Sunbolt (The Sunbolt Chronicles Book 1)
Sunbolt (The Sunbolt Chronicles Book 1)
Price: £1.19

5.0 out of 5 stars Fab story and characters - love it!, 15 July 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Started with Bone Knife, her free short story, and am now hooked on this author's lovely prose, strong, real characters and original storytelling! I keep checking to see if any more have come out (other than Thorn), but not yet 😞
Really refreshing reading about female characters who are neither so lacking in spine that they are doormats nor improbably tough and amazing at everything. Her characters are real and engaging. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshingly real characters!, 15 July 2015

I'd quite happily have paid for this, so getting it free was a real bonus. It's beautifully written, with real, engaging characters. It's refreshing to have a female lead character that isn't perfect, tough and awe inspiring, or a complete wuss waiting for a man to rescue her. Rae is a real person, with her own problems to overcome, and a nice stubborn streak to boot. I keep checking to see if the rest of the series has started yet - this was a very tasty appetiser!
Would strongly recommend going to read Thorn and Sunbolt after this :)

Great boots, my son loves them and they keep his feet dry and warm. No problems with the sizing, they're just right. Would get them again

4.0 out of 5 stars Very cute, but has a rattle, 11 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this because my son was given the Dario Dino comforter and loves it. At 5.5 months, it is perfect for him to pick up, chew, and fall asleep with. I bought this one, as it has the same overall pattern - with a head at one corner, rather than the middle, as is more common. When it arrived, it turns out that this one has a rattle inside its head, unlike the dino one. As I want this as a bedtime quiet toy, this is a bit unfortunate. Otherwise, it is very cute - nice face, lovely soft underside and fur, colourful ribbons.
Just a bit unhappy that the rattle detail appears NOWHERE in the discription

3.0 out of 5 stars It was ok, 12 Nov. 2013

It was ok, nothing to write home about, but readable. I probably would have been a little bit irritated if I'd actually paid anything for it. Reasonable story, readable prose, characters so-so

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as engaging as the first one!, 12 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am really enjoying this series - the first one was a joy to read, and the second one followed suit! The main character is lively, fun and intelligent, the story bounces along and there are no major plot holes. Unlike many of the current crop of fantasy with vampires and werewolves, the plot is not hijacked by idiotic romance, and the female character does not swoon and check her brain at the door when confronted by a handsome man. My only regret is that it will be so long before I get to read the next one. Buy this one, and if you haven't read her other series (Soulless etc) then I strongly advise you to go get them too!

3.0 out of 5 stars A little uneven, 12 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I bought this as I had read Havenstar, another book by Glenda Larke, though under a different name. I really enjoyed that book - this one rather less. It was an interesting idea, but just seemed a little uneven in areas. The characters and story wandered about a good bit, and there were some clunky plot devices. The characters themselves were sometimes quite alive, and other times, just seemed to be carrying the plot and so not acting as you would expect. I will probably still buy the next one when it comes out, as I'd like to see what happens (though it will depend on the price - I wouldn't spend over £4)

3.0 out of 5 stars Not up to his usual standard, 12 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I've read most of Charles de Lint's books, and this is the first time I've been disappointed - this is really not up to his usual standard. I read a preface by him once, where he said he didn't write books for kids or young adults specifically, he just wrote books. Unfortunately, this book definitely reads as though it were written for a young adult audience, and suffers for it. It is almost as though he has gone through a check list of points he should hit to engage the require audience. It feels a little formulaic as a result. It is a real pity, as if he had just written the way he usually does, with strong characters, excellent story and subtle fantasy/reality interweaving, it would have been a much better book.

2.0 out of 5 stars not really worth it, 10 Nov. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The first and last stories (Tanya Huff and Caitlin Kitteridge) were good, but the rest were a waste of e-ink. Tanya Huff is one of my favourite authors and is the reason I bought this book. Her story was good, though she has done better, but isn't really a standalone story - you would need to know
the characters to really appreciate it. I've never read anything by Caitlin Kitteridge before, but would try another based on this one. As for the other authors, I'd avoid them in future. I regret buying this book - £4.49 was too much for two okay stories

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging, if odd, 28 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was good tho not brilliant - story was good, no obvious plot holes. Characters were well drawn, though not necessarily that nice! I went on to buy the next one, which is recommendation in itself. He does have a very distinct style and I can imagine him being a little marmite-ish
