No-one Knows What I'm Going Through: The Secret Plague of Asbestos
No-one Knows What I'm Going Through: The Secret Plague of Asbestos
by B McKessock
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars I hope the author is being rewarded for this one, 5 Jun. 2013
If readers of this review look at the reviews of the author's first book "Mesothelioma: The Story of an Illness" [1874640211], they will see what the author has written a review that mentions, inter alia:

"For the original book I received only royalties of £134 which I gave to our local Hospice many many years ago and I have not received anything since then so I have no idea where the new supply of books is coming from or who is gaining from them. I actually do not care about money (or I'd be suing someone)"

So I hope she is receiving something for this one. The publishers of her first book are Argyll Publishing, so they should know who is getting monies for that book.

Meditation for Beginners.
This DVD is excellent for two reasons:
- Its visual display of what a meditation group may look like (though there is nothing wrong with sitting comfortably on a chair)
- Its simple description of how to practice meditation, which would be an adequate reminder for those who have meditated previously.

The explanations need not have gone further than describing the basics of its practice, though the addition of forgiveness and loving kindness does try explaining its methods for releasing attachments.

The attachments are aversions (yes, we do get attached to aversions, such as hate) and wants (in all its excessive forms, such as greed, lust, dependencies such as egoism, etc.).

These attachments may be understood in another way as being part of sanskara (the Hindu concept of imprints left on the subconscious mind by experience), or saṅkhâra (Pali), the Buddhist concept of "formations". They are all ultimately reflections what has been developed in the course of our universal evolution, and what has to be relinquished to free us for further development.

An interesting method that Jack Kornfield describes is recognising attachments by naming them (as best as one can), which is a method of trying to recognise them; ultimately one needs not name them, but only recognise them for what they are, and he alludes to this in the course of his lessons. It's like recognising someone without recalling their name.

One important explanation of good (and most successful) practice is the recommendation (by Jack) that one avoids the use of mantras for focusing the mind. He explains the reasons for this at the beginning of the DVD.

However, there is some irony in his teaching shown here, and that is the use of thoughts (while supposedly meditating) in dealing with attachments (shown in the last session regarding forgiveness and loving kindness): he utters what might be described as prayer (which is an expanded form of mantra). I suspect it is a method of releasing attachments for those having difficulty of letting go of them.

For those who understand, keep it simple; stick to the basics with minimal embellishment. One may even ultimately meditate while walking, which is what disciplined practitioners ultimately do.

1.0 out of 5 stars Botched DVD manufacture, 27 Feb. 2013

Accompanying DVD is a piece of junk. None of my DVD players are able to read the DVD menu, and the DVD players show just a list of two folders named AC2 and VIDEO_TS. The AC2 folder shows MP4 files, which take up most of the space on the purchased DVD accompanying the book.

The only folder to show some useful files on my TV DVD players is the VIDEO_TS, which shows only 16 out of the 65 that display the gestures needed to understand the accompanying book. Looking at the contents of the DVD on my PC shows the 65 video files in the VIDEO_TS folder.

The book is not worth much without the full list of video clips needed to explain the contents of the book; the book also states that the DVD clips are an integral part to explaining BSL.

The only way round this for buyers who experience the same problem is to copy the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder onto a PC hard drive and use a DVD "burner" (such as Nero) to burn another video DVD (not data DVD).

One can do this by copying the aforesaid files from the VIDEO_TS folder into a folder created and named, say TYBSL, on the hard drive.

When the DVD burner burns your video DVD (it MUST be in video burning mode) from all the selected files in that folder (TYBSL), it automatically creates the required AUDIO_TS folder, and the VIDEO_TS folder with the aforesaid files into it - and whooppee-dooo, your newly created DVD works with your telly video player, showing the functional menu that is needed, plus all 65 video clips working as they should!

Stuff the copyright warning - if it don't work, fix it - you paid for it - and having to hassle to fix it. Period!!

That AC2 folder with MP4 files created by the manufacturers stuffed up the functioning of their DVD. When emailing to the seller for a solution, they did not even have the decency to reply!

3.0 out of 5 stars Online training only, 20 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Buyers to be aware that this CD (not DVD) is for online (over the internet) training only for a maximum of 12 months; thereafter the CD is worthless, as there is no (offline) interactive training software on the CD itself.

I give it at least 3 stars because of the low purchasing price for training.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superior product, 14 Dec. 2012
I ordered product (ASIN: B00008OR60) and received instead this product with ASIN: B000063VMI [EAN: 053163991005], which appears to be a similar product to the one I ordered (with 2 DVDs). Maybe the vendor (CyberSoftware) who sold me this product did not have the one I ordered.

This [EAN: 053163991005 or ASIN: B000063VMI] is made by the same producers of "Train Yourself", and is an excellent product (also with 2 DVDs). It gives video training and tests from beginner to advanced levels. I suggest prospective buyers go for this product if ASIN: B00008OR60 is not available. I got mine brand new for about £25 nett.

Definitely deserving of at least 4 stars. It is easy to install on even Windows 2000, and may be run from the DVD instead of the PC harddrive.

Avoid purchasing ASIN: B008RIVS3U (from Lynda-dot-com), which is a mess and doesn't install at all well, and not at all on Windows 2000. I lost £31 on that one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Amazing history and scenery, 12 Dec. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is one of David Belamy's DVDs, being about Scotland in this case.

What's amazing about this documentary (and perhaps the others that he has done), is its mix of socio-economic and natural history (with beautifully captivating scenery) up until before the end of the last century. One of its sections discusses renewable energy prospects in Scotland.

He does not hold back on what he sees as the facts of what has happened to the Scottish countryside. In other words, he tells it like it is, devoid of political correctness. He interviews knowledgeable people and makes pragmatic suggestions where he can, yet his speech is a mixture of prose and poetry when extolling parts of the countryside. One cannot help find him amicable.

It loses 1 star because, while he trumpets sustainable living throughout, he also has aristocratic tastes, as he indulges in shellfish and specially prepared salmon in posh restaurants (nonetheless admitting it is food for the rich). He also perceives golf being a "normal" sport, showing himself on golf courses.

Sustainable living, alongside exotic foods and the "sport of kings" (i.e. expensive foods, and activities on expensive idle land, for the idle rich) somehow nudge my instinct as being cynically incongruent with each other. There are those who will vehemently disagree with me, overlooking their emotional attachments to things for which the serfs (supporting the rich) have little time or money.

The DVD shows him also having interviews with a few snobs (a couple of whom inherited land acquired through in land removal period of Scotland's history) who extol their support for sustainable living (For whom?). If one looks at one of the latest documentaries about skewed capitalism, the Four Horsemen [ASIN: B007AFCQWS], it shows quite clearly that the "trickle-down effect" from rich folks' activities is plain fallacy. But then, Bellamy is not (self-) educated in discerning what is real economics (as opposed to academic economics)

All in all, by the end, the DVD looks as though it was compiled solely for the purpose of promoting sustainable living with food and energy that might be provided by the waters on and around Scotland.

It is nonetheless really worthwhile acquiring.

2.0 out of 5 stars Design flaws, 1 Dec. 2012
This has the appearance and feel of a high quality (Chinese) product. It is working okay so far at the time of writing this. It can even record in the dark.

Why (initially) only 4/5 stars? Well, the video (with audio) files it produces can only be viewed with versions of Microsoft's Windows Media Player that came after version 6·4, that is with operating systems after Windows 2000. Again, why? Well, Microsoft was not prepared to provide a fix for ver.6·4 and earlier so that they could read the ASF video files (*.asf)

There may be other video viewing programs freely available on the Internet that read the ASF files, but so far I could not find any (after hours of searching)

However, all is not lost because you will have to use your television set anyway to set up the video cam, and you can replay the video files on your telly.

And, by the way, if you're wondering where the English translation is in the user manual, it's somewhere in the middle of the booklet. I fixed a little tab on the first page of the English section for future access.

Now I must catch my bloody landlord on video entering my rented premises without my permission. The bastard!

Alas since having rated this product the 1st Dec 2012 with 4 stars, I have found a serious flaw in the design of the product: my particular unit won't retain set-up information in its memory chip if it is unplugged from its power supply after it has been set up using a television. One would have to have a power extension lead long enough from the mounting point where one wants to locate the camera for use. Disconnecting the power supply after set-up causes loss of the date and time one puts in it, so when playing back the video on PC or television it shows the recordings as being its default date, which is in 2009. Not good at all. This is one of the most obvious things its manufacturer should have thought of !!

Does what it's meant to do. Easy to use and convenient. Can be easily viewed in dim lit areas. Only awkward feature is that it is not easy to hold while tuning a guitar because it does not have a clip. It is nonetheless a very good product for the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Multilingual Music Book, 26 Sept. 2012
This is a multilingual music book (German, Spanish, French, English, etc.)

The CD that comes with it provides the music that can be heard for the standard music notation shown in the book. Chord positions are also shown with the music notation.

The music notation (beats, sharps, etc.) is explained in the book as well.

Basically a very good book for beginners who want to learn to play the classical guitar without recourse to playing just classical music.

Music list: He`s Got The Whole World In His Hands, For Elise, Der Mond ist aufgegangen, Allegretto, Andantino, Amazing Grace, Spielerei, Kum Ba Yah, Andante, Romanze, Stückchen, Greensleeves, Bourrée, Capriccio, Ecossaise, My Bonnie Is Over The Ocean, Allemande.
