5.0 out of 5 stars Lady Day's Later Years, 24 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Maybe that wonderful voice wasn't quite what it was but this compilation shows that Billie hadn't lost the timing or the feeling for the songs.

Comprising 10 original LP's first issued on Clef or Verve (in recording order rather than release, I think) and some additional tracks, too

The LP's are

Billie Holiday
An Evening with Billie Holiday
Billie Holiday Sings
Lady Sings the Blues
Stay With Me
Music for Torching
Songs for Distingue Lovers
Body and Soul
Velvet Mood
All or Nothing at All

More than 6 hours of music, well remastered and the playing is exemplary and all at less than 20. A bargain

4.0 out of 5 stars The master at work, 12 Dec 2013

An excellent and worthwhile box set (and very reasonably priced, too) including 9 albums originally released in the 1950's and some that hadn't previously been available on CD. The sound is generally very good and the band (almost inevitably) on great form.

The individual CD's (most of which have extra tracks) are nicely housed in cardboard replica LP sleeves and the whole thing comes in a flip lid box with a brief but informative booklet including most importantly full recording details and personnel. Hard to pick out favourites but Black, Brown and Beige has always been a favourite of mine and Ellington Indigos is simply sublime. I was surprised how much I enjoyed Blue Rose with Rosemary Clooney supplying vocals

5.0 out of 5 stars A better way to remember the war to end all wars, 12 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Robb Johnson's updated version of the family history chronicling his two grandfather's involvement in the first world war and it's aftermath is at times touching, angry and occasionally funny. Roy Bailey reprises his part as Harry and Ernie from the earlier and long deleted version and his older voice really highlights the suffering that men at the front line had to endure. Barb Jungr's wonderfully expressive singing also adds an extra dimension to the women's voices. The accompanying music is at times jaunty but somehow totally appropriate. There are stand out songs (Dead Man's Pennies and The Silence of the Salient for example) but it as a whole that the experience really hangs together.

The book that accompanies is printed on high quality paper and crammed with photos and memories. All in all an excellent production.

Buy this but even better get out to see a live performance if you can. Is it better than the original? Impossible to say but it is different and with the centenary of the outbreak of the great war almost upon us totally relevant

4.0 out of 5 stars The Empress of the Blues, 24 July 2013

The music is magnificent even if some of the accompaniments are a little wooden, but not when Joe Smith or Satchmo are there. Not perhaps the best remastering but Bessie's majestic voice still shines through. Great value and a nice booklet make this an essential purchase for lovers of classic blues

A beautiful looking book but I would have liked a bit more informative text. It is a good souvenir if, like me, you have completed the walk recently

4.0 out of 5 stars Some early classics, 24 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Another excellent release in JSP's Rembetika series. Many of the great names are here (Roza Eskenazi and Rita Abadzi are very well reprsented) but for me hearing so many unknown or at least unheralded singers who cut just a few sides makes the whole thing especially interesting. Don't expect high fidelity though. These are historic recordings (the oldest dates from 1908) and some are still very crackly in spite of the excellent restoration work that has been done to render them istenable. If you like the Greek blues, this is an essential purchase

Not quite in the same class as Prodigal Son but still a very good record with telling contributions from especially Danny Thompson, Andy Cutting and Jon Boden. Hihly recommended

A perfect follow up to Once Upon A Time sees Robb and the band rock their way through a mixture of songs with a social conscience (When Tottenham Burned and Rupert Says, for example) and simple but beautiful love songs like Falling Down With You. The addition of Tim on lead guitar has given the band a new cutting edge which suits the songs very well. Robb remains one of our undiscovered treasures and is certainly a very thoughtful and prolific songwriter. Perhaps some are put off by his reputation as a protest singer but that's only part of the story. He is far more as this CD can attest. Catch him and the band live if you can. You won't be disappointed

I needed a replacement for an adaptor that I had conspired to lose and this dooes the job well. It is a genuine Dell product and works just fine. Little that I can add.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still great after all these years, 11 Aug 2009

I bought this when it was very cheap to replace my old and worn out vinyl. It's still a great record, my particular favourites being the title song and Dayton Ohio but God's Song and Political Science are as meaningful now as they were all those years ago when first recorded. Highly recommended.
