Met my 15 year old's criterion for a good horror movie - not exactly terrifying but interesting enough. We will be watching the sequels.

I like my DIY tools especially when they do what they are supposed to do. I bought this to staple a hardboard radiator cover panel to it's frame and it did and I was happy. Job done.

All the old favourites digitally remastered. Sound wasn't that brilliant to my ears. Shame because some of his best songs are on here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easily the Best Drama Series of All Time !!, 21 Feb 2014
Without giving too much away this is the story of Walter White who at the beginning of the series is a bit like Ned Flanders, Homer Simpson's neighbour. He's quite ethical, doesn't really like conflict and is gently bullied by his wife, her sister and his red-neck brother-in-law who just happens to work for the Drug Enforcement Agency.

Walter works as a chemistry teacher and doesn't get life any easier there where one of his student's ,Jessie Pinkerton, refuses to learn and just makes fun of "Mr White". Walter is, in fact, a brilliant chemist, and once started a company with two of his 'friends'. The latter two stole Walter's ideas, eased him out of the company and are now billionaires.

Things would have all remained the same except that Walter gets diagnosed with terminal cancer. Walter is poor and he wonders how he is going to provide for his wife and son (and baby on the way) when he has gone. He decides he will make crystal meth and team up with Jessie Pinkerton who is already a petty drug dealer. He decides not to tell his wife that he's got cancer or that he is making drugs. These are some of the ethical choices that he makes through all the series which make the whole thing fascinating.

The other thing this story does is obey all the best rules of story telling. The hero (Walter) wants something (money and security for his family - initially anyway) and goes after it. The hero changes - I think Walter at the end of the series must be one of the most changed characters in fiction. The hero 'is put up a tree and has coconuts thrown at him' - just when you think things are going right for Walter and Jessie, it suddenly goes wrong.

There is surprise: this is one of the most surprising dramas I have ever seen. At one point I was expecting to see a bad guy turn up for a rendezvous as the police were. Next thing you see is a mans head on a turtle as the turtle slowly walks across the rendezvous point - but if you think that's surprising, wait and see what happens next. There are no cliche's in this series either. If someone is shot in public and the scene ends you don't hear the usual police sirens, the scene just darkens and ends.

There is lots of humour in breaking bad too. The actors play it serious and it makes it even more hilarious. There's a great scene where the family get around to discuss Walter and Skyler (Walter's wife) instructs that only the person holding a cushion can speak. Walter's lies to his wife are just side splitting.

There are some great subsidiary characters too. Walter's bent lawyer is a registered coward but so very helpful to Walter. He has to be the worst dressed lawyer on film, always dressing in discordant colours which, combined with his quips, make him a hilarious character.

Criticisms. Not many. The titles are really annoying with two capital letter at the beginning of the actors name followed by lower case. Skyler's affair with her boss was interesting in that it showed her hypocrisy but it got a bit soap opera like, in that I felt the episodes could have been briefer. Walt's son has mild cerebral palsy which I have no problem with but why did this aspect of his character not have a function in the drama. It didn't. In fact, the son (cerebral palsy or not) had little function in the drama other than he adored his dad. At the end of the series I wanted a surprise from him - I wanted him to say he knew what his dad was up to all the time and that he's been stealing some of his money or drugs!

Other than that, I have to say it is the best drama series of all times and I have stayed up to the early hours of the morning watching DVD after DVD.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite Utilitarian, 26 Sep 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Well, what can I say? For the price it's not bad. You get plenty of little implements that sort of do their job. The extender ring however, sort of doesn't do its job. This might be the case as well with more expensive extender rings but using this device it took me ages to cook a chicken and the vegetables at the bottom of the halogen just weren't done. Since my rationale for having a halogen is speedy cooking - having an extender just ain't worth it. So I wouldn't bother getting an extender of any variety or cost. Given that, I didn't fork out too much for this, I'm not moaning too much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging Book to get your KIds Reading., 6 July 2013

This book is simple to read but is still an excellent thriller and mystery which could easily be made into a film. The main character, Sam is a boy whom children will easily sympathise with and identify with. The chapters are short and split into brief manageable paragraphs. The story moves ahead at pace and there are surprises through the plot which the reader can guess at and an absolutely shocking ending. There was one brief quasi sexual scene in the book which I was not overly happy about my 14 year old daughter reading, so maybe if your child is the 9+ recommended for this book you may want to approach with caution.

Bali Rai also comes to schools to promote his book. My daughter enjoyed his talk so much she mithered me to buy his book of Amazon. We are both glad we did. The book does not patronise and all books should be written like this - there is nothing worse than a long solid block of paragraph for a reader or an eternal chapter. We'll be buying more Bali Rai.
