These are both masterpieces, and very important additions to any Henze collection. However; the performance of 'Cantata della fiaba estrema' is nowhere near as good as the Edda Moser one, also currently available, so buy that disc as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars of (not the best quality) music by Birtwistle with Celan's texts (in the ..., 17 Aug 2014
This is actually an unsatisfactory piece - Birtwistle really doesn't seem to 'get' Celan nor his poetry, so we are left with 60+ mins. of (not the best quality) music by Birtwistle with Celan's texts (in the WRONG language - why?) sitting uncomfortably on top. Oh dear, how very English!

1.0 out of 5 stars beautiful work, but this certainly isn't it, 17 Aug 2014
Heiner Goebbels can produce challenging and, occasionally, beautiful work, but this certainly isn't it. Instead, it wastes an evocative text by the great Heiner Muller by having it babbled by a host of, apparently, semi-literate Americans for no particular reason, cross-cut with various passages in different 'world' music styles. Yes, the idea is that of a journey, but this is neither gritty urban alienation or mythic dreamscape.

If you want to explore Goebbels' work don't start here.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best..., 15 July 2014
Quite simply, this is still one of the best films ever made! Leone explores the genre's own mythic status with insight and genuine poetry. the visual style is unique, and the cast is superb! Henry Fonda is a revelation, and the other leads are all giving their best throughout.

Finally, the music: Morricone's score is one of the two or three greatest ever written for a film, and the marriage of visual and musical gesture is incomparable. Operatic - yes! But that's what opera should be all about.

Unmissable!

Harmony: A New Way of Looking at Our World

2.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity!, 26 Jun 2014

HRH's motive are worthy, and it is difficult to fault many of the charitable works, etc. he is involved with. Poundbury is another matter, of course!, a blot on the town of Dorchester and its environs of epic proportions. However, as a writer, even with the of two of his closest aides, this is a piece of typically woolly British ecological prose. Why is it that some many English language ecologists seem unable to apply logic or structure to their arguments? I am deeply concerned with ecological matters, but I wouldn't be if I relied on this stuff for philosophical grounding and encouragement.

Prince Charles could have saved himself and everyone else a lot of time and effort by reading and reflecting on Martin Heidegger's two seminal essays 'The Question Concerning Technology' and 'The Turn', both of which are available in a number of good inexpensive English translations. It's all there in lest than 60 pages! Thought through at a level unrivalled in depth and richness.

Don't waste valuable reading time, go to the source.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent disc!, 16 Aug 2013

This review is from: Imaginary Landscapes (Audio CD)
This is an excellent disc, with only one minor quibble (see below). The sound is great, and there is a real sense of live music-making from this really committed Italian group. The music itself is strange, haunting and completely fresh.
One really important bonus: the disc also includes Cage's 'Sixteen Dances', a key work, especially in tracing the Cage-Boulez exchanges of the early 1950s.
One quibble: the' Landscapes' are presented in the sequence 1,3,5,2 + 4, with no break between them!

Satin Rouge [DVD] [2002] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Dvd ~ Hiam Abbass

'Satin Rouge' is a gem of a film. Taking a potentially slightly tacky story and turning it into pure, understated enjoyment. Hiam Abbass is wonderful as a widow slowly changing her life, and her daughter's, with the help of some new friends and the power of music and dance. The quiet tone and keen observation of the camera helps to intensify every action, however ordinary, and adds weight to the quite spare dialogue.

This is a beautiful introduction to Arabic cinema for grown ups: no hysteria, beautiful acting, vivid characterisation, and a million miles away from most Western views of North African society.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, 30 Mar 2012
These recordings of two of Feldman's last and most hypnotically beautiful piano scores are exemplary in ever way!

Sabine Liebner has a wonderful sense of the music's pacing and an enviable range of expressive touch. She admirably controls the different senses of pacing, especially in 'For Bunita Marcus', which, as I know as performer of the work, can be an enormous challenge. The recording quality is excellent too! More please...

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent!, 3 Jan 2012

This is a fantastic disc, not only is the music great but the standard of performance is quite remarkable too!

Spahlinger's music is never going to be easy, but this is a very good place to start listening; the sound world of each piece is distinctive and often heart-stoppingly refinded, and the running lengths are not as extreme as a number of Spahlinger's other works.

If you are serious about contemporary German music this is unmissable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be warned!, 22 July 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a lovely disc, and the playing is typically refined. Although not quite of the musical quality of the first two discs in the set it is still a real gem.
However, be warned - the printed tracks and timings are completely in the wrong order! This is confusing, and a surprise from the usually well produced Naxos label.
