5.0 out of 5 stars Great product., 22 Dec. 2014

The usual Tamiya excellence. Looks tremendous, and more robust than some other models. Why all modelling companies don't supply a single piece hull, I don't know. Clear instructions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's good!!, 20 Dec. 2014

Yes, it is as good as everyone else says. It meanders and in the final section seems to give up the war with a shrug...but I suppose that was the nature of the Battle of the Atlantic. By mid-1943 the Allies had won, and the German Kriegsmarine was a nuisance rather than a threat to overall Allied victory.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read., 20 Dec. 2014

Tremendously well-written, this reads like a novel rather than a work of non-fiction. Despite being very familiar with the story, my interest was sustained all the way through. Many good anecdotes and quotes from survivors. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!, 4 Dec. 2014

A rather fascinating read. We don't tend to hear about British submariners in either World War, so this is a welcome revelation. The author includes plenty of material about life on board for the crews. Excellent!!

Arctic Convoys 1941-1945
Arctic Convoys 1941-1945
by Richard Woodman
Edition: Paperback
Price: £14.88

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and detailed., 23 Nov. 2014
All very interesting, however it reads a little like a list: a lot of the convoys were of course rather similar, and in some chapters you think 'hang on, I'm sure I've already read this bit'. I would have liked more description of life on board, how the men worked, slept, ate, survived, etc. Still, a very informative account.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very readable and interesting., 23 Nov. 2014

Fascinating stuff, although admittedly not a literary classic. I think the main difference between this and Das Boot is that the latter manages to convey the tension of the periods spent at sea out of battle. In Iron Coffins, however, it's pretty much non-stop warfare. I would have liked more description of life on board: what was it like, who were the men, what was the food like, how did they overcome the fear, etc. Still, a highly recommended book.

Arrived on time and in good order, but the two halves of the hull don't fit flush together. Thus, the foredeck doesn't sit flush either. Most frustrating. I think I'll stick to Tamiya from now on for ship models...

Citizen Sailors: The Royal Navy in the Second World War
Citizen Sailors: The Royal Navy in the Second World War
by Glyn Prysor
Edition: Paperback
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and fascinating, 2 Nov. 2014
A superb book, this one. It is very readable, without lapsing into chatty informality. It is full of clearly explained facts, as well as fascinating anecdotes. The writer has avoided traipsing through a list of operations, and has instead offered up the whole story of WW2 sailors. Tremendous, moving, memorable.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's not a Tamiya., 29 Oct. 2014
Basically, it doesn't fit together flush. That's annoying...I don't claim to be an expert modeller, and I'm sure someone with better skills than me could adapt the pieces to fit, but I like model kits that fit. ALL RIGHT?!! There's a gap right at the bow, where it cannot be disguised. A bit disappointing, to be honest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable product!, 5 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's a really good product. Packaging and instructions are all fine. The only criticism is: some of the components (e.g.: the aft flag pole, part of the forward mast) are so fragile they've actually broken on the sprue. It's only 2 or 3 parts, but it's irritating. I didn't experience it with the Tirpitz model, but I did with the Prince of Wales model. Otherwise, it's tremendous and I highly recommend it. Delivery was within 48 hours.
