5.0 out of 5 stars Elvis at his amazing, magical best., 18 Feb. 2002
Elvis at his amazing, magical best. Collected here are his top hits and most famous cuts from 1957/8... Each track is pure Rock'n'Roll in all its forms from electric energy in A Big Hunk o' Love, soulful blues in One Night, or smoochie sexy doo-wop in Don't. Elvis turns in a complete breathtaking performance on each track that explains exactly why he was 'The King'! His subtlety of voice, clarity of diction, tonal breadth and musical range within the tag of Rock'n'Roller almost mock the term. But it is the sheer power of the performance that grabs one and embeds this album as the greateast ever collection of 50s hits. The cover too of course is probably the most famous album cover in the World with Elvis in his gold lame suite. A golden performance from the golden man himself. Don't miss it.

5.0 out of 5 stars An album that is sorely misjudged., 21 Aug. 2001
An album that is slammed by the critics, but what do they know? This is an album where Elvis puts his whole life into it. It is his last testament, the last complete album he was ever to make. It has a magnificence that only the true fan or someone who can sense the deeper emotions can possibly appreciate. There is a depth and pathos to these recordings that makes every track standout as something special. It is magnificent. Elvis digs this one out of the depth of both his tired and broken body and his soul. He never dug so deep or gave so much, I would say. There is no pretence here, no attempt at showmanship or snow-manning. It is Elvis and the pain he was feeling. You only have to listen to the soulfullness of 'Danny Boy' or the resignation in 'I'll Never Fall In Love Again', to realise that he knew he would not be long for this world when he recorded these songs. In this album Elvis reaches a height and depth he had never accessed since those "SUN" recordings from those heady days of 1954/5. This album should be remembered as one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded.

4.0 out of 5 stars Elvis - nearly at his best., 1 Aug. 2001
This review is from: Date With Elvis (Audio CD)
This Cd comprises some of Elvis' greatest tracks from the SUN studio in Memphis along with some others from 1957. It is Elvis, nearly at his very best, which maks this CD one of the finest one could hope from any artist or group involved in the Rock genre. The SUN tracks are of course legendary. This was the moment when the youth culture was born and without it, there would have been no Beatles or Rolling Stones. The 60s started here and this moment is ecapsulated in this CD. Miss it at your peril. The RCA recordings from '57 have lost that edge, hence 4 stars and not 5, but nothing remains revolutionary that long! Elvis is still excellant as he sings Baby I Don't Care or the moody Young and Beautiful and these later tracks show why Rock n' Roll could not hold him. He was just far too good a singer; far too accomplished. 4 out of 5 and an excellant buy. I'd recommend it to anyone.
