No instruments, songs about hunting and countryside and all things English and great harmonies. I only wish I could sing along better.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating journey into "Space", 20 May 2014

If you can ignore some of the passages of daily observations of weather and positioning by three different location methods this is an amazing trip into the "Space Travel" of Cook's day. Arrival in Rio and the problems of convincing the local government that you are on a peaceful exploratory mission - Don't even try to explain that you are going to observe the transit of Venus from Tahiti. Scurvy measures and Cooks enforcement methods are a lesson to leaders.
A bit of a chore at times but you can scan to the interesting bits. I only wish there was a way of plotting the positions on a map as you read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brushing up on French Language, 30 Jan 2014

My limited French still gets the humour in these simple stories of school and home life. Maybe dated but chucklesome with the aid of an e-dictionary for any new vocabulary. His copins at school who are always eating, teacher's chouchou, giving people coupes de poing sur le nez crop up in each story and reinforce phrases. I will probably read all of the books and be a genius in this form of the French Language which might not work for business situations.

Easy to read and silly with a little naughty (Hot and Cold, A Hand in the Bird and Physical Training) thrown in. Dahl is an interesting character and this is some more of his great humour in rhyme form. Easy to read and makes you smile.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great vision, 24 Mar 2013

Predicts the destructiveness of the Great War and following social upheaval. Not the greatest flow of story but a fascinating travel around the world during conflict.

The formatting was not consistent and I couldn't tell if this was intentional. That aside, it was great to enjoy reading The Bard for pleasure and not for exams. I hope I didn't look like a thicky but you have to speak the text to yourself to get most of the meaning. He did have a strange outlook on life though and I'm not convinced it is a great as the Victorians thought he was.

They are totally helpless when they get the giggles. I love this so much I want to publish it myself just to get it back out there.
