Stoner: A Novel (Vintage Classics)
Stoner: A Novel (Vintage Classics)
by John Edward Williams
Edition: Paperback
Price: 6.29

5.0 out of 5 stars I was swept away by this wonderful book., 11 April 2014
I have just finished reading 'Stoner' and agree that it is as beautiful and elegant as the man himself. It is a very long time since I have read (with every opportunity possible) a novel that tugs at my heart as this one. You don't need to know the synopsis as other reviewers have already done that. I have never fallen in love with a character as I have in William Stoner. He makes mistakes like any human and is as vulnerable and ordinary as any human. I went on a journey of his life but in many ways it is like a rollercoaster ride - not fast and dangerous but full of climbs, drops and loops. He meets the kind of people we all meet in life - the kind that define us and the kind that can destroy us - if we allow them to. If you love well written stories then you must read 'Stoner' - it really is as good as the reviewers and critics say. Try to get the elegant clothbound hardback because it is a book that deserves such love and attention.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best, 2 Nov 2013

This is the best story from such a great story teller. Zafon is a master of mystery and the macabre and this story is full of it. It is also something of a love story between the two main characters. I don't want to spoil it for you I just know you will love it if you are a fan of Zafon. Even if you have never read any of his books you will love this one and want to read his others. I believe this book is even better than Shadow of the Wind - that takes some beating!

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Done Busuu, 22 Sep 2013

A different way of learning a language but also a brilliant way. It gives you different exercises that help the words stick in your mind for longer. This is done by reinforcing the words by hearing and seeing them in the context of other words. First you hear the words, then it is done in the form of a conversation with a few questions on the conversation. It then gives you some multiple choice short answers as well as sentence construction. Once I have got through Italian I am looking to perhaps learn Spanish. Well Done on the product and even more congratulations on the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Different Manfredi story but just as good as his best, 26 May 2013
This review is from: A Winter's Night (Kindle Edition)
Another great tale by the author though quite different from his usual dip into the ancient past. This book introduces us to the Bruni family and tells the story over the course of two world wars. Like his other books, Manfredi paints a picture without being overly flowery. The narrative is superb and you can't help but have sympathy for the well constructed characters. This is a tale that is well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read., 7 April 2013

Probably his best book in my opinion. It has all of the elements required of an adventure story. There is triumph and tragedy, love and combat, happiness and sadness as well as some great characters...some very complex in nature. It is just, simply put a great adventure story.

A great example of Pat Barker at her best. It isn't what is said but what isn't said that makes this book such compulsive reading. The main character in the Regeneration trilogy (Billy Prior?) Was an intriguing character and Danny is just as fascinating. The book is well worth reading and celebrates Barkers gift of creating good story lines as well as good characters.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not our Jimmy, 27 Oct 2006
This review is from: Smalltown Boy '94 (Audio CD)
As the title suggests I have to let you know that the lead singer is Steve Bronski and not the haunting and soulful sound of Jimmy Somerville. The original 12 inch version was a real collectors item. This version is basically SB arranging and singing an acoustic mix and a few dance mixes which aren't bad, but simply put - it isn't JS!
