3.0 out of 5 stars Not an autobiography !, 24 May 2015
Informative analysis (by an obvious fan) of Larry Davis's stories of Seinfeld & (episode by episode) Curb your Enthusiasm. Interesting thoughts on where the scripts come from in David's odd approach to life. Probably one for the devotees as opposed to casual reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars sets the pattern for modern road tales, 31 Mar. 2015

Though Kerouac is credited with breaking the mould of American novels, in the light of hindsight, the book is nowhere near as groundbreaking as I remembered from the hype at the time. Neither is the literature particularly innovative, but it is worth a re-read to put into perspective the "road movie" ethos of the age & to reevaluate the myth of Kerouac.

3.0 out of 5 stars archetypal chase tale, 8 Mar. 2015

Classic tale of Nazi scullduggery & good-old British pluck. Buchan keeps the action flowing, which is probably why Hitchcock took it on as a film script

Wonderful tale of growing up in small town USA, moral & sensitive writing conveys lots of childhood fears & foolishness

4.0 out of 5 stars too much Sinbad, 5 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Delightful tales from Persia, but a bit too much so Sinbad's travels - they all involve shipwrecks on remote desert islands & once is enough for anyone

4.0 out of 5 stars French Revolution Classic, 22 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Wonderful tale of living within the French Revolution, with Dickens keen eye for human traits and added humour. Like all Dickens books its wordy descriptions using the vernacular of the times is harder going than modern prose, but it sets his scenes accurately

4.0 out of 5 stars eyewitness Martians, 27 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Terrific re-read of a classic after a long, long time. Wells' eyewitness account is a real page turner & his knowledge of the sciences shows through often. The areas of "invasion" he describes are now familiar to me & can imagine his feelings for the areas, the people involved in his fiction

4.0 out of 5 stars Tracy island preview, 12 Dec. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Interesting fictional tale of the impact of WW2 occupation in French Catalonia. Good portrayals of the friends, families & situations the locals had to face up to after their liberation & their ongoing reluctance to accept their parts in it. Interesting for me, because though the setting of the tale is a fictional fishing village, the other locations are all familiar to us near our "Tracy Island" gaff - Collioure, Port Vendre, Perpignan, Thuir, Ceret, Amalie-les-Bains etc & the narrative captures the essence of the place & it's people

Good tale of various Nigerians aspiring to (& occasionally rejecting) the American Dream. Some lovely insights into the inter-tribal & inter-African beliefs & viewpoints. A good Holiday read
