Someone has to temper the enthusiasm of these first four reviews. If you know Hancock very well, you are likely to find these a disappointment. The announcer begins the show, as ever, with the names of the original cast, but it soon becomes apparent that we are listening to others. The replacements for Bill, Andre and the Kenneth Williams characters all attempt to copy those original voices - more difficult for Williams, since there are always three to five distinct ones, and not all are well captured. Bill, for example, is too brashly Australian and too enthusiastic. As for the two principal characters, well Sid James is rendered in a way quite unlike the original, while Hancock is given a lightish tenor voice, rather stagey, not unlike a young Martin Jarvis. Hancock and the others also seem to hurry through the lines. The famous timing of Hancock typically meant judging the length of a pause - here there are none, it seems. I conclude that the actors did not spend enough time studying the originals and that the production team did not spend enough time and effort finding the right actors and director, and finally also that the recording used was made too soon. Think, for example, of classical music recordings in which the conductor goes and listens attentively to each take and then comes back and does a retake pointing out what must be improved. Unfortunately, that level of attention to detail has not been attempted here. And I am not convinced either that the laughter is always live and spontaneous. By all means listen to these, but my judgement is that few Hancockians will want to listen again and again, as with the originals.

Symphonies 4 and 1 for Piano Four Hands
Symphonies 4 and 1 for Piano Four Hands

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing sound and performances, 1 July 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I had never heard of this duo but thought I might take a chance on the disc having been very pleased with a number of the excellent Brahms discs for four hand piano on Naxos with Matthies and Köln. I hate to speak ill of the dead - see Wikipedia article on this duo - but I have not enjoyed their performances of either symphony. There was a perfunctory feel to the fourth (though it received at least one rave review back in the day) and the first seems to lack any of the drama we might normally associate with this monument of the symphonic repertoire. Further, the symphonies were recorded in 1982 (fourth - analogue) and 1984 (digital) and the apparent lack of remastering has done little for the sound, muffled and tubby, markedly so in the fourth (at least as far as my equipment shows, which is modest but by no means rudimentary). The Naxos series requires you to buy two discs to get these works, well I guess I will have to stump up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revelatory and enchanting, 8 Feb. 2014
This review is from: Gershwin: Piano Works (Audio CD)
Braley is a classical pianist who plays Gershwin in a style I've never heard before, almost as if it were Ravel or Debussy. The music benefits and Gershwin comes up shiny and new. Even familiar tunes like 'The man I love' and 'I got rhythm' are made more than interesting. Sonically too, the recording is a delight. Strongly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very old recordings, 29 Sept. 2013

Do not be overly seduced by the low prices available. These are 1930s mono recordings with wobbly and opaque sound. Only, I would suggest, of interest for those who want 'historic' recordings of these pieces.

Classic swing tunes performed excellently by a large orchestra made up of professional classical musicians in very lively sound. Turn it up and connect with your neighbours.

This is not a set of orchestral arrangements, but a set of sung covers, some quite good, interspersed with some orchestral arrangements.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 23 Mar. 2013

I was brought up on fuzzy LPs in the sixties and became so familiar with some music that I did not think for many years that it might be worth looking again. Indeed these pieces are a revelation in modern sound. We can hear how good the musicians all are. This is serious sexy music, played excellently. Firmly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value, 23 Mar. 2013

The first disc is mainly British music and the third Scandinavian. The second is more mixed. What it adds up to is a sort of glorious Naxos sampler, well worth buying at the prices advertised.

These are very old recordings in poor sound. Recording dates are not given, but Fritz Busch, one of the conductors featured here, died in 1951.
