3.0 out of 5 stars Too expensive for Sastriani fans, 14 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
CAUTION: the 3 stars are only for the sound on this remaster. The master's music is beyond rating with stars.

If you have already owned all these discs as a true Satriani fan and only want an improvement of sound than please think it over.
My evaluation of these remasters using equipment just short of hi end.

NOT OF THIS EARTH there is an 80% improvement in sound.
SURFING WITH THE ALIEN compared to the 1999 remaster there is a 20% improvement.Compared to the remaster which included a live dvd of Joe [2 disc package] it is worse [less dynamic and detailed, only the bass is a bit better].
FLYING IN A BLUE DREAM there is a 20% improvement.
THE EXTREMIST there is a 20% improvement.
TIME MACHINE there is a 30% improvement.
JOE SATRIANI there is a 5-10% improvement.

From here on there is an ugly surprise.
ALL the rest of the albums sound worse than the original discs! You read well. They are audibly inferior in sound, dynamics and clarity.

Personally, I think they shouldn't have bothered remastering the discs past TIME MACHINE,except if they are deaf, which I honestly doubt.
Of course there's always the extra disc which is wonderful.

3.0 out of 5 stars It gets worse each time!, 14 Jun 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
CAUTION:the 3 stars are only for the sound.Nobody can touch the music on this disc with less than a universe of stars!

I was completely disappointed at the sound of this latest re incarnation of Led Zeppelin II.Having read the reviews of previous buyers I thought I'd hear a renewed LZ II.
Alas, the sound is even worse than the 1994 first remaster. And doubly worse than the Mothership remaster.
It is more tight but less dynamic and dark. Not a sparkle anywhere.
The bonus material is good but does not compensate for the price.
I wouldn't have bought it if I knew.
PS the comparisons were made on equipment just short of hi end

An Idiot Abroad - Series 1-3 [DVD] [2010]
An Idiot Abroad - Series 1-3 [DVD] [2010]
Dvd ~ Karl Pilkington
Price: £11.00

2.0 out of 5 stars Love it or hate it?, 23 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
When I finished watching the whole series I started to doubt myself. How on earth have so many people here on Amazon found this series excellent?Am I the one who has the problem?
But better start from the basics. Not even on the dvd is there any detailed information about what is included on the discs,so here are the contents along with a brief [personal] evaluation
SEASON 1 [2 discs]
Disc 1
China--- [Pilkington supposedly goes to the Great Wall but has to pass through many irrelevant situations before reaching there and staying for 5 minutes [on the dvd].Acceptable.
India--- [this is one of the trips which was worth its expenses and your viewing. It takes you to places and situations away from the tourist attractions, except of course the Taj Mahal in the end]
Jordan,Petra--- [it is good,in fact very good if you compare it with the rest of the series]
Mexico,Chichen Itza---[a flop,no further comments]
Disc 2
Egypt,the Pyramids---[it's ok,it could be lots better]
Rio,the Christ statue---[too long until you get to the Christ Redeemer statue in the final minutes]
Peru,Macchu Picchu---[please no!he didn't even get there!]
Review---Ricky Gervais,St.Merchant and Pilkington discuss the above journeys amid doubtful jokes.
Overall comment:Why on earth should one have to watch frequent and interminable phone conversations between Pilkington and the producers instead of seeing what Pilkington had come to see, escapes me!
Pilkington's comments are ok,even interesting, but they last long,in fact why would Sky send Pilkington to the 4 corners of the earth just to show the audience his grievances and complaints without showing [adequately,at least]the places they have sent him to see, escapes me!

SEASON 2 [2 discs]
Disc 1
Vanuatu,on a desert island---much ado about nothing!
Transiberian railway---oh ,what pictures and things they could have shown on this one.The whole journey in vain!
Australia, swimming with sharks---not worth your viewing time.
Alaska,Barrow, watching the whales---too long and tedious except the scenes where they walk waist deep in the snow.
Disc 2
S.Africa,Uganda---to see the gorillas, which he manages to do in the last minutes and this is the only interesting moment of this episode.
Route 66--- skip it at any cost!
Tokyo---some interest concerning the <cell> hotel and the very expensive fish which no European can even smell.
Review--- something similar to the review of Season 1
Overall comment: same as for Season 1

SEASON 3 [1 disc]
[This time they gave Pilkington a mate-Warwick Davis..which does not improve the situation]
Venice--worth watching but always sad with irrelevant choices. Why on earth had they to come to Venice to try a jet machine [James Bond gadget]for 10 episode minutes, escapes me!
India---more irrelevant choices [play in a Bollywood film.Deplorable]but worth for the last 7-10 minutes when you get to see the Spider sisters [this you will have to see to believe!]
China---they,among others, have them dressed in panda costumes to watch pandas on the wild!!
Overall comments:the worst of the Seasons.Only worth for the Spider sisters in India.

Is this series a <love it or hate it> affair? For me personally it was <hate it>.Frankly ,I would not advise anybody to buy it just to see if he's going to love it or hate it!

2.0 out of 5 stars Lack of real material, 14 Nov 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Davidson writes well but he has not much to write about. You cannot presume to write a 350 page book about a person [and a relative at that],having scant information about him.The potential buyer is interested in the personal story promised to him by the title etc,not in the general history of the 3rd Reich.
The relevant story in this book could be condensed in 15 pages or even less!
Real researchers and period aficionados stay away!

This disc by Willie Logan is a true masterpiece of blues guitar with Jeff Beck rock touches. The cover songs are all excellent and a guitarist's paradise, with, on top, THE HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN, whose guitar treatment is truly awesome. There are several Logan compositions also very good by themselves.Do yourself a favor electric guitar fans and buy this cd at once!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dvd only!, 7 Dec 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You do not need a lot of words to comment on a Led Zeppelin concert. It is absolutely excellent.Only if they had issued the dvd alone without the cds!In fact this wonderful package is ruined by the miserable sound of the cds.If you have ears you can't listen to it more than a couple of numbers, such a wretched job have the sound engineers done!A shame!
For your own good:if you are not a Zeppelin collector and you don't care for the dvd live concert, don't part with your money!

3.0 out of 5 stars Do not go for the 5.1 audio, 20 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Straight to the point:

THE MUSIC:all who read this in order to buy probably know Jon Lord's wonderful music,so no comments about it.

THE PERFORMANCES:the arrangement and the orchestra are ok.There are no surprises.I personally have some doubts about Darin Vasilev's solo.In my opinion it does not very much fit this work. The female voice is an innovation. Some might find it disturbing.

THE 5.1 DVD AUDIO:a complete disappointment.I find this 5.1 dvd audio nearly a fraud. There is no separation of music from the rear speakers. You only get the same things you hear from the front speakers in a very very low volume. In fact I had to put my ear onto the speaker in order to find out whether it played anything.
If you're about to buy the product only for this dvd audio, don't!
Also there is something I have never encountered before. There's no navigation menu on this disc. You only get one picture which directs you to press the <audio> button on your control in order to change from 5.1 to Stereo.

THE SOUND:it could be better.A studio recording of 2011,even of a full orchestra which complicates things a little, should be <cleaner>.In my opinion the sound engineers were people from the classical business and maybe did not know or give special attention to the recording of the rock band. The rock sound suddenly blasts forth and you run for the volume button the first time you listen to the disc.

Treblinka Survivor: The Life and Death of Hershl Sperling
Treblinka Survivor: The Life and Death of Hershl Sperling

Edition: Hardcover
Price: £18.10

2.0 out of 5 stars Lacking, 21 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Hershl Sperling was transported to Treblinka from the Chestochowa ghetto. He escaped after the revolt,he was arrested on his way to Warsaw, sent to Auschwitz,Sachenhausen,Kaufering,Dachau, ended up living in Scotland with family [wife,a survivor herself, and two sons].He committed suicide in 1989.
In 1947 he had written a short account of his Treblinka experience which was published along with other survivors' stories.
The writer of TREBLINKA SURVIVOR ,Mr Smith,is a family friend and has attempted to reconstruct Sperling's life in the camps.

The problem with this book is just that there is not adequate information on its subject [Sperling] as he had never talked to Smith or his own sons much about his experiences.

Smith's book is full of conversations with Sperling's sons, details of his research journeys to Germany and Poland and historical facts. But it is empty of actual details on Sperling...simply because very few such details exist.

In my opinion this book's worth is only the reproduction of Sperling's short memoir in the end and Kurt Franz's photo in SS uniform which I at least had never seen before.

Sur - The Melody Of Life [DVD] [2002]
Sur - The Melody Of Life [DVD] [2002]
Dvd ~ Tanuja Chandra

5.0 out of 5 stars Good film at great price!, 24 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very good Indian film. The story is typically Bollywood but not cliched and the music is great.
Plot in a few words:a well known musician who also runs a music school discovers an excellent singer in a rural area and takes her to his music school. They, silently, fall in love but he is jealous and uncertain of himself as this singer and violin player develops into a star.So he does everything to ruin her, especially during her first studio recording.
Acting : excellent even from the supporting actors!
Music/Singing : excellent! The actors manage also well enough to seem to play their instruments [violins] themselves.
Dance : do not expect the colourful Indian dances of other expensive Bollywood productions. There is some dance bur nothing spectacular.
Technical : of course the music is overdubbed, probably the dialogues ,too. The wonderful thing is that whenever there are songs on this movie ,the sound turns into real 5.1 audio, very well separated and presented, immersing you into a real audio treat.I have often watched only the songs in order to enjoy this 5.1 treat.

Do not hesitate to buy!
