This book was recommended by a friend who has written extensively on WW poetry, and as I am not an avid fan of ‘biographies’ I was a little apprehensive at first, but after the first chapter I was completely captivated. This is not your standard biography - relaying information directly from page to reader –its multi-layered discourse guides the reader to build their own fascinating images, combining literary texts and biographical history in an informative yet also surprisingly compassionate way. Later found out this book was also reviewed by Rowan Williams in the New Statesman, great way to commemorate WWI anniversary, came on here to buy another copy for my dad – an interesting and often emotive read.
