5.0 out of 5 stars Right weight, 7 Mar 2014

This mattock is more solid than many flimsy versions by others and the vertical blade at the opposite end is useful for cutting the sides of any turf when digging a ditch. It is well balanced and @ 2.27Kg just about the right weight to cut through turf/grass without being too heavy. Works well with the wooden handle http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0001IWII8/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_1

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast and easy-to-operate, 17 Jan 2014

As the description suggests, these are fast and easy-to-operate and do provide the promised 'third hand'. I have used them up to a reasonable pressure, but tend to opt for a traditional G-clamp when I want to achieve the maximum level of compression. These look as if they could exert more pressure than I have risked, however, it is their convenience and speed that usually causes me to use them. Unlike cheaper bar clamps I have used in the past, these work well and appear to be much more durable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Useful, 17 Jan 2014

When one wants to take the torch with one, but not use it for a bit, then this is a really useful accessory as it is more secure than having it in a pocket, but is ready for immediate use when necessary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Value for Money, 17 Jan 2014

Clearly these are not expensive specialist saws, however, as general tools to have to hand they do jobs well and I have to say that the junior hacksaw is much better than others I have in the tool box.

A useful collection of saws that will allow you to deal with most DIY jobs

2014 Diplomat Pocket Diary Refill/Insert - Week with Notes - Portrait
2014 Diplomat Pocket Diary Refill/Insert - Week with Notes - Portrait

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted!, 17 Jan 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Works perfectly as a replacement for the inserts for Coutts & Co diaries (to answer some queries) and Gilt Edged seem a good company to do business with — they sent a replacement for the original which Royal Mail took five weeks to deliver.

It is convenient to me to have the entire week on the left-hand page with the right being used for notes about what is on the left.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good in the darkest of conditions, 17 Jan 2014

Works well as one might reasonably expect from a Maglite. Used with rechargeable D cells, which are easy to get on-line, this lasts well over several weeks of dog-walking. The two main beam patterns fulfil most needs that I can imagine and here in the pitch black of the countryside its reach is many hundreds of metres.

Some think that it is a heavy torch (which it is), but not unduly so and this is the nature of a good torch that has a bright and long-throw beam pattern. The belt accessory is a useful addition when the torch is being carried but not in use.

A satisfied customer.

Financial Times Guide to Inheritance Tax, Probate and Estate Planning (The FT Guides)
Financial Times Guide to Inheritance Tax, Probate and Estate Planning (The FT Guides)

5.0 out of 5 stars Works for all three UK legislatures, 31 Oct 2013

If you are faced with the prospect of undertaking the task of settling the estate of someone who has died in an attempt to save a small fortune, then this book was the best of the four I used and replaced my old copy of the 'Which?' guide (the new Which? publication might be more user friendly, but is less good than this book).

When dealing with probate, it does more than mention that things are different in Scotland and it is called confirmation, it deals with the differences and cites the appropriate forms, I presume it is as accurate when dealing with the differences in Northern Ireland.

Once you have ploughed through the tasks of Probate and Inheritance tax, the mind naturally turns to the state of one's own finances post one's own mortality and the final part which deals with estate planning aims at getting one to strike whilst in the mood.

A really helpful addition to one's library.

Islands: A trip through time and space
Islands: A trip through time and space
by Peter Conrad
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 14.95

5.0 out of 5 stars stimulating and infuriating, 31 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As someone who lives on a northern archipelago I found this a fascinating read (as did a local knight of the realm who also acquired a copy). Conrad's clear text is both stimulating and infuriating in near equal measure, but he really understands the influence island life, whether real or imaginary, has on the imagination.

Anyone who likes the concept of living in a remote environment will enjoy Conrad's underlying thesis. The brief mentions of Ingmar Bergman, for example, said more about interpreting films like 'The hour of the wolf' than many chapters in other books.

It is infuriating how this pro piece of software changes the location of its menu items and procedures between versions, particularly if, like me, you do not update to every new release. That having been said, I might yet discover how to achieve a few of the things I did with great ease in earlier versions of this package, but there are a wealth of new features that all seem to work well on a Mac platform (tried it on OS 10.6 and 10.8).

The Language of Architecture
The Language of Architecture

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, 31 Oct 2013

Very much a book of its time when architecture was still thought of as exciting by most of the population, but it still contains a wealth of stimulating thoughts on the built environment.
