North Korea (Bradt Travel Guides)
North Korea (Bradt Travel Guides)
by Robert Willoughby
Edition: Paperback
Price: 14.99

5.0 out of 5 stars The one and only., 30 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The only travel guide exclusively on North Korea at the moment. LP and others include the North as an appended section in books on Korea, on which the focus is predominantly the South. This is detailed, long on words and short on pictures; and in conjunction with other relevant reading on North Korea can give one a good grounding before departure. Bear in mind this is in the process of a third edition and although not much may have changed, you may want to wait until that is due out in August.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovers of "lieder" and swingers of songs - buy it., 13 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A wide range - noy just some of the classical tradition, but the American and British songwriting traditions too - are here beautifully rendered with warmth and obvious affection for the material. I bought one for myself and another as a Christmas present for a friend who I think might appreciate the songs and the quality with which they are sung.

The Killer Volume 4: Unfair Competition (Killer (Archaia))
The Killer Volume 4: Unfair Competition (Killer (Archaia))
by Matz
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars A long time coming, but in translation at last., 23 Sep 2013

A fabulous continuation to "The killer" series. Subtly different presentation of the speech by comparison with previous volumes. You must have familiarity with volumes 2 & 3 to make sense of this one, as the characters continue to develop and the plot thickens around Cuba and oil interests. The gorgeous artwork repeats its presence here, characterised by wonderful shadow work and lush detail. One of the best graphic novel series going.

5.0 out of 5 stars What's not to like?, 15 July 2013

Nanci can be a little nasal on occasion and one of these songs has questionable ethics, but the remainder of the album is on a par with "Last of the true believers". Excellent music and lyrics and, although short, the album is worth adding to your collection. Recommended.

Sophie Calle - the Address Book
Sophie Calle - the Address Book

Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent content - beware the binding., 1 Jun 2013

You will know already whether you love or hate the conceits of Sophie Calle. Is this an exercise in Art or stalking? Either way, beware of the occasional shoddy presentation of this one - the red cover can sometimes be misaligned with the black and on one copy the rear few pages were uncut. After a return, my copy is fine. As to the exercise itself? I am sure Ms Calle would be somewhat maddening an individual, but the idea behind this is intriguing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sound., 23 April 2013
There are many translations of the Qur'an. Due to the nature of Arabic, none will ever convey anything other than shades of meaning. They can only approach. That said, and bearing in mind the almost "Authorised" nature of translations such as Pickthall and Ali; this is a good working text. The appendices are especially useful, fleshing out useful exegesis, albeit with a somewhat missionary bent. The fact that the translation originates with a female revert to Islam and is published here in the UK should encourage a wide readership. As to my credentials I am not a Muslim, but a teacher of comparative religions. Debates over translations always go back on forth - like any Englishman I may love the language of the KJV Bible, but it is a poor working text for academic use. This "Qur'an" may lack the grandeur and sweep of Pickthall, but it is open and lucid.

This review is from: Girl Who Got Away (Audio CD)
Those of us who have followed Dido since "White flag" and have in that respect, "kept the faith" surely won't be disappointed by this album. The naysayers will not be persuaded and there is nothing new here to shift their opinion. But as ever, the real meat lies in the lyrical content. This is far from the "beige" of modern music; rather Dido is introspective, cautious and mature. She is a poet and a songstress and this comes through yet again on the fourth album release. I get the impression that this young woman cares about her work and as a result, releases new material only after she is convinced of its worth. Well done again. Now it'll be all quiet on the Dido front for another five years, no doubt! Glacially slow to release, each album has proved nourishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent new format., 18 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have used LP guides a great deal. Now under new ownership, this series still appear to espouse the principles of their founders. Once one is used to the new format, the guides are as useful as ever. They fit into an overcoat pocket, are spine stitched still and now contain a fold-out city map. I didn't use this only because the hotel at which I was staying provided me with one. This was a first-time visit for me to Berlin and the guide was excellent in giving me a sense of the city, district by district.

Roy ven den Brink-Budgen could lay claim to being one of the foremost exponents and proponents of critical thinking as a discrete subject. I implement many of his methods at GCSE and above - exceleent for our Philosophy and RS sttudents. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beware - good text but digital printed on demand., 17 Jan 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Excellent book for yielding a greater understanding of issues surrounding those who work in this night-time economy. Be advised though that the text is now a printed-on-demand product and it looks like it! Cheaply put together and inadequately bound (no spine stitching) one is actually paying far too high a price for this paperback. Buy a s/h copy in hardback elsewhere if you can find it.
