Blood Cells: A Practical Guide
Blood Cells: A Practical Guide
by Barbara J. Bain
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £94.95

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential standard text for the medic blood scientist, 17 July 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
Blood Cells is now here in its fifth edition. First published in 1989, this latest edition (2015) is fully updated, in full colour.

It is written for practising haematologists and trainees in mind, with the purpose being to educate on diagnostic tools, covering all aspects of laboratory methods. It is both a reference work as well as a bench manual.

The book covers
1. Blood sampling and blood film preparation and examination
2. Performing a blood count
3. Morphology of blood cells
4. Detecting erroneous blood counts
5. Normal ranges
6. Quantitative changes in blood cells
7. Important supplemenary blood tests
8. Disorders of red cells and platelets
9. Disorders of white cells
(These are the nine chapters of the book).

Naturally, the referencing is superb, allowing one to explore further where needed.

There is a very useful companion website, which includes Multiple Choice Questions and Extended Matching Questions.

Whilst running to Al last 500 pages, it is a surprisingly thin volume, because of the -- though excellent -- thin paper used. Very nice.

My sister, who is a trained and practising haematologist, swears by this text. She uses it every day.

For me, as a scientist with a passing interest in learning new things, I have been grateful for the opportunity to view and read such a text so as to learn about something I knew little.

Philips HX9044/26 Sonicare Adaptive Clean Brush Heads x 4

5.0 out of 5 stars Another fine addition to the Sonicare range, 16 July 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I never fail to be impressed by Philips Sonicare toothbrushes. With the small but rapid vibrations I really believe that these products make for much cleaner teeth compared with either manual or the 'other' electric toothbrush on the market.

Of course, invest in a good base unit and these will reward you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value, and excellent light bulbs, 13 July 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I am very happy with these. I use them in my kitchen fitting which houses four of these. They provide excellent light, and are of the small screw fitting variety.

A good quality bulb, and you get 5 in the packet. Should last me quite a while.

Excellent product, seemingly of very good build quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely warm light, 12 July 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
These have a nice 'traditional' light, as opposed to the fluorescent-type bulbs' light which is much colder. And there are plenty in the packet.

They have the small screw type of fitting.

All in all, a nice light bulb to have going over night, as they have a good low power. Perfect.

Philips S5130/06 Series 5000 Electric Shaver with Smart Click Precision Trimmer
Philips S5130/06 Series 5000 Electric Shaver with Smart Click Precision Trimmer
Price: £70.00

4.0 out of 5 stars Good shaver, but a shame no travel bag, 9 July 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
This is not a product for trimming a beard. It is a standard shaver with an attachment for straightening sideburns and the like.

In this respect it is fantastic. The shave feels really very close, and the attachment for straightening sideburns is very good and precise.

The fact that the shaver head is washable under the tap is an added bonus, and one that is becoming more common with similar shaving products.

A star is lost because of the lack of a travel bag. I really think this is quite poor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Effective, beautiful skin cream, 9 July 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A good moisturiser will make sure the skin and body does some of the work for you, rather than just hydrating the skin, and this is what this cream does. It makes the body produce elastin and collagen at the place where it is applied, so causing some anti-ageing effects. Aged skin lacks these, and so as less elasticity and suppleness.

I have found that this cream causes a very good tightening to skin, evening out creases/lines and producing an overall better look. It is surely salon-quality.

A small squirt of the stuff goes along way, and it absorbs beautifully into the skin, and is completely non-greasy.

This is a quality moisturiser. Containing Bee Venom, it is important that you are not allergic to this or bees in general. A skin patch test would let you know if uncertain.

Oxford French-English Visual Dictionary of Animals (Oxford Visual Dictionary)
Oxford French-English Visual Dictionary of Animals (Oxford Visual Dictionary)
Price: £10.99

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable learning experience, 3 July 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
A delight.

I gave this to me partner's niece, as she loves animals and is learning French; she is 4. Perhaps a bit advanced for 4, but the pictures are terrific, and she can use this to learn both languages.

There's a section about pronunciation, and that works well.

The pictures are very good, with animals grouped together, and French is the first language of the book, so ideal for learning French.

Really enjoyable.

Russell Hobbs 20930 3-in-1 Sandwich/ Panini and Waffle Maker
Russell Hobbs 20930 3-in-1 Sandwich/ Panini and Waffle Maker
Price: £26.49

3.0 out of 5 stars A mid-range one -- not excellent but not rubbish, 3 July 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I'm really enjoying using this. In the past I have made toasted sandwiches the hard way (butter outside of bread, filling between, use a pan, and press hard with utensils).

This obviously removes the last couple of stages, and those are the tricky ones.

Perhaps there are others out there where the plates are deeper; it strikes me that these ones are not that deep.

Removable plates are on the one had a good idea, and this makes the thing multi-function, but it means that things are not sealed properly, and the danger is that oil and such things leak onto the elements, which is potentially dangerous, as mentioned elsewhere. It hasn't happened to me yet, but then I don't use much cheese.

Scrabble Light with 60 re-usable stickers
Scrabble Light with 60 re-usable stickers
Offered by Design 55 online
Price: £17.50

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of fun, that's all., 21 Jun. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
I use this to display words at parties, just a bit of fun, really.

There is no function for this other than just to have a bit of fun with words.

I was disappointed that there is only one letter C.

I have also used the letters to stick on windows, which is quite fun.

The link to Scrabble is pretty tenuous.

Philips BT5262/13 Beard Trimmer Series 5000
Philips BT5262/13 Beard Trimmer Series 5000
Price: £56.05

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent trimmer for beards and good detailing., 17 Jun. 2015
Customer review from the Amazon Vine Programme (What's this?)
As with all Philips trimmers and similar products, this is also an excellent model, with the build quality superb.

Having the rotating head, one for general grooming, the other for finer detail, is much better that having to have heads that you replace, and that is what puts these ahead of rivals' products.

And that it is washable under the tap is terrific! Makes like very easy.

As a travel item I would use this over others because everything is contained.

It's weighty and sturdy. Am excellent trimmer.
