Crewel Twists: Fresh Ideas for Jacobean Embroidery
Crewel Twists: Fresh Ideas for Jacobean Embroidery
by Hazel Blomkamp
Edition: Paperback
Price: £13.48

5.0 out of 5 stars Jacobean embroidery, 22 Jan. 2014
This is a fabulous book; it gives instructions for creating several Jacobean style pictures - which could be used for cushions or bags, etc.

As well as making the projects by following the instructions, it would be easy to use the ideas to make your own picture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kaleidoscope folding is tea bag folding by another name, 29 Mar. 2013
This is a lovely little book with some super ideas for tea bag folding - but I can't use it! Why not? Because all the designs are based on papers which I cannot find on sale in the UK. They are available in the States, but the cost, once you've added in all the extra postage etc., is horrendous!

The book says that the papers are available from Kars and Co, but I haven't been able to find them. Such a shame, because it is a very nice book.

I think it should be sold WITH the papers!

Effective Phrases for Performance Appraisals: A Guide to Successful Evaluations
Effective Phrases for Performance Appraisals: A Guide to Successful Evaluations
by James E. Neal
Edition: Plastic Comb

4.0 out of 5 stars Performance Appraisals, 30 Nov. 2011
This is first rate. I bought it when I was a junior school teacher to help me with writing reports. Even though it is intended for appraising adults, it has such a wealth of good phrases it was very easy to adapt it to reports on 10 year olds. There were more suggestions, and they covered a wider spectrum, than I expected. If you have to write reports or reviews on people, for any reason, I think this book would help you. It helped me.

19th Century Embroidery Techniques
19th Century Embroidery Techniques
by Gail Marsh
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £16.99

5.0 out of 5 stars 19th Century Embroidery Techniques, 30 Nov. 2011
This is brilliant! I first read the author's book on 20th century embroidery and it was fabulous. I then bought this one - if anything, it is better than the 20th century one. It is hard to say why - maybe just because I'm more interested in the 19th century. Both books are absolutely excellent. If you like embroidery you will love this book. There are others in the series and I intend to buy them all.

This is outstanding! It is a gripping read, and full of fascinating snippets about the embroiderers of the past, the techniques and products that they used, their stitches and designs. If you are into embroidery you MUST buy this book. I also bought the 19th Century one by the same author - it is just as wonderful. I am going to get the whole series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art of Crewel Embroidery, 30 Nov. 2011
This book was as described and arrived promptly. It is a large book (224 pages), and I have not yet read it all. It starts with an interesting chapter on the history of Crewel work. There is a chapter dealing with colour planning, and lots of information on various stitches, all with diagrams of how to work the stitch. The book was published in 1962, and is written in a rather formal style. It has brilliant ideas, well explained, on design, complete with drawings - 156 units. There is also a "compendium of devices" used in crewel work - in other words a glossary of the different motifs used. I would have liked more colour plates (there are only 10) but that's my only quibble.

5.0 out of 5 stars Iron on Transfers for Jacobean Embroidery, 30 Nov. 2011
This was as described and arrived promptly. It is a fantastic book with really lovely patterns, very Jacobean in style. I have not yet tried out the actual transfer process. It may not be first-rate as this is a pre-owned book, but the book describes how to transfer by other methods. I recommend this book very highly to everyone who is into crewel work or Jacobean design. A great purchase.
