Gordianus The Finder Omnibus (Books 1-4)
Gordianus The Finder Omnibus (Books 1-4)
Price: £6.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Fancy a guided tour of Rome and its empire?, 26 Jun. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Here it is. Some of the characters are more gripping than others. That is the problem when blending 'real' figures with your own created characters. Sometimes strangely unemotional in the face of danger, both Gordianus and the writer's style. But cool!

5.0 out of 5 stars my favourite perfume, 26 Jun. 2014

What's to say? perfume is subjective, and this one is not overly floral, not drily sophisticated. Wearable on most occasions, I guess.

4.0 out of 5 stars Godd choice of a little-known queen, 26 Jun. 2014

Well-researched, so the history is sound, and with a feel for character... even one not as flamboyant as some other queens. How to survive...

The Story: Love, Loss & The Lives of Women: 100 Great Short Stories
Price: £6.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A book to savour in short tasting sessions., 24 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
You simply cannot do justice to the works here, if you try to read too many short stories at one sitting. They all deserve their in this anthology. Pick the book up, lay it aside, even to read something else, and come back to enjoy another new experience. You come to understand the categories suggested in the title. The brief introduction of each author is interesting, too. Comical, sentimental, thrilling, scary.... so much here to savour and explore.

2.0 out of 5 stars A slight historical romance, 24 April 2014

And one perforce written without the English background and awareness of changes in the language since the period.
I found the heroine's behaviour unconvincing. Try Georgette Heyer's work

3.0 out of 5 stars An early Hardy, 24 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A book of its time. One has to cast aside modern leniency to understand the mores of the time. It was also a time when reading a book was something to savour and spend time on. The painstaking descriptive details and rather repetitive recounting of emotion would have been a source of delight in an age without our modern distractions. Some occasional clumsiness of style betrays the author's inexperience, too. Interesting to a student of this period and of Thomas Hardy.

4.0 out of 5 stars An intriguing read, 24 April 2014

I found it puzzling to start, and then became increasingly involved, as the characters were subtly revealed and the final enigma at last became plain.

The Constant Princess (The Tudor Court series Book 1)
The Constant Princess (The Tudor Court series Book 1)
Price: £1.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Guess who she is..., 1 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I was held with sufficient interest to go on reading, in spite of the lack of action... in fact, that is the underlying problem facing this woman. She is held in a hapless state through no fault of her own, and is powerless. Only her constant belief in an apparently unachievable destiny keeps her alive and sane.
It is a bit of a problem for a writer, faced with hardly any active plotting,, but Gregory is expert in revealing character, even one who has so often to mask her emotions.
Towards the end there was a tendency to write history, and try to blend it with novel-writing... I cannot say 'fiction'... this is far too well researched for that.

4.0 out of 5 stars I am not surprised this made an excellent film, 27 Mar. 2014

Easier to watch than to read, too, with all the negro dialect... but so well done, and so true to life - and to the time.
The settings were well-drawn, without delaying the narrative or losing emotional intensity. Clever!

4.0 out of 5 stars In its day, this was shocking!, 27 Mar. 2014

All this living in sin! These days, no-one turns a blind eye... but in Hardy's time, so truthfully revealed here, the reader would no doubt read it in brown paper wrappings! What is still admirable is the way the author shows the layers of character, the inconsistencies and provocation that make his people so human. You really don't know whether to kiss her or slap her!
