I made it through a quarter of this book before giving up which was a shame as I really enjoyed the first few chapters. The writer certainly sketched some very engaging characters and there were some good popcorn scares.

Ultimately, what put me off was the abundance of adjectives and over elaborate descriptions. I thought that in many parts the prose tended to bludgeon with detail rather than paint with shade. I felt the book could have done with another edit as a result.

The plot also felt telegraphed in places.

This is a short Novella, one of the first in the genre. Anachronistic in style and predictable in substance when seen through a comparatively modern lenses though still chilling in its own inimical way.

A work of vast physical and existential beauty.
A haunting master work, with an echo that stretches beyond its pages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crazy King, 21 Jan. 2015

This is Kings most bizarre journey in a while and all the more interesting for it. At meta level it's a story full of humanity and reflections on the changing patterns in life's many stages and all the bumps that come with that; of our losses and our troubles.

On its popcorn horror level the story concerns a small town preacher, the Reverend Jacobs, who wields a 'secret electricity' a la Dr.Frankenstein, to dire and horrific effect. The tale is narrated for us by troubled rocker Jamie Morton who recounts the story of Rev Jacobs; of how their lives became darkly entwined through the power of electrical revival.

Bam Bam Bam.

Blunt, bloody rat-a-tat-tat crime noir with all the blood, gas, lipstick, hypo, sex, sweat, death, punch, kink and smoke you could possibly get, as three hell bent men try to solve the Night Owl murders under the heat and hot stink of L.A.s 1950's political\crime ridden underbelly. This book is worth every dime of your hard earned cash. Read it, you dirty rat

Bam Bam Bam.

Dreadful sound quality for the price. More about brand than sound. I would not recommend. Nice design but poor where it matters.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just wrong, 17 Sept. 2013
It's 'VILLANS' not 'Villains,' as in Aston Villa not as in 'Villainy,' or the man was a 'Villain.'

The name VILLA has no relation to the word Villain.

How do these books get into print? To say this book is overly descriptive is an understatement. Very distracting and irritating. Got about 5% in and had to stop

An exceptional, astounding book. One of the best I have read in a lifetime of reading. Faith, spirit and the complexity of Human existence, in all its sorrow and magnificent, transcendent beauty, come to live in the survival story of Indian boy, Pi Patel as he attempts to overcome the ocean in a lifeboat. His only companion -a Royal Bengal Tiger. Congratulations to the author. A stunning literary achievement.
