The Betrayal
The Betrayal
by Helen Dunmore
Edition: Paperback
Price: £8.99

4.0 out of 5 stars a great follow up but enjoyable in its own right too, 22 July 2011
This review is from: The Betrayal (Paperback)
This story takes you to post war St Petersburgh where Stalinist principles have replaced starvation and extreme hardships described in her previous novel. Affecting - deeply moral principles come up for examination. How would you cope with those kind of dilemmas?

3.0 out of 5 stars Sicilan charm but a tad overrated?, 2 Jan. 2011
This review is from: The Leopard (Paperback)
This novel moves slowly and in a place few know well - Sicily. It does have charm of an ancient baroque kind which unravels in the heat of Sicilian summers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Touching Irish tale, 29 Oct. 2010
This review is from: Brooklyn (Paperback)
ColmToibin was a new author for me but a great find. Brooklyn is a tale told with deceptive simplicity. Parting and loss, coming of age and exploration of close relationships are themes in this delightful story. Do read it.

A splendid book full of close observation of the countryside and its seasons. I read it weekly to reflect on my own experiences. Gentle but opinionated in the best way.

4.0 out of 5 stars History of Temptation, 13 July 2009
For anyone who though that sweets were a thing of the past and a bit childish this book will fill you in the fascinating history of sweets. How little things have changed! How old do you think hundreds and thousands are or the kit-kat or sherbet? Lots of good facts that everyone will like.
