has to be much more formidable and multifaceted than that to become believable! The part should have gone to Mark Wing-Davey who played Warwick earlier on. He surely would have made a stronger impression on our imagination!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great comedy, very poor dvd layout!, 5 April 2011
On receiving the DVDs of this fantastic comedy, I was astonished to find that there wasn't anything either on the box, nor on the discs themselves to indicate what episodes were included in them ! You actually have to insert each one in your player to find that out and try and memorize it ! It even gets worse when it comes to the second set which includes series 3 and 4. For there, they actually went through the trouble of giving arbitrary name-titles to each chapter for each episode and yet somehow managed to omit the main title of the episode ! Instead you're just left with numbers and you have to play the beginning of each episode and watch out for the title just after the intro ! Even great fans of the series won't necessarily remember in what order these episodes were originally transmitted ! I really do wish the BBC would rethink about outsourcing when it comes to the publishing of their old classics. Yet another sloppy job from PLAYBACK,(the sub-brand in question who's part of the UNIVERSAL empire!). Being french, I may have no right to say that but I think the BBC shouldn't let just anybody meddle so casually with their treasures !
Hyacinth would be appalled !

4.0 out of 5 stars A Must yet..., 14 Jan 2010
This review is from: Noel Coward Collection [DVD] (DVD)
This dvd set does contain some jewles which, not being obtainable elsewhere, will make it definitely worth buying for any Noel Coward fan. "Present laughter" and "Song at twilight" ,for instance, are real masterpieces served by unforgettable performances (Deborah Kerr, Donald Sinden and Paul Scofield). They alone should win over those still reluctant to acknowledge Noel Coward as a genius.
However, there is one major flaw to this BBC release. The audio-plays from the archives which are "offered" here as "bonuses" are actually not transferable to either ipod or cd and have to be listened to on a computer or tv set! It's a great shame since some of those are excellent indeed! The best of them being "Private Lives" with Stephen Fry and "Hay Fever" with Judi Dench. Both were previously released on audio-cassettes only and since the BBC has recently produced new radio versions of them, they're quite unlikely to be re-released on cd! Pity!
