Scrubs - Season 9 [DVD]
Scrubs - Season 9 [DVD]
Dvd ~ Zach Braff

4.0 out of 5 stars The best in years, 29 Mar. 2011
This review is from: Scrubs - Season 9 [DVD] (DVD)
As all long-running sitcoms tend to, Scrubs fell into self-parody in its last few seasons, with hopeless overacting from Zach Braff, in particular, robbing it of much of its humour.

Season 9 was a breath of fresh air, with new and genuinely original characters who showed none of the weariness that the older cast were prone to in the later series. Maintaining some familiar faces - notably Cox, Kelso and Turk - ensured that there was enough continuity to prevent it from being a completely new show, and the likes of Drew and Cole meant that I never found myself wishing for more JD or Elliot.

The show certainly wasn't as good as in the first two or three seasons, when it was one of the best things on television thanks to a great ensemble cast, but it was better than it had been for a long time, and it's a shame it got killed off.

Friends Like Us: The Unofficial Guide to "Friends"

3.0 out of 5 stars A few surprises, 17 Feb. 2006
The authors of this book clearly know their Friends: if you're looking for facts, this isn't a bad place to turn, since although it doesn't go deep into meaningless trivia, it does clear up some confusions I had concerning Americanisms (what a Q-tip is, for example). However, the opinions of the authors are frequently suspect, never more so in their treatment of The One Where Noone's Ready, an episode from series 3 that is probably the best Friends episode ever created. They lambast the episode, clearly misunderstanding the whole purpose and direction of Friends comedy in its earliest (and, undoubtedly, greatest) series. This is not an isolated case, as many opinions, particularly with regards to the later series the book covers, will grate with anyone who truly appreciates Friends, and possibly ruin the credibility of the tome as a whole.

New Spring: A Wheel of Time Prequel
New Spring: A Wheel of Time Prequel

4.0 out of 5 stars Not just written for the money, 19 Sept. 2005
This book is only really worth reading if you've already a devout reader of the Wheel of Time, and have made it to at least book 3 or 4, and preferably much further. Many readers of the series will wonder if Jordan just wrote this for the money, but I truly believe that this wasn't the case: the book is written for a reason; to show us something more of Moiraine and Siuan's quest, and how it has affected their actions before and during the actual Wheel of Time series. Aes Sedai are, to me, rarely palatable, but the Accepted Moiraine and Siuan are far more sympathetic characters than any other I have come across in the White Tower, with less arrogance and a true, but unsickening, friendship. These are traits not frequently found in their characters in the original series, but believable nonetheless. Seeing into the minds of Moiraine and Lan is intriguing, as we don't often get to know their mindset in the other books. Well worth reading, and not just to tide you over until the next installment from The Creator.

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh, no no no no no, 23 Nov. 2004
This review is from: Moulin Rouge [2001] [DVD] (DVD)
You are far better off buying the soundtrack to this film than buying the film itself, because that's all it is: a collection of songs, tied together with a ludicrously shot piece of nonsense. Nicole Kidman is overrated as ever, the storyline is ridiculous, the direction even more so. Musicals should not be like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure art, 2 Sept. 2004
This review is from: Abbey Road (Audio CD)
In my opinion, this is the best Beatles album, and in fact the best album ever made: although Magical Mystery Tour is unrivalled as a collection of tracks, it doesn't have the qualities to be the best album, since there is a special feel to Abbey Road that runs throughout. The first half is good, with some excellent tracks - Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Something are stand-outs - but it is the second half, from about You Never Give Me Your Money onwards, that is truly superb. The tracks run into each other to give a medley effect, which works fantastically well: none of the songs on the second half could have been released as singles, they create something bigger than that. In short, Abbey Road is an example (perhaps the only example) of the LP as an art form. If you only get two Beatles albums, they should be 1 and Abbey Road, since the former gives you their hits and the latter gives you their finest musical hour. Well, forty-seven minutes and twenty-seven seconds.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quite disturbing at times, 29 Mar. 2004
If true, this is an exceedingly well-researched book. But don't read it if you still cherish Paul (or John, for that matter). It's best to pretend that much of what's in this book didn't happen. As a book, I have to say it's very good (although extrememly repetitive) but, as I said above, I wouldn't advise anyone read it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Matthew Perry..., 1 Dec. 2003
...plays Fred Roberts, a character who would be inconsequential to the plotline, had there been one. Basically, Jimmy needs to raise $110 in order to go to Hawaii - although it's not really clear why he wants to go - and he seems more interested in sleeping with several girls along the way. 'Matthew L. Perry' plays a small role as Jimmy's friend, appearing in quite a few scenes early on, but rarely featuring after the first half an hour or so. There are no funny moments in this film, least of all for Matt. It really hit home to me how bad this film is when Dad came in halfway through and asked me what the plot was: I couldn't tell him - because nothing really appeared to be happening. Surprisingly, the DVD case did not advertise greatly the fact that Perry is in it: it certainly doesn't have much else going for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Let's review the concept of stars, shall we..., 13 Oct. 2003
This review is from: The Beatles: 1 (Audio CD)
I quote: "On a scale of 1 to 5 stars, with 5 stars being the best," is how we are told to rate albums. However, I don't believe we should rate out of 5. We should rate out of 1 - '1' by the Beatles, that is. The measure of an album is how close it gets to being as good as this album, with 5 being as good, and 1 being nowhere near as good. This album, as it were, transcends stars.
In other words, I like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally! The answer to all my dreams!, 13 Oct. 2003
Most crossword fanatics might regard this book as a cheating mechanism. But most crossword fanatics aren't in High School, so I suppose I go against the trend. This book is absolutely fantastic when you need to find an anagram for a cryptic crossword and you can't puzzle it out. A wide range of words (including Proper nouns) that will solve all your dilemmas up to 12 letters long, this book is never long on the shelf. I recommend it to any crossword solver without strict morals against 'cheating.'

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I'd hoped, 13 Oct. 2003
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
In this, our victory year, the greatest year of my life (possibly...) I had to buy the season review video. Although it included every goal, the interviews seemed amateurish, and the narration wasn't brilliant. A must-have for Wolves fans, but it could have been quite a bit better.
