The Great Wall of Vagina
The Great Wall of Vagina
by Jamie McCartney
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, eye-opening - the ultimate coffee table conversation starter!, 9 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I discovered Jamie's artwork via the C4 documentary the Perfect Vagina and the concept knocked me sideways. He brings with him an extraordinary background in bodycasting that the book explains as well what led him to create this particular work. There are lots of stories from some of the women who participated in the project, a gynaecologist who uses images of the Great Wall to help his patients to understand that 'normal' is not the same as 'standardized'. This blows me away, a doctor using art to educate his patients in body literacy. This is a beautiful, well realized book about a seminal, profound and life-changing artwork. And signed by the artist to boot!

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for imperfect people, 29 Oct 2011
If you have experienced adultery and you get to the point that you're in this section thinking about buying a book on how to repair what was broken - as opposed to just slamming the door on the bad guy/gal - you need look no further. This is a pearl of a book that breaks down exactly the different stages you inevitably go through post-adultery, but not just for the Discoverer but also for the Discovered. This is a book to be shared with your partner. It avoids being judgemental - most relationships are not some kind of black-and-white stories with arch-villains and innocent victims - and concentrates on a pragmatic approach to rebuilding trust where it has been lost. The author draws on his extensive background in working with couples and it is well illustrated with always pertinent case-studies.

If you're considering buying this book you're already in a pretty miserable place and you're going to be reading about other people who have been there too - their stories will be depressingly familiar, adultery is not original! - BUT the author provides cogent analysis and concrete solutions that will push each of you to looking closer at yourselves and how you operate; but he also provides hope and where you're at (as a Discoverer at any rate) you need that! I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 20 April 2009
I was hoping for a good book that would cover all the basics. This is not it. I find it staggering that a wedding cake book would not feature a table telling you how many servings for cakes of the different sizes. The designs are all very samey ie quite cutesy, lots of little figurines of the bride and groom. Nothing that fell into the stylish, designy end of things. Also I felt that general techniques were given quite a short treatment, so you would have to follow a recipe rigourously to learn the techniques. This would be a good book if you were looking for a 'funny/fun' cake and a recipe to follow from start to finish. Unfortunately, I wasn't.

1.0 out of 5 stars The board book is NOT the original version!!!, 26 Feb 2008
This review is from: No Matter What (Board book)
Having already bought this 5-star book for my daughter (who adores it) I bought this one for a friend thinking the board format would be a good idea. But the text is different! The whole part that addresses death in a very simple, clear manner has been replaced by some syrupy watered down text that avoids the subject completely. No mention of this in the introduction - if I buy an abridged version, I want to know about it in advance.
