4.0 out of 5 stars A GOOD DOCUMENTARY FOR THE NON-CATHOLICS TO UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS AND THE DYNAMICS OF SAINTHOOD, 6 Sept. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Passion Of The Saints [DVD] (DVD)
A review of the history of the Saints from the Catholic point of view, this DVD is only a Primer, not the detailed account of the lives and deeds of the saints, but rather a explanation of what kind of person the Catholic Church considers a Saint and the pre-requisitions for Sainthood. From Stephen, the first Martir of Christianity to the recently (in Pope John Paul II era) santified priest of Poland that saved the life of a man in Auschwitz the documentary debates the merits and demerits of the process of santification since the beginning of Christianity. Of course they talk about the more popular saints like Saint Thereza of Avila, Saint Francis of Assis and other less known for the non-catholic public. The most interesting aspect of the documentary is the extremely detailed explanation of how the process of santification now is considered in Vatican. And also the aspects of the Miracles and the Apparitions of Virgin Mary are very well covered. But it is only a documentary and many aspects must be explored deeper in books of History of the Christian Religion or books about the biography of a specific saint. But it is a very interesting documentary and I reccomend it for the non-Catholics to understand what is considered sainthood and how the saints interact in the complex universe of the Catholic faith. They are not partisans nor critics, they only present the facts and legends, and the watcher takes his or her own conclusions. I am from a predominantly catholic country (Brazil) so for me this connections with saints is not strange for me, even not being a Catholic, because the cultural ambiance in Brazil is very impregnated with these concepts. For persons that live in countries that are Protestant or for persons of other faiths like Jewish or Muslim persons it helps to understand what is the concept of sainthood in the Catholic Church.

5.0 out of 5 stars DEADLY SINS : ARE THEY OLD FASHIONED CONCEPTS OR ARE THEY STILL RELEVANT SPIRITUALLY?, 17 Aug. 2014

This review is from: Seven Deadly Sins [DVD] (DVD)
Very good series of History Channel. It has no subtitles but even for me whose maternal language is not english it was very easily understood. Very interesting points of view about sin and very colorful images of the idea of the Seven deadly sins from Evagrio, Pope Gregory the Great and Dante's Inferno. Very good. I recommend for the students of History of the Religion and also for the layperson that wants to know more about the concepts of sin. It is very interesting what they say about how today some sins that worried our ancestors very much are now stimulated and even considered not sinful ( the episodes of Lust and Greed and of Sloth shows more modern points of view of these sins). It is worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE KING WITH THE HEART OF A LION AND THE WISE WARRIOR SULTAN, 17 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Every one knows the story of Richard the Lionheart the King of England that went to the Crusade to liberate Jerusalem and failed to do so. But not everyone knows the full story of the third Crusade. This FANTASTIC documentary movie shows both sides of the most famous Crusade of all after the first one, the third Crusade, that put Richard the Lionheart against the wise and extremely experienced warrior sultan Saladin. Both are presented without mythic connotations and the presentations of English and Muslim historians of this period help to paint a more accurate portrait of these two very interesting historic personnas. I loved the actors that they chose to play each role. And the historical documentation is very accurate, as far as I could research in other sources. This documentary does not take sides, it is not the brave Lionheart King against the evil Sarracens, no, it is a very detailed and meticulous researched documentation of each warrior's good and bad qualities as leaders and as persons. One particular moment was very moving: Richard the Lionheart was going in the direction of Jerusalem to conquer the city and everybody inside Jerusalem panicked. Saladin, with few men in Jerusalem, was taken by surprise and knew that he could not defeat alone the English king , so he and the whole city spend the night before the supposed attack praying to God that the English king could be merciful and not slay everybody as the europeans did when they conquered Jerusalem in the First Crusade. Miraculously the prayers of Saladin and of the people inside the walls of Jerusalem are answered. Without explanation, Richard gives up his intention to invade and marches south, leaving the siege. He does not enter Jerusalem, even when invited under a flag of truce by Saladin, because he did not liberate it. And there is more spice in the documentary: Richard befriends the brother of Saladin and proposes a marriage alliance between the Muslim and his sister ( an English princess) to make them King and Queen of Jerusalem. (Of course the bride refused! Saladin's brother was tempted but when he discovered that to do so he had to renounce his other wives he also refused!) These bits of historic information, wheter funny as the above or very serious (as the beheading of the Muslim prisoners by Richard and the sad end of Saladin because of a wasting disease) are very informative and makes this documentary one that everybody that wants to know about the Crusades must watch. This DVD is from region 1, you must have an ALL region DVD player to watch it . It does not have subtitles, but it has closed-captions in english, so if your TV has closed-captions capabilities you can follow the dialogs even if your have hearing problems, but even with these limitations it is worth every penny. All PBS HOME VIDEO documentaries from USA are great, so check also the others. I am buying all of them. And this one is worth having. You will love this one it if you are a fan of Middle Ages, Crusades , Richard the Lionheart and Saladin, as I am!

5.0 out of 5 stars ABOUT THE BEAUTIFUL PACKAGE OF THE BOXSET, 17 Aug. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Everyone has published many good critics about the show so I will not write about it again, but I will speak about the package. It is a very cute package, with slim discs all inside a box that resembles a cigar-box (a special feature of Columbo was that he was always smoking cigars!), This box fitted perfectly in my shelf and it is very easy to open and to find the DVD you want to watch. Not the cumbersome boxes that sometimes they release but a very beautiful box with all the seasons (I am still watching it and because I only watched a few episodes when a child, I do not know if it is complete). But it is worth the price. And if you want to give it as a present, do it. The person will love it!(especially your father that probably loved Columbo in the 70's!)

i LOVED IT! It may not have any subtitles in any language but the soundtrack in english is very good and very easily understood even for persons whose maternal language is not english. The case is very practical and with slim cases DVDs and all the 5 seasons of this TV series. I had always wanted to have it and I was not disappointed. I acquired it in a TODAY'S deal promotion and it was even more gratifying! Keep watching the deals, some weeks the promotions are so good you cannot resist!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Retification about the product's information, 28 July 2014
This excelent DVD produced in German is announced as having soundtrack in English and German and no subtitles but the only review in UK gave it a poor rate because the person that wrote it was unable to acess the english soundtrack. When I read it I went to the German Amazon and read the reviews posted there about the product. They wrote glowing and very detailed reviews about this TV miniseries and they informed that it was indeed dubbed in English. I bought it in the french Amazon ( at that time it was not available from the UK store) and now I will try to explain how to acess the menu with the english language. As soon as you put the DVD in your DVD player it will appear a menu in german written Katharina die Grosse Teil 1 and Teil 2 : that means : Katharina the Great part 1 and part 2 because each part has 90 minutes and the minisseries has a total of 180 minutes. So you choose for example Teil 1 ( part 1) and then along with the picture of the actress it will appear the title of the film: Katharina die Grosse, der Kampf um die Krone Teil 1. ( loosely translated as Katharina the Great the fight for the Throne). Below there are three lines in capital letters and the last in small letters . Choose the second one that say Sprachen (Languages) and click. It will open another menu that says Deutsch DD 2.0 and right below Englisch DD 2,0. Choose the second line (Englisch=English). Then the menu will switch to a phrase in german: Film starten that means : begin the film. Click there and forget the other words that says Hauptmenu( principal menu where you will return to the anterior page). In Film starten then the film will begin spoken in english (of course after the names of the actors). Ms Zeta Jones and Mr McGann are english so their voices appear without dubbing. Ms Moreau as french was dubbed in english by another actress! The voices are very clear and easily understood, but there is no subtitles in any languages. I hope that my experience with this Dvd may help someone that wants to buy this DVD but was in doubt about the spoken languages. After all I am Brazilian, neither english nor german are my native languages and I understood the film perfectly well! Good luck and do not buy the american version because that american version was edicted and some scenes are missing, and the DVD is region 1.

5.0 out of 5 stars A COMPREHENSIVE BIOGRAPHY OF HENRY VIII, 5 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I read many books about Henry the eight and his wives, but never watched any documentary about him. This documentary from Dr. Starkey was very comprehensive and, at the same time, very easily understood. The author of the documentary travels all over England and shows the castles and mansions of Henry VIII, the portraits and clothes of his court, and mini-dramatizations about key-events in his life. Very good biography. A plus: it has subtitles in english, for me a great bonus because as a Brazilian I sometimes do not understand spoken english. I bought it together with the series Monarchy , Elizabeth and the six wives of Henry VIII, so, for me it was a week-end immersed in the histgory of the English Royal Monarchy. I recommend all of them (all of them has subtitles in english!)

5.0 out of 5 stars SHAKESPEARE AND THE PRELUDE OF THE WAR OF THE ROSES REVISITED, 5 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am Brasilian so I grew up watching only the most popular Shakesperean plays. Only Henry V ( the movie with Kenneth Branagh) I knew a little. It was very good for me to watch these historical plays that comprises the group of Shakesperian plays that covers the history of the War of the Roses. I liked it very much and Jeremy Irons was superb as Henry IV. Tom Middleton as Henry V in the play of Henry IV was little more than a playboy and he played the part very well. As Henry the V his part grew and so his gravitas as a King. I loved his scene with Catherine of Valois, very playful and spoken in French (the original play asks it of the actors). RIchard II I did not knew at all but loved how the actor played the misguided King. The figurines were superb and the castles and rooms looked as I think they should have looked in the 15th century. And as a plus: Subtitles. For a non-english, subtitles for Shakespeare are a necessity. I think that even persons that are born in England these days do not understand the 16th century language of Shakespeare so subtitles are very good to study the language and to not lose itself in the melée of the dialogues. Very aptly titled: THE HOLLOW CROWN, after the monologue in the first play (Richard II), it describes the fight of men that are cousins and desire above anything to be king (to put the crown of England in his head). But this crown is HOLLOW, so I understand, the Power that it confers is transitory and very bitter. Very wise and very sad because as the war of roses continued, we see these powerful cousins destroying each other to end with a wasted land and many years of civil wars. Beautiful played Shakespeare. ( I ask forgiveness if I mispelled the name of some actor in this review, because my english is not very good, please check the review of Amazon for the names of the actors)

5.0 out of 5 stars A HISTORY OF BRITAIN FOR THE NON-NATIVES, 5 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am Brazilian, so I knew very little about the History of Britain, except the obvious (Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, something about Queen Victoria). Loved the series because it is so complete and at the same time so easily understood. The scenery was beautiful and the narrator, Simon Schama, whose book Citizens I have already read, was easily understood and made himself very acessible to the lay person that knows almost nothing about his country. A very important thing for me , because I am a foreigner and do not understand very well spoken english: it has subtitles and it helped very much with the narrative. I watched the documentaries (15 episodes) almost one after another because I was hooked by the excelent narrative. A thing to ask Mr. Schama: talk a little more about World War I and II because these episodes for me were too short, but the rest was excellent. Recommended to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC COMEDY WITH BRITISH FLAVOUR, 5 Aug. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I am Brazilian and here in Brazil Black Adder appeared infrequently in cable TV, a few episodes, especially those of the First World War. Now the lavish remasterization with good colors, sound and especially the sorely-needed subtitles made my memories of Black Adder sweeter . Sweeter because Black Adder is the kind of comedy that relies more in the TEXT and the subtleties of the actors in delivering their lines than in the physical comedy that nowadays abounds in Hollywood. To understand some of the lines you must have a good knowledge of british culture and history and pay much attention because the pun is delivered almost without anyone understanding (Rowan Atkinson is brilliant at it). So, subtitles help because you don't lose the joke. And it was for me a surprise watching a very young Hugh Laurie making comedy and also Stephen Fry (always an excelent actor). Miranda RIchardson was also a pleasant surprise, especially as the Queen and the actor that plays Baldrick is also very good. To the ones that do not know Black Adder it will be a pleasant surprise. To the fans, a collection with good memorabilia (interviews with the actors), so on. The product came in 6 DVDs in a compact case easy to manipulate and to keep in the shelf. Five stars collection!
