The David Essex Double Bill [DVD]
The David Essex Double Bill [DVD]
Dvd ~ David Essex
Price: £8.00

5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best pair of rock & roll movies ever., 24 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had better qualify my heading. There are many classic Rock & Roll films around that are better in terms of music. These are not musicals or even pop star vehicles. Instead you get a pair of films charting the life or Jim MacLaine and are proper stories that happen to involve music. That'll Be The Day starts with him at school and deciding to run away from home. He works at a travelling fairground and a holiday camp where he meets the resident rock group. Eventually he marries and settles down but…

It's an excellent story with a soundtrack of late 50s and early 60s Rock & Roll hits which work perfectly.

Stardust moves forward to the 1960s and Jim is now fronting The Straycats (not the rockabilly band of the same name) and we see his rise to stardom and subsequent fall due to drugs. It is all very convincing.

David Essex already had a history of both singing and acting, most notably playing Jesus on stage in the musical Godspell so dies not struggle with the roll.

These are 2 first class stories well written, well acted and superbly directed with good music. Highly recommended for fans of rock music and those who just want to see a good film.

Maybe 3 stars is a bit generous. The plot is silly. The band play themselves in a fictional story involving gangsters. in Fiji. It is probably just as well that it is meant to be a comedy because it could never be taken seriously, and the acting isn't that great, but the music is good and it is quite entertaining.

If you like Status Quo then you will enjoy it, but I wouldn't bother if you aren't a fan. It's about 40 years too late really, but it's not the worst pop movie by a long way.

Slade in Flame [DVD/CD]
Slade in Flame [DVD/CD]

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the standard pop star movie, 24 May 2014

This is a film that could surprise you if you have never seen it or are not a fan of Slade. Many singers and bands have made films over the years, usually either semi-documentary or some loose story, usually comedy, to link the songs, but usually having the stars play themselves.

This is different. The members of Slade do play members of a band, called Flame, but it is set about 7 years before it was made and shows how the band formed, gradually rose o stardom and then fell out and split up. It's a complete story and includes the bad side of management with some very good actors backing up he band members. Of course they were not really actors, but, although not playing themselves, they were not exactly stretched by their parts and they come across well.

It's a good story and quite convincing, even now, amazingly 40 years on!

The A-Z of Three-wheelers: A Definitive Reference Guide
The A-Z of Three-wheelers: A Definitive Reference Guide
by Elvis Payne
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £20.51

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant. Packed with information and photos of often very obscure vehicles., 24 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book fills a gap. There have been thousands of books about cars, some of them encyclopaedic, but three-wheelers are rarely dealt with. This book claims to be definitive and I would not disagree. This book has information about every three-wheeled car you might have heard of plus many that you probably haven't, with cross-references to related vehicles. If you are fascinated by cars, even if you have never had any desire to own a three-wheeler, this book is a must.

Dan Dare: Phantom Fleet v. 8 (Dan Dare Deluxe Collector's Editions)

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Dan Dare classic, 24 May 2014

I have been a Dan Dare fan since growing up reading Eagle in the 1950s and 60s. When Hawk Publications started reprinting the classic stories in deluxe editions I started collecting them and reliving my youth. These stories were so well written and drawn that they still hold up today and were remarkable glimpses of the future considering that They started years before the first Sputnik was launched into orbit. Of course we now know that there is no life on the planets in our solar system, but otherwise this is good stuff. Somehow I missed this volume and caught up with a used copy on Amazon which is almost mint condition and well worth buying. The sory itself was a little disappointing, and certainly not he best of Dan Dare, but still very good. Also I now have the complete set!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great stuff!, 30 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It's difficult to describe this in a way that will persuade you that it is actually a very funny sitcom. It features some terrible low-lifes with Johnny Vegas playing a small-time drug dealer whose clients include a serial killer, a pregnant schoolgirl, some nasty gangsters, a policeman who supplies him with packages confiscated in drug busts and a gay man with a succession of very odd boyfriends. This series includes a man murdered in Moz's (Johnny Vegas' character) flat leaving a large blood stain on the wall that resists all attempts to remove or paint over it.

Trust me, this is brilliantly written and very funny. So long as you are not easily offended, you will enjoy it. The fact that the BBC produced 55 episodes says a lot and I am thoroughly enjoying watching it all again on DVD.

Just what I wanted. A relatively cheap back-up camera battery for my Olympus Pen camera, thus overcoming the one minor problem which is the battery running out when I am at an event that needs a lot of photos taking.

First class service with rapid delivery. Perfect.
