Palestrina: Song of Songs
Palestrina: Song of Songs
Offered by EliteDigital UK
Price: £10.95

5.0 out of 5 stars Palestrina doesn't get better than this, 23 Mar 2014
I'm neutral on John Rutter. But I love Palestrina.

As such this recording has that smooth transcendence that you experience when Palestrina is performed with inside out knowledge, not just of the details, which are glassy if uncomplemented by the broader sweep. And boy does this recording have a broader sweep. It carries you through the whole canon of these motets each related to the next. Wholly natural and yet precisely tuned, disciplined, individually expressive, and tied into the greater architecture as well as the written notes.

Palestrina doesn't get better than this.

5.0 out of 5 stars what a wonderful recording, 19 Mar 2014

I'm not in the camp of DRAMATIC Handel lovers - that is I find the subtleties to my preference, and for that this performance is wonderful. I previously, some years ago, owned The sixteen's recording of this work, which I found hooty and mannered.

I realise that for some more drama is required, but aside from that this is stylishly and unpretentiously performed by a good orchestra and acceptable soloists - so much that I was drawn more into the story and the music than I was with the Sixteen's version. From the opening of the overture, balanced and tuneful, to the final closing bars, it's all lovely top drawer Handel music performed sensitively.

There's something to be said for letting the notes speak for themselves, and this performance does this admirably. It is lacking the orchestral interludes but that is scant concern when the recording made me so happy.

Handel: Messiah
Handel: Messiah
Offered by Fulfillment Express
Price: £22.49

5.0 out of 5 stars a classic recording, 16 Jan 2014
This review is from: Handel: Messiah (Audio CD)
This is a ludicrously well played performance of the Messiah.

Solti demonstrates very adept and appropriate period sound awareness, whilst blending a large but balanced chorus that largely avoids wobbles. The arias are virtually perfect, accompaniment and soloists in balance. This is all about balance, with the impacts of the great choruses evenly attenuated to keep you engaged throughout the performance. in that regard this is a conductor's Messiah and none the worse for it.

Solti's habit of occasionally losing sight of the tune in his overall conception comes across occasionally but rarely enough to avoid damaging what has to be one of the truly great recorded performances of Messiah, in demo quality sound to boot. To die for.

Dvd ~ Liam Neeson
Price: £10.03

4.0 out of 5 stars good stuff, cameos from famous lookalikes, 13 Dec 2013
Liam Neeson is kidnapped by the Greek composer Vangelis, before finding a gun and shooting everyone. He then goes on to beat the Argentine footballer Maradona in hand to hand combat before finally vanquishing Vangelis and rescuing his wife. Good fun. It's not Citizen Kane but what action film is?

4.0 out of 5 stars World Prem recording of Concerto Doppio, plus the concerti grossi op.3, 7 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's a double concerto for Oboe and Bassoon by Handel. Allegedly.

It's a very nice one and very nicely played, the controversial authorship is one G.F. Handel (dug up in an archive in Russia).
It really does not sound like him, and could be another Italian-influenced composer such as Hasse or Telemann, it certainly has the odd vivaldian flourish (and very nice they are too) with some central european grandeur thrown in. It really isn't Handel to my ears though.

HOWEVER, it is very nice and it is played very well by this Italian period indtrument ensemble, and is coupled with a top rank recording of the Opus 3 concerti grossi in sunny italianate performances, with which it goes very well in a demo class recording.

So overall a very good buy for anyone who likes the great german baroque composers.

Organ Concertos
Organ Concertos

5.0 out of 5 stars great CD of baroque organ concertos to stand next to Handel, 5 Nov 2013
This review is from: Organ Concertos (Audio CD)
Very worthwhile, well played and well recorded.

Has some of Bach elder's severity, and is tuneful and lively. A wonderful prelude and fugue for solo organ by Bach the younger at the end. Excellent byway of the baroque to explore, these should be more widely known works, as with much of C.P.E. Bach's output.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant, warm, beguiling, 30 Oct 2013
you could not wish for better performances

the works are gems and should stand in the main repertoire

feinstein plays impeccably and the orchestra does too, musicianship and scholarship in balance

compelling stuff, listen to the whole disk in one sitting and you will be glad you did, having given Mozart's concertos a well earned break

5.0 out of 5 stars a fine fine Vivaldi concerti disk, 5 Aug 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Some of the finest Vivaldi playing this side of Milan. And certainly the sunniest Vivaldi playing you will ever hear.

Virtuosic but not demonstrative. Fantastic recording. Absolutely one of the best Vivaldi CDs released, deserves placing alongside your Rachael Podger, Carmignola, and Giardino Armonico CDs - easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Purcell, 10 April 2013

This is a superb Purcell choral CD with the highest production standards.

Nicely ornamented, very very well recorded, crisp clean and expressive.

could easily be from one of the major indie labels like hyperion or Chandos, up there with the best, certainly the equal of Preston's classic accounts on Archiv.

5.0 out of 5 stars crisp, 10 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Expressive without being egotistical
Conscientious without being dogmatic
Virtuosic without being overly demonstrative
Rhythmic without being tiring
Sensitive without being mushy
Pianistic and yet Authentic

This surely has to rank as first among equals of the available best recordings of the Goldberg Variations. Jando combines deep ability with a disarming humility that, in the right works, gets to the heart of the music; I listened to this cd in one sitting.
