1.0 out of 5 stars Sexist Man-hating Garbage., 24 April 2014

This review is from: The Beguiled [DVD] [1971] (DVD)
If you swapped genders on this film: and had a woman trapped in a boys school having bits amputated off her, Germaine Greer would birth an adult rhino in anger, the director would be lynched and the film studio burned down. Sadly, this precursor to the current mainstream Gyllenhaal-hollywood of today says it's ok to kick around, defeat, demoralize and decease an injured veteran main character, as long as they are white/male/hetero. But, the best review for this discouraging, depressing waste of time and money has to come from Clint Eastwood's own condeming comments of it: ""Dustin Hoffman and Al Pacino play losers very well. But my audience like to be in there vicariously with a winner. That isn't always popular with critics. My characters have sensitivity and vulnerabilities, but they're still winners. I don't pretend to understand losers. When I read a script about a loser I think of people in life who are losers and they seem to want it that way. It's a compulsive philosophy with them. Winners tell themselves, I'm as bright as the next person. I can do it. Nothing can stop me." - Clint Eastwood, commenting on "The Beguiled". Watch something more positive. Avoid this hateful, mental poison.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shove off, Christian Bale...here's a real superhero!, 22 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A striking, very pose-able figure of the infuriatingly perfect Kamen Rider Sasword. Comes complete with the scorpion Zecter ("Standby!") and two versions of 'the sword', both merged with the scorpion Zecter.
Front, back and both arm armour in orange give a radically different armoured "Masked Form".
A press of the button and it's "Cast off!" and the armour goes flying in four directions, immediatly slimming Sasword down for built-for-speed action in the violet purple "Rider Form". Plenty of pose-abiltiy and balance...and way more fun, playable and durable than a figurarts. This best-at-everything milionaire has the mansion, has the family tree...and has a butler who works for him, not the other way round (unlike all those Hollywood wusses in rubber suits who take orders from their ancient butlers!). Throw away those depressing, iconicoclastic hero-hating Nolan dvd's and buy this: Bandai's Kamen Rider Sasword C.O.R Cast Off Rider 04. As Tsurugi says "I am the one who will replace Bat-Bale with a slashing Sword!"
A superb action figure that's impossibe to disapoint....from one of the greatest ever television shows of all time, and arguably the best Rider tv series: "Kamen Rider Kabuto".

4.0 out of 5 stars Kaman Rider Den-O Sword Form by Bandai, 22 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A good six & 1/2 inch figure of Kamen Rider Den-O in 'Sword Form' (that is, Momotaros possessing Ryutaro). If you don't mind a few paint applications missing (or don't mind doing some additional custom paint work) this is the one for you. (Otherwise, it's the Theatre Exclusive Advance Cinema ticket premium Bandai Kamen Rider Den-O Sword Form LE Repaint Figure, which it's excellent tiny painted details; but it's rare and therefore very pricey.) This more affordable standard release won't disapoint. A superb collectible from the greatest time-travel show ever, and one of the greatest television shows of all time: "Kamen Rider Den-O".

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth your time or money. Or mine., 19 Dec 2013
This review is from: The U.F.O. Files [DVD] (DVD)
The other reviews here on amazon are correct. These docs are primarily boring, and it's not worth the wait for any of the slightly more interesting bits. Skeptical is one this, but the tone is just cynical. Don't wait for any visual, informational or revelational 'money shots' because there's nothing new here.

As for the wandering unidentified guy who looks a bit like Gerard Depardieu (MIB = Man in Bland-documentaries?), he's as annoying as having to listen to all these English dubbed-over interviews.

If you have this set: put it into a charity shop.

If you don't have this set: when, not if, you see this set in a charity shop, leave it there.

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT MULTI REGION ! (Philips DVP3600/05 3000 Series DVD Player), 6 Feb 2013
I've had a test run of this product, Philips DVP3600/05 3000 Series DVD Player, and let me confirm, it is ONLY Region 2 compatible, it will reject other-region dvds with a "Wrong Region" message.

I've been online, and there are no hack-codes to make this one multi-region. Because it isn't. I've tried some codes that work on other philips players that are multi, such as the DVp3800, but it doesn't work on this model.

Customers of a high-street catalogue shop, have, on their website, asked if this is multi-region, and that shop confirmed it's not, that it's only only only a Region 2 player.

It will read some discs that are harder for older players to read, but as I haven't had access to this model for any length of time, I'll leave it to other reviewers to tell you how long this model lasts, etc.

3.0 out of 5 stars "Creature Double Feature" Theme Music (on ELP's "Brain Salad Surgery"), 19 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Brain Salad Surgery (Audio CD)
I bought this for the theme music from "Creature Double Feature"...which is the track "Toccata" from this album. Bonus, "Karn Evil 9 1st Impresession Part 2" is on here too. That's the track that begins with the lyrics "Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends"...etc...'you gotta see the show, it's rock n roll'. Yeah, that one.

Yikes, I thought I knew what 'prog rock' was...nope! I only thought I did. Floyd, Gabriel, Marillion, Queensryche all have some 'prog' to greater or lesser amounts. ELP must be 'heavy prog'. Make that 'Pro-Progressive Prometheus Proto-Prog Rock': ricocheting off itself like a formula one pinball machine.
More skillfull than a typing pool.
More expertly timed than a kung fu movie.
Madder than a drama class.
Intergalactically egotistical.

Well, I got two tracks I wanted, and I'm suitably challenged by the rest.

This 2011 cd from Legacy Sony plays lovvverly, and is smartly packaged (nice booklet).

However, I'm backing away very slowly from these guys.

"UFO SPECIAL EDITION - UFO Secret - The Truth About UFO's Over Russia"
(Quantum Leap)

I hate to admit it, because I love docs like this, but this isn't as enjoyable as most docs you'll see on cable tv in the UK. Information (which I won't review here, I can't bear to watch this again to give it a decent review) isn't everything, a production needs to be entertaining to be enjoyable. (Open minded I may be about some mysterious subjects, but ultimatly, I view docs like this for entertainment.)

Even at a good price, I'm wondering whether this deserves shelf space, or should be donated to a charity shop, or hidden away on a shelf resevered for "meh" or "nyahh" dvd's.

Even when a production is bad, bland or just boring: it's not a guilty pleasure if there's no pleasure.

There are better docs covering this topic (there's been better on cable) or similar.

Come on Ian Gomm

4.0 out of 5 stars has "Hold On" full track, unedited (unlike "Summer Holiday" cd from Line), 21 July 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Come on Ian Gomm (Audio CD)
If you're looking for the classic hit "Hold On", you'll find it here, full & unedited. (Unlike Line's CD release of Ian Gomm's "Summer Holiday" which has a second or two of "Hold On" chopped off the beggining and included in the previous track's ending! Useless for uploading to your personal music device for when walking or jogging; or for playing the track on it's own).

As for the other tracks on "Come On": fairly good, a mixed bag...but as none really grab me (so far) the way "Hold On" does, I'll leave it to others to review them. 2 or 3 stars for this CD, but 5 Stars for "Hold On" which is worth the price of the whole cd.

"Hold On" is a sensitive number, which seems at first to be a sad song. However, it's actually edifying and re-enforcing.
A clean, clear track....with an intricate texture, delicate melody, gentle vocals, some sexy saxophone (I read that "Hold On" features saxophone from Raf Ravenscroft of 'Baker Street' fame). The lyrics are bittersweet and reflective in the verses; answered by an optimistic, encouraging, hopeful chorus. Such simple words, such deep emotion!
Check out these lyrics:

I've been drifting on the sea of heartbreak
Tryin' to get myself ashore
For so long, for so long

Listenin' to the strangest stories
Wondering where it all went wrong
For so long, for so long

But Hold On, Hold on, Hold On
To what you've got

I've been dreaming of a new tomorrow
And wakin' in the morning sun
For so long, for so long

There's no time for revolution
I've got to be travellin' on
Here so long, for so long

But Hold On, Hold on, Hold On
To what you've got

So Hold On, Hold on, Hold On
To what you've got

1.0 out of 5 stars Line's CD Ian Gomm "Summer Holiday": incomplete track: 'Hold On' !, 4 July 2012
This review is from: Summer Holiday (Audio CD)
Line's cd of Ian Gomm "Summer Holiday" is incomplete. The track 'Hold On' has an abruptly cropped intro.

Remember "Hold On"'s buzy, frantic, jangly guitar intro? Well, the first second or two of it are on the previous track, and are missing from the "Hold On" track itself, so when you play it, it starts too abruptly. Whether you play it on your PC, DVD player, or upload it to your personal music device, you won't get the whole track...coz the first bit of it has been accidently left in the previous track.

"Hold On" is the only reason I'd buy this CD, (a very hard track to find elsewhere on CD)...and because they botched separating the tracks on this CD, you can't play the whole song from the beginning.

Waste of time, money and waste of a great song/track!!

1.0 out of 5 stars AVOID! New Recordings. NOT THE CLASSIC TRACKS!!, 23 Feb 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: All the No1's (Audio CD)
New recordings, not the originals. "Kiss You All Over" lacks those keyboards and overwhelming backing vocals of the original 1978 hit track. The version here? It's less 1978 rock, more 'Bob's Country Bunker'. The title of this compilation claims to have 10 #1 hit singles.....it doesn't have any, as those tracks don't appear on this CD. These are new recordings, not the recordings that all made each made it to #1. Don't Waste Your Cash!! This 2002 Intercontinental Records & Cassettes released CD DOES NOT have the original recordings that were hits in the charts. (And neither does the 2009 Exile compilation from Allegro Corporation "Kiss You All Over", with or without it's metal tin case).
Now to find out which CD has the original 1978 recording of Exile's "Kiss You All Over"...
