5.0 out of 5 stars A great book, a pity about the supplier, 12 May 2012

This product was delivered to me damaged. The book's binding was torn on arrival. I have sent in a complaint. The supplier, Any Books, is impossible to deal with and does not respond to my emails regarding consumer rights when goods not of merchantable quality are supplied.

The book itself is beautiful. It's a coffee-table book but scholarly too. However, it's not so useful as companion to reading the Bible, so as to understand better what is going on in the ancient text. There are better books for that, "The New Jerome" is super for that, and the cheaper and less weighty, Lion book also. However, this book is a great pleasure to dip into. Its illustrations and reproductions of art works connect ancient texts with a European heritage that was once strong.

Avoid Any Books though. I don't hear even their "long withdrawing roar, retreating to the breath of the night wind". In fact I cannot hear anything from them about my complaint about the volume they sent me, damaged.

Raymond E Brown is a super scholar and writer on Scripture. This book, like his other short surveys of the Nativity, the Passion and the Community of the Beloved Disciple, is a very good read and opens fuller perspectives on the topics covered. Not all of us can see the events of the four gospel accounts so comprehensively and Brown is a guide I would strongly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Augustine of Hippo, by Henry Chadwick, 6 Feb. 2012

Henry Chadwick is an excellent writer. This book, like his history of the early Christian church,is a delight to read. The man is clear in his presentation of the facts and issues and makes all, even the most complex events and ideas that he recounts stand in a new, a better light than other accounts that I have read of Augustine.

Paths of the Messiah: Sites of the Early Church from Galilee to Jerusalem
Paths of the Messiah: Sites of the Early Church from Galilee to Jerusalem

5.0 out of 5 stars Bargil Pixner, "Paths of the Messiah", 18 Dec. 2011

A very useful presentation of research results and of traditions preserved by early church fathers and pilgrims. Anyone with an interest in Jerusalem and the sites of apostolic times should think of this as a super, lively presentation of what archeology, texts and traditions reveal.
His two earlier, I think, books on the events in the gospels and their geographical setting are also wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Landmark classical texts, 18 Dec. 2011

This series is an essential. It is not possible to read ancient historical texts without maps. This series provides lots of maps. Lots are needed to read about territories, lands and towns that emerged, faded or changed over time, sometimes even over a relatively short time.
It is hard to explain why other publishers produce such texts without maps or with inadequate maps.
