Tormented (1960) [DVD]
Tormented (1960) [DVD]
Dvd ~ Richard Carlson
Price: £1.99

1.0 out of 5 stars DIABOLICAL TRANSFER., 5 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Tormented (1960) [DVD] (DVD)
WARNING: This is the most diabolically awful transfer I've ever seen on a DVD. Shocking; a clapped-out exhibition print that looks like it was dumped onto VHS tape before being transferred to DVD, and the sound is so bad you can barely make out the dialogue. Elstree Hill should be ashamed of turning out such dreadful product. You'd be better off buying a bootleg, frankly. Shame, because the film, while a low-level B-movie, has some interesting points.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kindle Edition Warning: Abridged version!, 3 May 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Kindle edition: This is a fascinating book in which the enthusiasm of the author shines through. It contains a lot of new information I've never read before, and is a welcome addition to the literature on this film. However, I do have a few gripes. Primarily, the Kindle edition is ABRIDGED, something I'm quite cross about since there's no warning to this effect prior to purchase; it's mentioned only in small print in the edition itself. Secondly, although author McGee's writing is full of wonderful, inside information, there are rarely any references to indicate where the information came from, or its provenance. This badly lets down the text. Finally, the bibliography is terribly sparse. A good purchase, but you might be better buying the print edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY THE BEST!, 16 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Simply the best film science fiction book ever written. Fantastic depth and insight. Even better, Bill Warren, while respecting the role of the director, clearly has no time for the patent nonsense of the auteur theory, exploring the writers' contributions extensively and even seeking out the original scripts on which to comment, as well as covering the contributions of all members of the crew with equal intelligence and appreciation. Most important of all, the book is immense fun, and often very, very amusing. Worth every penny, despite the price.

Running from the Hunter: The Life and Works of Charles Beaumont (Milford Series: Popular Writers of Today)
Running from the Hunter: The Life and Works of Charles Beaumont (Milford Series: Popular Writers of Today)
by Harold Lee Prosser
Edition: Paperback
Price: £10.80

1.0 out of 5 stars Hugely disappointing, 2 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A hugely disappointing book. It claims to be a "comprehensive survey of the author's work", yet it completely ignores any exploration of his extensive film and television works, barely even mentioning them in passing. Very deceptive blurb. Even Beaumont's prose work is given short shrift, the bulk of the text focussing merely on synopses of each story instead of in-depth analysis. Charles Beaumont deserved much better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but an intellectual over-reach, imo., 2 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very well researched book on an all-time classic movie. The analysis is penetrating, but sometimes a little too clever for its own good. Much of it is valid, but in my opinion the authors over-reach themselves on occasion, particularly when they start looking for (and finding!) phallic symbolism in the imagery - not to mention the rather suspect interpretation of the ventriloquist's dummy sequence. The film-makers would doubtless be horrified. It's a shame, because this is an otherwise interesting read.

Fearing the Dark: The Val Lewton Career
Fearing the Dark: The Val Lewton Career
by Edmund G. Bansak
Edition: Paperback
Price: £36.95

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK ON VAL LEWTON, 2 Mar. 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A wonderful book, fully the equal of Joel Siegel's THE REALITY OF TERROR and probably superior. Thoroughly researched with expert analyses of Lewton's films. Occasionally, I disagreed with Bansak's interpretations or views on a particular issue, but that's par for the course with any book which seeks to interpret film. It's an insignificant point, and FEARING THE DARK is one of the best books I've read, not just on Lewton, but on any film reference work. Worth every penny, even at the inflated prices caused by it being long out of print.

5.0 out of 5 stars A hilarious and biting must-read book!, 5 Sept. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A must-read book for anyone interested in the perverse and increasingly-ingrained politicisation of science. Science used to be objective, but nowadays is used more and more as a tool of propaganda. Mark Steyn's book is scathing and hilarious in equal measure.
