Life ain't easy but it's a comfort to listen to Ms Gardot who sings about disappointing experiences, yearning for a better future.

What remains is the feeling she's going to make it anyhow anyway one day.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fixer in a Welfare State, 19 April 2013

This review is from: Lilyhammer - Season 1 [DVD] (DVD)
Laughing mirror of a picturesque town in Norway, a sometimes rather boring welfare state that protects the wolf killing the sheep. At the surface everything seems neat and organized until an Italian mobster who used to fix issues in NYC appears as a result of a witness protection program. It appears not too difficult for him to convince (or to beat) the law abiding citizens (and their children) there is more in life to be gained by bending the rules a little. Result: a lively Flamingo bar, holiday resorts and a pregnant girl friend. When his cover is blown away two hitmen arrive to set things straight, the culture clash continues.

Somehow it reminds one of the very best slapstick of Oliver and Hardy.

Of course the jokes are totally incorrect. A Norwegian friend described as sometimes too much Norway.
A Dutchman and his teenage sons loved it.

Season 2 is coming up this fall, so early next year I hope to enjoy the new episodes with English subtitles: a lot dialogues are in Norse.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Book beats the Movie, 13 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: 101 Reykjavik [DVD] [2001] (DVD)
The book 101 Reykjavik is better, funnier than the movie also because the movie ends 'well', rather than - like the book - continues being a funny statement against the boredom of being a middle class person.

On the other hand the movie shows the beauty and power of (Icelandic) women, pictures of Reykjavik and glaciers. And you wouldn't like to miss these either, don't you?

Melody is exploring new worlds, Portugal/Brasil, but remains true to herself: sometimes disappointed but with a strong will to go on. Great songs and a happy end, for now.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Outback of Iceland, 12 Jan 2013

How does a misfit survives - socially - in a village of 20 persons somewhere in the North of Iceland?
Life starts when a girl from the great city of Reykjavik is sent there by her father to cool down a bit.
And the it starts to snow. Minimal art. Great fun.

3.0 out of 5 stars An Insider still in denial, 12 Jan 2013

The writer was the head economist of Kaupthing Bank, once the biggest bank, now one of the world's largest insolvencies, keen to be the first (in 2009) to publish a book about the background of the Icelandic financial crisis.

A special parliamentary committee wrote a lenghty report that there were plenty of answers to the question: Why?

The main answers: because foreigners didn't do their homework, Icelanders had little experience in international banking and investing, everybody was relying on rating agencies, denying there was no lender of last resort.
And when the billions flow in you can have a great party for a few years, but now it's over.

If you are foolish enough, like me, to want to make something out of 10th Century Norse. This book gives you translations but little context by offering examples, like common expressions etc.

Better: travel to Iceland and buy
"Íslensk - Ensk oršabók" of Sverrir Hóllmarson / Christopher Sanders and John Tucker (this book is used by Icelanders to learn English) published by Forlagiš

and

Ensk - Íslenka oršabókin of Jón Skaptason (and others including Ingrid Markan), the best dictionary English - Icelandic I could find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inside the Vatican of the turn of the 15th Century, 12 Jan 2013

A colourful explanation of the origin of Protestantism. The Borgia pope was certainly not a holy man, and the last stop before God, but a human, a Catholic King, who must rule a country. Beautifully crafted, with excellent stars.
And despite her reputation, I really liked Lucrezia Borgia now.

Excellent and funny explanation of the rise and fall of a story too many people wanted to believe although it couldn't be true. And it wasn't. 'Mundus Vult Decipi' as a 2,000 old Roman saying goes. What next?
