I saw this in the cinema many years ago and was thoroughly enchanted by it.
In the intervening years I have probably got a bit cynical and found it a bit
whimsical for my present taste. However it is beautifully done and should please
ant young person with an interest in dance.

You either adore her, as I do, or you think she sounds like a cat on the roof. Many of the items on these disc I have on various discs so it is nice to have them on this set. I shall sit back in my armchair and enjoy many a pleasureable evening. If you are a fellow admirer sit back and enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars To Globe or not to Globe?, 12 Dec 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Shakespeare's Globe [DVD] (DVD)
This film starts just about the time the theatre opened to the public. It is a pity that the early history is not covered. Sam Wannamaker had a terrible time getting it started. Everybody, including myself, thought he was out of his mind. However it is now open and is enjoying enormous success. For what it is, this DVD is entertaining and gives a good insight into this remarkable building.

Strictly for Gary Daniels' s fans but not one of his best. He takes second billing to Tracy Elizabeth Lords, whoever she was. It will pass ninety minutes away but that is all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much Ado About Something., 9 Sep 2013

Saw this at Shakespeare's Globe and of all the productions that I have seen this is the standout. I shall be watching it often. Eve Best is certainly the finest Beatrice that I have seen. She says much with her face and body that a lot of her lines are unnecessary. Charles Edwards is the perfect foil as Benedict - brave, gallant and a little bit on a loser when it comes to a battle of words. The rest of the cast are fine. My only quibble is with Paul Hunter as Dogberry who overdoes the whistles and grimaces. Director Jeremy Herrin should have kept him under tighter control. Even if you are not a fan of Will this is a production that can make you one. Go buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars What can you say about trousers?, 9 Sep 2013

Not a lot when you think about them. As long as they fit and are comfortable that is all that matters. On both counts these are. If they have your size and the colour you want, then go ahead and buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars All hail King Jamie, 31 July 2013

Having seen this at the Globe as well as on tour I was looking forward to this and was not disappointed. I have seen quite a few Henry V productions over the years this one is up there with the best. I cannot think of any young actor around today who can do it better than Jamie Parker. Dominic Dromgoole's production is a standout - fast, witty and enthralling.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Dummies maybe but......., 31 July 2013

I found it wordy and confusing. Although only one person is listed as the author, I get the impression that it was written by a committee al of whom had to have a say about everything. Their motto seems to" be why use one word when you can use five". Perhaps I am getting too old for this as I had to read instructions two or three times to understand them. I am slowly getting things sorted out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great productions recorded for posterity., 16 Mar 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As a regular at Shakespeare's Globe I had seen all these but the design of the theatre, based as near as possible on the original, means that there are incidents that you miss. With the action on three sides, pillars and other distractions this cannot be helped. With these DVDs you see everything and in closeup.
It is a great joy to have these performances on record especially Roger Allam's Falstaff . He is not afraid to show the character's sheer nastyness and his comic timing is perfect. Jamie Parker's Prince Hal is the best I have seen in many a long year. His explanatory speech at the begining of Part ! sets the tone superbly.I hope to see both of them back at the Globe before too long.
Henry VIII is not often performed thesre days but this production proves what a good play it is. Dominic Rowan as Henry captured the capricious nature of the king. All jolly one minute and vicious when someone opposes him. Kate Duchene was dignified as Queen Catherine I could go on but will just finish by saying"if you are unsure about Shakespeare buy these.
