The Cosmic Tourist: The 100 Most Awe-inspiring Destinations in the Universe
by Chris Lintott

Price: £20.00

5.0 out of 5 stars So much better than I expected..., 19 May 2013

I purchased this book as a present for my spouse because the title sounded like something he'd like, rather expecting a pocket with text and possibly a few pictures (based on a previous experience with similar titles). It turned out to be way more than I had ever hoped for, with gorgeous pictures and funny yet instructive text. A must-have for anyone interested in astronomy.

There are certainly much better (and adjustable) models on the market if you're going to use it on a regular basis or for several sizes, but I would definitely advise this product if you're looking for either a display dummy or a tailor's dummy for occasionally making clothes for yourself, like I am. The foot requires some minor assembling (really nothing mind-boggling!), but it is heavy and steady while the polystyrene body is extremely light, so this is definitely not something that will fall over at the slightest touch while you work. The only thing I'm not sure about is how well the body will cope if it does get knocked over, hit by something sharp or attacked by a pincushion (not that I intend to try, but accidents do happen when there's scissors and the like around). Overall, however, this is a much better product than I dared hope for at this price. If you don't need an adjustable model, there's really no reason to pay more.

Maybe this book will seem all right to people who use it in the way they would an actual dictionary or encyclopedia, i.e. to occasionally look up a scrap of information. Having read it from cover to cover, however, I am left with the impression that the authors just gathered a handful of sources and indiscriminately copied down the myth of any tribe or culture they could find the way the original authors had compiled them, without any kind of cross-referencing, completing, structuring or harmonizing. This results in some entries offering a wealth of information, while others barely contain any at all. I also got the impression that the book covers a great number of small American Indian tribes (albeit in not much detail) for the sole reason that there was a handy source available, while leaving out a number of equally or more important cultures elsewhere. This being a very vast subject with a rather limited audience, maybe the authors or editors did not find it (financially) worth investing the time needed to do a thorough job, but I find it hard to believe there's nothing better out there. I'll keep looking for a better alternative and advise you to do the same.
