5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent device, 24 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is a really useful thermometer. Nicely packaged, easy to use, Quick Start guide and brilliant to take temperatures for babies, kids and adults.

In the box you get the unit, two AA batteries, a manual and a quick start guide. Open the battery compartment by sliding it open, put the batteries in, press the On switch, hold near the recipients forehead and press the thermometer button. Took my temperature in approximately 2 seconds. The screen goes green if it's in the normal range, amber if the temperature is slightly elevated or red if it's higher.

You don't need to touch the forehead with it and you can turn the beep noise off as well which is perfect if you have a sick child who is asleep.

A brilliant device and well designed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pricey but great design, 23 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
First the negatives, they are on the pricey side although they are well made.

Theseare a great design. I have a few recipes that require fine grained sea salt or coarse so have had to use mortar and pestle alongside my cheap salt mill. This allows you, with ease, to change the grain size by just rotating the base for both mills. The one hand design is also very nice to use and not much pressure is required to action the devices.

To fill them you just pop up the top lid (I only found that from a review here as nothing shows you how to do it). The handle although plastic, doesn't detract from the design. They also come partially filled so you can get started straightaway.

Glad I've got them as I'll be using them regularly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great idea and decent price, 22 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Would've given 5 stars but it took me a few minutes to work out how to take the safety off. It's actually written on the side although didn't immediately make sense.

Other than that, this is a brilliant product. Packaged nicely and comes with a removal tool and three boxes of "ammo": 180mm nails, 10mm cable staples and 8 & 12mm staples so you can start nailing/stapling straightaway. It can be used for a variety of applications from flooring to upholstery to fencing and general DIY.

Product comes with the safety on so you notice the handle is pressed down. Unclip the chamber, put in chosen nails/staples, close and snap shut the chamber. Make sure the toggle near the end is set right and then you push the handle in and the safety is removed.

The gun is nicely weighted and not as much effort is required as I initially expected. The device also comes with a removal tool just in case you go staple mad.

Great price so am going to buy one for a family member.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive and cheap, 21 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have not heard of the brand before and didn't expect much but I am really impressed. Currently this is just under the £20 mark and is a bargain.

They come neatly packed, easy to get into and just a pull of the battery tags and away we go. The mouse fits nicely although I prefer bigger mice but it seems the market has fewer of these for some reason. The underside of the mouse also has a slot for the transmitter device. The control is brilliant and even works on my sofa :)

The keyboard has nice sized keys and because they are not bevelled I have found my typing is more accurate. The back of the keyboard is metal so although it looks thin, it is not flimsy. The only thing is the number keys were ever so slightly misaligned but still work fine.

The battery life is apparently really good but clearly I haven't had it long enough to test yet. The distance is impressive as my Microsoft one flakes out after 3 metres, this was certainly fine at 5, box states 10 but I haven't got a room that big :)

Also has a 2 year warranty.

And my partner has now stolen it for her laptop....grrrrr.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cat loved them but not as much salmon as you'd think, 21 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Not a bad price at, currently, 56p per pouch. These pouches are labelled as for housecats and the box states they minimise hairballs, reduce litterbox odour and helps with a healthy body condition. I'm not sure how true this is as the ingredients don't shed any light on it. What did irritate me and many pet food manufacturers do this, the box and packets state "Tender pieces with salmon in gravy", which gives the impression there is a fair bit of salmon in them which is not correct (4%!). The ingredients are:

Meat and animal derivatives, vegetale protein extracts, fish and fish derivatives (of which salmon 4%), oils and fats, minerals, various sugars, derivatives of vegetable origin.

However, my housecat did love these, even before it had hit the bowl she was going mental but that was probably the smell (they are strong!). Bowl was emptied in minutes which is a good sign.

5.0 out of 5 stars Decent quality and upgradeable laptop, 17 Oct 2014
This review is from: Dell XPS L502X
I have to say this is the best laptop I've owned and is well made. It's also upgradable so I have upgraded it with a high def screen, i7 processor and even found an upgraded motherboard.

The sound quality from this is one of the best things as it has a dedicated subwoofer so avoids the tinny sound you expect from laptops.

The hybrid graphics chip is really good, maybe not powerful enough for the latest games but this design is several years old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic train, 16 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
In one word, superb. I wouldn't view this as a starter set for a child as it's an expensive start with a fragile engine. I would view this more as a second pack or maybe a starter pack for adults.

As with the majority of the Hornby sets, this comes with a neat mat which gets you started. It's clearly not a replacement for doing proper set décor but it's a nice cheap addition. The track is an oval with a siding (oval with track pack A) so you will want to add more to it particularly if you check the back of the box and start looking at what you could have. Then again, buying this and you will probably already know that you want to expand.

The engine is gorgeous with plenty of detail. Compared with my 1990's City of Nottingham, this has the edge with better painting on some of the more intricate parts. The carriages are nicely detailed as well even down to the lamps (they don't light up) on the inside of the carriage. The carriage roofs are painted silver which is a bit of a shame as the paint seems to highlight the plastic but that's being picky.

Put the track together and make sure you do it by sliding it together on the floor otherwise you'll bend the fishplates. Connect the controller which I found easier than one of the digital controllers I had as this one has a hard plastic connector that fits into the relevant track piece. Turned the controller on and the train springs to life. Being a large train it can take 5 minutes to properly get the wheels set and it seemed to keep derailing until I'd got it right...just be patient.

The controller is a little bit irritating in that my original 90's controllers were easy to switch directions, this seems a bit clumsy but it's only a cheap controller and doesn't cause me hassle to drop one star.

Very impressed and has now got me to fetch my old trains down and bring them to life buying some spares. Well done Hornby!

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb starter pack, 16 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Time to relive my youth but use the excuse of my 6 year old to do it :)

I have previously purchased the R1151 Caledonian Belle, this is similar but a bit more expensive, however, you get track pack A included in this one (approx. £15) and you get an extra wagon so is equivalent in many ways.

Box is nicely packed, includes instructions and a trackmat which is a neat idea whereby you can lay the track on top of it and have a more imaginative set. It also allows shows you further expansions you may buy (track packs).

The track is easily put together, just be warned, this is new track so the fishplates are quite stiff and it's better to place the track on the floor and fit together otherwise you may bend the fishplates. A dedicated track straight has the connector for the controller, no more fiddling with that triangular piece you had in the 80's. A buffer is included for the siding although it's only a black painted plastic one, nothing fancy.

The train and carriages fit on with ease and controller is very straightforward, one button for forward/backward and the main dial for speed. Quality of the train and carriages is good but obviously not as fancy as the more expensive packs but it gets you started which is what this one is all about.

Train moves very fast and I didn't have a problem with the controller going into safety mode like I did with the R1151 pack, not sure if this is improved or the other one was just faulty.

Overall, very impressed and highly recommended....just don't stare too long at the back of the box otherwise you'll be spending more hard earned cash on the buildings and packs :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Competent cleaner with some small foibles, 13 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I have a Dyson DC33 which has been my main vacuum cleaner for 2 years. I quite like it but it is heavy and bulky and my partner doesn't like it. Opportunity arose to test this new Vax which currently retails for £179.99, much cheaper than the cheapest Dyson.

This Vax is compliant with the amended Regulations so the energy label tells you the following details:

20.4 kw/h annum,
A for suction
A for dust particles coming out of the machine
82 Db

They have thought about the packaging so that once you open the first box flaps, it tells you if you have a problem then don't go to the shop, but go to them. It also lists the items in the box which is the cleaner, 2-in-1 tool, Upholstery tool, turbo tool, hose and a manual. For some reason mine came with two hoses which I am not going to complain about.

Instructions for assembly were okay but could be better.

Switched on and could feel the immediate power of this machine as it pulled itself away from me! Dragging it back was a bit of an effort but I'm assuming this is down to completely clean filters. You can manoeuvre it around corners but not as slick as a ball Dyson as the centre of gravity feels a little higher. Having said that, this is much lighter than my Dyson although the plastics feel cheaper. I shouldn't be too concerned as it comes with a 6 year warranty whereas Dyson offers only 5.

I cleaned the carpet with my DC33 first, before using this. Obviously I am comparing this Vax with a cleaner which has got dirty filters but I was surprised how much more the Vax pulled up. At the end of the day you get a vacuum to clean carpet and this is does well. You can stop the brush bar from turning by using a button right net to the power which is situated on top of the cylinder,

The extension tube is better than the Dyson as the Dyson follows behind you and gets very irritating, this Vax doesn't suffer the same problem. However, one annoyance and surprised devices like this get through testing with such a seemingly easy thing to fix, the utensils fit onto the cleaner when not in use but they keep falling off when doing the carpets. With a little thought I'm sure Vax can come up with some clips/holders to stop this happening.

Pros:
- Light
- Relatively quiet
- Very good suction
- A rated for escaping dust particles
- Cheaper than a Dyson
- 6 year warranty

Cons:
- Concerned about the cheaper feeling plastics
- Tools keep dropping off their holders
- Difficult to pull back - maybe this may change after use
- Instructions could be better.

All-in-all, a good cleaner which could be improved with a little tweaking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice charger with trickle charge, 11 Oct 2014
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Great price (currently £7.99) for a charger which automatically switches to trickle charging when the device battery is full. Item comes in a small box, small leaflet explaining about disposal of end of life electronics and that's it. Both connections seem solid with nothing that stands out as something that will break in the near future.

Plugs in the 12v car socket with no problems and is slightly faster than my standard charge on my Blackberry.

Only thing I would have liked is a light on the charger just so I can easily see it's working.
