3.0 out of 5 stars Looks great, sounds awful, 4 Dec 2013

As expected, this looks lush but the dialogue is woeful, as is some of the acting. Its Von Danikin riff is OK but not as wonderful as people seem to think. This notion of our origins was more effecively (if less flashily) explored in 'Quatermass and the Pit' some 45 years earlier.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but.., 4 Dec 2013

Like LofR 3, it just seems to go on and on. There are some good scenes but it does take itself very seriously. Bale and Hardy are good value but Ann Hathaway is not very convincing.
Still, overall, I am happy to have bought it.

This is a cute little movie about male angst and how it can be bought off by going on a cattle drive. It does have a number of funny and even touching moments and Jack Palance is great. The downside is that the men are not especially loveable or compelling and Billy Crystal's schtick can become a bit grating after a while. Nonetheless, good family entertainment.

Fragile Edge: Loss on Everest
Fragile Edge: Loss on Everest
by Maria Coffey
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting insight into the consequences of 'adventure', 3 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Marie Coffey was the girlfriend of Joe Tasker, a world-class mountaineer, who perished, along with Pet Boardman, on Mt. Everest. Although the writing is only OK, there is a raw, unvarnished power to her depiction of grief and desolation. Where the book succeeds is in showing the consequences of (predominantly) male heroics on the families/girlfriends, etc. who are excluded from their adventures. Indeed, Joe comes across as being not only gifted and driven but also selfish and pretty sexist (this was, admittedly, 40+ years ago). Interesting to compare to Joe Simpson's 'Game of Ghosts' on the barely justifiable risks climbers take and the toll those risks cause.

These were fine, if not very insulating, for a few rides but slowly but surely fell apart. I chucked them away before winter was out. Save your money up and buy something more robust.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great but not for long, 10 Feb 2013

This light was great for 6 months; light but bright, in fact. However, the on/off switch no longer works so I am compelled to get a new one. Not expensive but then, not very well made either.

4.0 out of 5 stars Luminous, 10 Feb 2013

Being a fan of Janet Baker, I felt her take on the Rukert lieder was not as compelling. However, her luminosity of tone shines through every song on this disc and underlines how her early death robbed us of a great artist.

Into The Silence: The Great War, Mallory and the Conquest of Everest
Into The Silence: The Great War, Mallory and the Conquest of Everest
by Wade Davis

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece, 10 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Whilst the subject matter has always been compelling, this wonderful book breathes new life into the stories that surround the attempt to conquer Everest. Heroism is a given with these men; Davis' triumph is to flesh them out as real and complex people, phenomenally fit, driven, flawed, generous, resolute, and tough. They climbed into the savage purity of Chomolungma, in the shadow of a monstrous war, that blighted a generation, each with his own emotional and physical scars. We learn much about the almost ethereal Mallory but Davis gives generous space to, among others, Somervell, Wheeler, Howard Bury, Odell, and Norton, equal players in the drama. It is at times unbearably moving and Davis' writing is luminous, incredibly detailed, and always gripping.

3.0 out of 5 stars Minimal pleasures, 9 Sep 2008
As someone who has loved all Max Richter's recordings, from 'Memoryhouse' onwards, I know how beautiful and resonant his work can be. This is no exception, though many pieces leave you regretting their lack of brevity. My quibble, however, shallow as it may seem, is that the running time gets shorter with each album, '24' being half the length of 'Memoryhouse'. Size isn't everything but maybe some of the pieces could have been more expansive. Lovely, nonetheless.
