Lawless Frontier & Randy Rides Alone [DVD] [1935] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Lawless Frontier & Randy Rides Alone [DVD] [1935] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Dvd ~ John Wayne

4.0 out of 5 stars "The Lawless Frontier" (1935) & "Randy Rides Alone" (1934), 27 May 2013
1---"The Lawless Frontier"
Cast: John Wayne, Sheila Terry, George "Gabby" Hayes, Earl Dwire, Yakima Canutt, Jack Rockwell
Earl Dwire supplies a deliciously ripe performance as a half-breed outlaw in this early John Wayne Western from Monogram. After killing John's father, Zanti (Dwire) attempts to abduct pretty Ruby (Sheila Terry), but the girl is saved in the nick of time by John. Unfortunately, the bumbling sheriff (Jack Rockwell) not only mistakes John for one of Zanti's outlaws, but also accuses him of killing Ruby's grandfather, Dusty (George Hayes). The latter, however, is still very much alive and John tracks Zanti into the desert where the outlaw perishes after drinking poisoned water. With the boss villain dead, John goes after the entire gang who is eventually trapped in Dusty's mine.
2---"Randy Rides Alone"
Cast Yakima Canutt,John Wayne, Earl Dwire, Herman Hack, George "Gabby" Hayes, Tex Phelps, Alberta Vaughn, Mack Wright
n perhaps the most haunting opening of any B-Western, Randy Rides Alone has John Wayne enter a deserted saloon filled with corpses. To the tinny strains of a player-piano and with someone eerily peeking from behind a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant, Wayne's reconnaissance ends with his arrest for murder. No B-Western ground out in five days for around $10,000 could possibly live up to this introduction and Randy Rides Alone quickly gets down to business as usual. But director Harry L. Fraser and scenarist Lindsley Parsons still manage to get in a couple of off-beat touches. The killers, lead by stunt-man extraordinaire Yakima Canutt, are holed up in a cave picturesquely hidden behind a waterfall, and future comic relief George \"Gabby\" Hayes, looking for all the world like Lionel Barrymore, plays a mute, hunchbacked shop-keeper who may not be all he appears. Add to the mystery elements some extraordinary stunt-work by Canutt and you have a superior series Western. Cecilia Parker, one of the more gracious actresses to appear in low-budget fare, was all set to co-star as the murdered saloon owner's niece, but Wayne came down with the flu and production was delayed. When producer Paul Malvern was ready to begin again, Miss Parker proved unavailable and had to be replaced with 1924 PAMPAS Baby Star Alberta Vaughn, an actress whose career was all but over. Randy Rides Alone did little to alter that fact but the film remains a minor classic of the genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars was well worth watching for nostalgia's sake if nothing else, 15 Oct 2012
This review is from: Songs That Won The War [DVD] (DVD)
Songs that won the war is not the usual type of DVD that one would expect to find in a high street music chain but for those of us who are musicians and love the music of that era this is a must see. Combining archive footage of the second world war and the songs sung by - in many cases - the original artistes including Bing Crosby, Vera Lynn, Ann Shelton and Flotsam and Jetsum this DVD is well worth a look at. The obvious sound quality is not the greatest but then we are talking about recording equipment of 60+ years ago. It would, however, have been nice if some of the tracks could have been digitally remastered just to see how that might have worked. The menu allowed you to watch each track individually so you could dip in and out at will.
A very enjoyable peep into the war years. It was great to see the artists that performed during those preilous years. Some of the songs still familiar to many today, and loved by many who remember them the first time round!
And through original artist performance, movie and newsreel footage - brings to life the songs that lifted the spirit of a nation. plus To add to the authenticity, Dame Vera Lynn presents this wonderful DVD.Includes the classics: We'll Meet Again / Sally / Wish Me Luck / As You Wave Goodbye / The White Cliffs Of Dover / As Time Goes By / Thanks For The Memory / And many more...

This review is from: Girl on the Bridge [DVD] (DVD)
A girl on a bridge is preparing to take her own life. Adele (Vanessa Paradis) looks determined to jump but a passing stranger offers her an alternative ending. Gabor (Daniel Auteil) is a circus act on the search for a new assistant but is this where all knife-throwers like him find their new targets or is this just love at first sight?

Adele takes a gamble on fate and enters Gabor's strange but exciting world. As a double act they breathe life into each other and rediscover good fortune. With Gabor's skill and Adele's stunning looks they take their act to the edge and are soon thrilling audiences across Europe.

Adele is in debt to Gabor for her new confidence in life and is sure it will help her find Mr Right. However, the moment they are apart, luck deserts them and it is only now that they truly realize the effect they had on each other.
WHAT CAN I SAY? If anything outshines the acting in this movie,it's the dialogue. It's very witty and clever, with great timing.
Vanessa Paradis once again is on top form, along with Daniel Auteuil playing his part with a great deal of conviction.
The story being this girl,Adele, about to jump off a bridge because she feels her life is going nowhere. Along comes Gabor, who offers her a job as his assistant (for his knife thowing act),not quite filling her in on all the details. She accepts and goes along for the ride, worrying Gabour with her promiscuous ways. It soon turns out that Gabor may well need her more than she needs him, when they fall out and realize their lives are missing something. It soon asks the question, who saved who on that bridge, and this film tells that story in a brilliant style.
All in all,
so superb!
so Magical
so exquisite
so unique
so enchanting
so romantic
It also works brilliantly in black and white
as for a comedy it will stay in your heart and leaves a lasting impression.

The Graduate [DVD] [2001]
The Graduate [DVD] [2001]
Dvd ~ Dustin Hoffman

5.0 out of 5 stars Not only so Inspiring and so uplifting it is A genuine classic, 30 July 2012
This review is from: The Graduate [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
(THE FILM) In his first major film role, Dustin Hoffman, plays an ultra-naïve college graduate who's seduced by a middle-aged woman, played by the scintillating Anne Bancroft, and then falls in love with her daughter.

With the sharpest of scripts and a perfect soundtrack by Simon & Garfunkel, this film was deservedly nominated for 6 Oscars and won Nichols an Academy Award for Best Director.
WHAT CAN I SAY?
This film not only is a great comedy, it is also a great commentary on moral values and the generation gap. At the time it was released, America was in the middle of its own cultural revolution when the youth culture began to question the values of society and rebel against them. Dustin Hoffman is perfectly cast as Benjamin, who is at first naive and then begins to question why he is being used by the much older Mrs. Robinson, brilliantly played by Anne Bancroft.

The film also can be seen as a commentary on the games people play when it comes to sex. At the beginning of the affair, Mrs. Robinson is in control, however she loses that control when Ben meets Elaine and falls in love with her. She then feels that the only way she can regain control of the situation is by telling her daughter about the affair. This film is definitely a great commentary on one of the most turbulent eras of all time. The film that made Hoffman a star. Rarely has he managed to get close to the level of excellence displayed in his fantastic performance. Directed with style and skill by Mike Nichols this film has aged surprisingly well, aided by the wonderful soundtrack.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Trip - The Perfect Trap, 12 July 2012
This review is from: The Tourist [DVD] (DVD)
Starring A-List superstars Johnny Depp (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Angelina Jolie (Salt), The Tourist is an edge-of-the-seat action-adventure, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Paris and Venice. When Frank (Depp) crosses paths with the mysterious and seductive Elise (Jolie), his holiday takes an unexpected and dangerous turn. When armed assassins chase him from his hotel room in a hail of bullets, Frank begins to understand that he and Elise have been drawn into a deadly game of cat and mouse. As the net begins to close around them, Frank soon realizes that to escape with his life, he will have to learn to fight back.... or die.

Directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others) and written by the legendary Julian Fellowes and Christopher McQuarrie (), The Tourist is a sexy and glamorous action thriller.
what can I say ? This was a romantic comedy with a great cast, the backdrop of the two most romantic and beautiful cities in the world and some good action sequences that were all put together with exceptional taste
it is Extremely Charming,
it has Beautiful Music, Angelina, Johnny and Venice Never Lovelier Everything is absolute perfection, from scenery, to the color of Venice's waters , to casting, to every hair in place, to superlative acting, to timing, to a perfect train ride through a impossibly lovely countryside, to scrumptious scenery throughout, to perfect accents, melodically modulated voices and soundtrack.

Angelina has not ever looked more flawless,or acted more flawlessly she is full of seductive grace in this film she is a lovely combination of strength and vulnerability driven by a heart that caused her to betray her professional imperative for the man she loves .
Johnny Depp is a masterpiece of bumbling charm as the tourist out of his depth.
This movie is going back to the old films, in which action is not the main point of the film but the characters are interesting enough to make you pay attention and see if you can guess who's who and what's what ..
The supporting cast is very good, Paul Bettany and Timothy Dalton and Steve berkoff
from the writer of The Usual Suspects and just as that film there' is a big twist at the end...
all in all this is a truly enjoyable.
The plot has a lot of humor,
it has a lot adventure,
its like a very good book full of mystery and good romance;
but unlike a good book where you have to imagine this beautiful glamorous and mysterious women ?
this magic of this film is that a mystique about her.

I PROMISE YOU THIS !!!
YOU WILL FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL MYSTERIOUS WOMEN ON THIS TRAIN ?
SHE WILL STEAL YOUR HEART !!
LIKE SHE DID STEAL MINE

5.0 out of 5 stars Fred and Ginger's ability to light up the screen is truly amazing, 5 July 2012
..Flying Down To Rio and The Gay Divorcee ....
BOTH FILMS Featuring: Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers
1- .(((Flying Down To Rio))))
This is the first of the famous Astaire-Rogers musicals, about an American bandleader who romances a pretty South American socialite on two continents. The highlights are a production number on the wings of a moving airplane, and, of course, the overall chemistry between the two stars, which we were soon to see much, much more of.
Songs include: "Music Makes Me," "Carioca," "Orchids in the Moonlight," "Flying Down to Rio." "Flying Down to Rio" marks the first screen pairing of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
one thing left to say?
Flying Down To Rio IS
Too big for the world...
So they staged it in the clouds...
Too beautiful for words...
So they set it to music!

2- (((The Gay Divorcee)))
After supporting roles in Flying Down To Rio sent their movie careers soaring, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers starred for the first time in this delightful escapade about marriage, divorce and all the romantic comedy complications in between. The Gay Divorcee seat the style, tone and behind-the-camera talents for Astaire/Rogers classics to come and captures five Academy Award® nominations, including Best Picture.
what can I say?
Of the nine Fred and Ginger movies, this is possibly the most charming. It is archetypal for the species -- boy meets girl, misunderstanding develops, misunderstanding resolves, boy gets girl. No villains to speak of, no blood. Lots of music and fun. The paper-thin plot makes it all the more fun. Nobody is taking anything seriously, everybody's in it for the good times. A rendition of "The Continental" is a very stylish song and dance number. A very young Betty Grable stops in for a quick vignette in "Let's Knock Knees". The Italian Lothario, played by Erik Rhodes, is one of the funniest comic characters ever. Comedic standard character actors Edward Everett Horton and Eric Blore aren't far behind him. Even if you were in the mood for any film , you won't be able to ignore the natural enthusiasm and love of life in this film.

Intimate Strangers [DVD]
Intimate Strangers [DVD]
Dvd ~ Sandrine Bonnaire

5.0 out of 5 stars This movie explores a relationship of the mind...., 22 Jun 2012
This review is from: Intimate Strangers [DVD] (DVD)
--(THE FILM)-She confused him for a therapist and told him her deepest secrets. Now, two people who never should have met are discovering there's nothing more seductive than the truth. When a French woman tells her marital troubles to a man she mistakes for a psychiatrist, they soon form an unusual relationship...
WHAT CAN I SAY?
This is a very clever film with a lot to say about life, death, sex, human relationships, human fragility and loneliness - but it does it all with a wonderfully light hearted touch.
INTIMATE STRANGERS is an elegant film...it has the feel and pace of an old noir film of the past where an equally beautiful and mysterious woman walks suddenly into the office of a private eye on some dark, stormy night...
Leconte deals with the mind of a woman...revealing her deepest thoughts and desires...
teasing us with every appointment between the two strangers...
Bonnaire is intense & uninhabited as the distraught Anna and Luchini is the perfect compliment to keep the mode and atmosphere light when it needs to be..
this is a very Gorgeous looking film
the camera work is almost excellent,
it is shots over the shoulder as if we are spying on them it seem almost voyeuristic...
as if we are eavesdropping or tailing the characters.
The concept if the film is so brilliant it helped by the clever Writer for its scenario and dialogue .
it is Superb,
it is so absorbing
it is very psychological
The humor is beyond description.
and most of all it is (An Original)
Don't let this one slip by.
It is a must for serious movie viewers.
I can only say?
..This is a strangely Intimate Film

Those who survive the ghost ship are better off dead! A cruise ship heading for the Caribbean crashes by a mysterious vessel, leaving seven plucky survivors to crawl on-board the unholy ghost ship. this is a Superb horror, with loads of 80s style shocks, from creepy ghost like settings to full blown gore, and with bits of added humour to calm things down..
The ending is well-conceived and extremely gruesome. Effective music score too.
