2.0 out of 5 stars Weak characters and incongruous relationships, 13 July 2014

The main friendship is supposed to be extremely strong, yet the friend is absent for most of Rachel's time of need. The main male characters are implausibly good and bad respectively. The plot is this book's sole saving grace. Skim it or skip it.

Strong characters share the narrative in this sensitive, insightful story of how a boy's birth defect effects not only his family but all those at the school he joins. It is a wonderful read.

If you're looking for insight into the life of a paramedic this is worth a read. The stories are interesting, but the narrative lacks a natural flow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly British, 15 Jun 2014

One of the funniest books I have ever read, Free Country follows George and Ben from Lands End to John O Groats an adventure over which they are not allowed to spend any money. George is an honest, funny, self-deprecating narrator and the people they meet along the way are wonderful examples if the colorful characters of Great Britian. Well worth a read, hop on and enjoy the ride!

I found it hard to accept the strength of emotion much less the selective memory blocking that supposedly holds over eighteen years, and there is too much rehashing of the angst of the protagonist, but overall the plot is good. It's like a vastly diluted Norah Roberts. Worth a read if you need a brief distraction...

4.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable insight, warmly told., 25 May 2014

Just as enjoyable as the first book, Ben's humility and candor bring warmth to each interlude he describes. Told in brief chapters it rather feels like a series of the 10 minute slots he sees every day. Anyone considering becoming a GP should definitely read this, but the glamour-stripped insight is valuable to non-medics alike, especially if you use any NHS services. I like that he champions the NHS without being defensive or blindsided to its failings. But then that's what you'd expect once you get to know his "common sense" outlook. Buy it, read it, then be polite and succinct in your next GP appointment!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great story, humbly told, 16 May 2014

Perhaps not the best flow or grammar at all times, but wonderful insight into an amazing life. Tony also doesn't patronize the reader in his medical detail. Definitely worth reading!
