5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely superb, 5 Jun 2014

I have bought a lot of DVDs on historical military subjects, and generally they are vintage film or photos threaded together with cheap re-enactment and clumsy graphics. Not here. This is an absolutely brilliant film with the highest production values and expertly crafted to really give a feel of what it was like to be at Gallipoli.

Certainly it gives a good narrative of the history of the campaign, and one of it's greatest strengths is that its takes all viewpoints, not just of one side or the other. But it also has many readings of letters and diaries of those that were there, along with film and photographs of the battles. There are modern reconstructions, but they are tasteful and not intrusive, and what is more they are done with excellent regard to historical accuracy and also with a very high standard of art worthy of any major feature film. The English narration is brilliant, done by the always good Jeremy Irons, and the readings are also perfect.

This is the first time that I have been inspired to reviewed anything on Amazon, and trust me, I buy a lot here. This DVD is probably one of the best and most surprising purchases I have ever made here, and anyone with an interest in this particular part of World War I really must watch this fine example of how documentaries on military history should be done.

With lots of positives and absolutely nothing to criticise, I agree with the rest of the reviewers here in easily giving it five stars. Impressive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just wonderfull!, 4 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Everyone already knows how fantastic the opening and closing ceremonies were, and how great the sport was, so perhaps it would be hard to go wrong with a highlights compilation like this. Nevertheless the BBC have done a brilliant job, and I can only echo the hundreds of other people who have rated this so highly. Sure some will be disappointed that sport x or individual y got little or no coverage, but how else do you cram 2,500 hours into 5 Blu-ray discs? The sporting highlights concentrate heavily on British performance and success of course, but the opening ceremony in particular was the major highlight for me, with a choice of commentaries (or none), and the whole thing unedited, I can't imagine how they could have done more.

A wonderful record of a wonderful event, and it still brings a lump to my throat every time I watch it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very happy with strap, 26 Jan 2013

I found this simple to order and simple to specify the text I wanted. I got a friendly and prompt acknowledgement and the strap arrived nice and quickly. It looks to be a nice strong and wide strap with a good clip and the lettering shows up really well. I went for the yellow, which is very bright and will surely make it easy to spot on the conveyor belt. Very happy indeed with the product and the whole ordering process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captures a wonderful event, 17 Oct 2012

Like everyone else I marvelled at the Olympics opening ceremony, and this collection of the music simply brings all those wonderful memories flooding back. For me, 'And I Will Kiss' is the highlight, not just for the amazing stage show but as a terrific piece of music. However if you can avoid smiling when you hear Caliban's Dream then you clearly have no emotion chip enabled. Disc 2 is more of a general mix tape - done to keep the tempo of the athletes parade upbeat, so I don't find myself going there too much. However there is some wonderful music here, and as a reminder of a wonderful night for Britain and the Olympics it really cannot be beaten. If you enjoyed the ceremony then this is a must - has cheered me up on several occasions already!

5.0 out of 5 stars Does the job and does it well, 11 Aug 2010

I have to largely agree with the other reviews about this product. The items seem well made and so far have done the job perfectly, so cannot have any real complaints. Yes the setup instructions are not as clear as they could be, and the cord on the handset is a bit short, but these are small niggles. I particularly loved the large LCD displays on both handsets, which are back lit, making them so easy to read. This feature sold it for me, but as a package this is a great product all round.

2.0 out of 5 stars Superficial, badly researched and full of errors, 12 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
To be honest my expectations were not high about this book. It covers 85 years of conflict in one book, so you can't expect more than a superficial coverage of any particular subject, and that is what you get. It's a coffee-table book with lots of lovely colour illustrations and very attractive to look at, but only good for the casual browser. If you are serious about learning details of armies and uniforms then avoid this book at all costs.

Brevity I can forgive, but this book is full of errors both in the text and the pictures. Many have already been pointed out by other reviewers and I won't bore you with others, although if you don't know that the Crimean War started in 1854, not 1844, then you have no business publishing any book on the subject in my view. Most of the illustrations are simply copied from other books, so if you already have a good library of such books then this brings nothing knew. Often the figures are officers but no ordinary soldiers, and often they are in parade uniform, when 99% of potential readers want to see actual campaign appearance. The reason is most are slavishly copied from other books and photos of reenactors, and some of these are merely repeating errors in those books. Clearly the Osprey Boxer Rebellion was been widely copied, which is a book notoriously full of errors, many of which have been repeated here. There has been no primary research and all this is is an unthinking anthology of other books with no attempt at checking accuracy.

And yes, if you promise the Balkan Wars on the cover then why are they completely missing inside? Sloppy and amateurish!

In short, its a lovely book and a good browse for anyone with no particular interest in the subject, but if you are serious about 19th century military history then you will soon discover you already know more about it than these authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product in all respects., 12 Oct 2009

Before buying this clock I read all the old reviews. It was apparent that this used to have a serious fault (ringing the alarm at midnight), but from the dates it seemed this had been fixed. Having had it for a couple of weeks I can confirm that it works perfectly, so ignore all those very out-of-date comments.

I found this was a great product. Aside from the now fixed fault, it looks good and is easy to use. Someone said it was hard to understand, but frankly some people struggle with a toaster, so if you are one of those people then yes, you may find it difficult, but for everyone else the instructions are clear, logical and very easy to grasp. I have not tried to change the brightness of the display, so I do not know what setting it is on, but I found the display fine straight out of the box - not too bright at all.

In short, it works really well and is highly recommended. I suspect if you ignore all the really old comments then this product would have a higher rating than it does - it certainly deserves it!
