5.0 out of 5 stars exquisitely executed, 12 May 2012
This review is from: Smiley's People (Paperback)
As far as spy thrillers go this is a perfect storm. Pacing, characterisation, mood, the lurking threat, it's all done brilliantly. Do yourself a favour and read this at a measured pace on a sunny day when there are no other calls on your time. It deserves your attention and if you give it a chance this book will run away with you.

3.0 out of 5 stars not timeless, 8 May 2012
This review is from: Middlemarch (Kindle Edition)
It's hard to fault a book written so long ago for being dated, so I won't. All I'll say is that the years have been kinder to Dickens whose characters and messages feel more enduring. That said, there's plenty to like in this fat book if you take the time. It's of more than historical interest and the story can get hold of you if you give it long enough.

About a Boy
About a Boy
by Nick Hornby
Edition: Mass Market Paperback
Price: £7.99

4.0 out of 5 stars It's about a boy, 8 May 2012
A very nicely written book. It's about two boys, one who should have grown up and one who has to grow up rather too fast. Sensitively done with a light touch and humour injected well. No slap-stick here. A good read.

The Emperor's Knife (Tower and Knife Trilogy)
by Mazarkis Williams
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars great debut, 7 May 2012
I loved this book. A fresh new style and unusual characters. It's not a hack and slash assassin book but there's lots going on. It's like fantasy for grownups.
