4.0 out of 5 stars Bit of a tight fit, 5 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Good points: decent moulded sole, colour exactly as shown in photo, elastic panel under laces.
Not so good: they are smaller than UK standard (to be fair, this is warned in the description) but even with a size larger I struggled to get a size 4 over my high arched size 3 feet and can't get the laces tight.
But at this price I shouldn't really grumble!

Slightly difficult to unwrap - the plastic envelopes don't open easily. In addition the yellow pull tab on the cartridge doesn't always come off completely and if it doesn't the cartridge won't print. However the ink quality is fine and of course the price is excellent.

A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent (Memoir By Lady Trent 1)

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and Compelling., 27 Nov. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This novel is a wonderful mixture of adventure and fantasy set against a background of Victorian morals and manners. A feisty heroine, a Darwinian scientist, an elegant aristocrat, robber barons and a host of individual characters could have propelled the story by themselves, but add in the dragons (more monstrous animals than fairy-tale creatures) and the result is a totally original and utterly compelling read.
The illustrations are a bonus, crafted to match the era in which the book is set.
I lost myself in Lady Trent's world. I hope Marie Brennan has a sequel on the way.

1434: The Year a Chinese Fleet Sailed to Italy and Ignited the Renaissance
1434: The Year a Chinese Fleet Sailed to Italy and Ignited the Renaissance
by Gavin Menzies
Edition: Paperback
Price: £9.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Not an easy read, 10 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this as I'd enjoyed 1421 but this is much harder going, page after page of comparisons between Chinese and Renaissance theories, and not very much about the interaction of people and personalities. Like others I feel Menzies has stretched a little evidence a very long way. I just about managed to read to the end between yawns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Value, 10 Oct. 2014

I bought these for my old laptop having moved the old (and much more expensive) speakers to my new one. Completely plug and play they give just as good results for both volume and quality of sound and are very neat and unobtrusive. Brilliant purchase!

4.0 out of 5 stars Elliott goes from strength to strength, 7 Oct. 2011
As an already big fan of Kate Elliott I was delighted by the start to this new series. She has created unusual but believable characters, delivered an unpredictable narrative with enough surprises in it to keep me page-turning, and set both in a world that is both completely different but uncomfortably familiar to our own. What I particularly liked was that this is not a clear cut struggle between good and evil. The "goodies" are not perfect and the "baddies" are not totally corrupt: all shades of grey emerge as the narrative progresses. The reader is left with a desire to find out more. How will the relationships between the characters progress? What cataclysmic events will throw this world into further confusion? Yes, I definitely want to read the next book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Getting the right fit, 3 Mar. 2011
I've got small but wide feet (UK 3G) so getting shoes that are comfortable to wear all day has always been a problem. These stretchers have worked perfectly on 2 pairs of new shoes, and now I'm stretching some of the older ones.
One small problem: the washer holding the end of the length stretching tends to disappear into the middle of the stretcher when you maximise width stretching.
It would also be good if as well as "ladies" the advertisement mentioned recommended shoe sizes: although they did work for size 3 I was a little worried that my shoes would be too small.

A Pirate Of Exquisite Mind: The Life Of William Dampier
A Pirate Of Exquisite Mind: The Life Of William Dampier

4.0 out of 5 stars A buccaneer with empathy and intelligence, 27 July 2010
Every time I started a new chapter in this book there was something to delight, inform, entertain or shock me. Delight in the descriptions of the remote places Dampier visited. Information on the history, politics, morals, religion and practices of the time: I learned a lot. Entertainment in the enormous adventure of his life and his interaction with the people he met and worked with. Horror at the hardships and living conditions of life on board ship and in the fragility of life in the early European colonies - imagine having to extract a two foot long worm from your leg as Dampier did.
What I was left with was a great admiration for Dampier. Even though he was an extremely tough man he displayed a sensitivity in his interaction with the native people he encountered, and made an intelligent and systematic analysis of the physical world and the environments in which he found himself.
This book combines the best of serious history with the best of biography. My only small reservation is that while the maps illustrated in the book are reproductions of maps made by Dampier himself, it would have been nice to have an immediate comparison with current geographical knowledge - I had to constantly refer to a modern atlas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible value for money, 22 Jun. 2009
Arrived on time, within 30 minutes it was operational. And what operation! Beautiful printing, simple scanning and at very high resolution (I have some very old family photos on which I can now see details beautifully) together with high quality copying. This must be one of the best home all-in-ones on the market.
Note: it comes with a (very) short usb cable - fortunately I had a longer one so could place the machine where I wanted it. At this price I didn't expect a wireless connection - and if you have file sharing on your main PC you don't really need it.

4.0 out of 5 stars China, 1980 style, 11 Feb. 2009
This review is from: Behind The Wall (Paperback)
Thubron's typical eclectic mix of people, lifestyles, places, scenery, history, myth and politics, brings post-revolutionary China to vivid life as he travels north to south, east to west. While undoubtedly China has moved on since his journey, this book reveals as much about the minds and attitudes of its 1980s population as it does about the cities and countryside, industry and wildernesses.
Read this, if you can, before The Lost Heart of Asia and Shadow of the Silk Road. I didn't, and wish I had, although it didn't prevent me from falling under Thubron's narrative spell.
One small downside: I do wish there had been more and better maps. I had to keep referring to my own atlas (or looking on the web) to find out exactly where he was ...
