5.0 out of 5 stars NZ rocks. Shihad are back!, 27 Jan. 2003
Yes Pacifier are one and the same band. They had to change their name because after 9:11 Americans thought that Shihad was the same as Jihad. Anyway down to buisness. This is an album of hook laden melodic rock with attitude. There is none of the self-pity of nu-metal or Nicklebackish grunge just lots and lots of conviction. 'Bullitproof' has made a great single (and is a live favourite) it is catchy, hard as nails and positive. How could anyone not enjoy it. It sums up their stance; here we are, this is what we are and if you don't like it stuff you. They slow the tempo for tracks such as 'Home' and 'Stranger' but after the third listening you will find the tunes running around your head all the time. This is definately an album to put on in the car and drive too fast. After all it is difficult not to floor the throttle to 'Semi-Normal' and 'Nothing'. They may never make it big in the UK or the US but there is a reason why they are huge in the Antipodes...simply this is a great album.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best ginger rock ever!, 29 Aug. 2002
I'm finding it difficult to believe that no-one else has reviewed this excellent album before me. As if it were not good enough getting the album that this year will be remembered for, they are giving away a 5 track live DVD. It's a bargin! Where to start? Did you like "Rated R"? This one is not quite as emmidiate but after three listens you will be hooked. If you liked Kyuss, or just damn good rock and roll, this will keep you entertained. For me "Know One Knows" is the stand out track, giving Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) the opportunity to thump out a killer rhythm. If your foot aint tappin', you're dead. The new version of "Hangin' Tree" (see The Desert Sessions for the original) is another stormer, but I'm now on my fourth listen and I am begining to chock on all the superlatives. Homme and Oliveri epitomize the rock and roll attitude. I don't think that they know how to make bad records. So what if the radio station concept album has been done before, they get guest "DJ's" like Casey Chaos and Twiggy Ramirez the album would be worth buying just for their contributions. If you want to own THE feel good hit of THIS summer, go out and buy this now. You will not regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the unimaginative., 1 July 2002
If you are one of those people that insist on confusing music with tunes, then this is not for you. There are no tunes on this double CD. All the sounds are manipulated from insect noises into a bizarre psychedelic soundscape. The liner notes suggest playing the two CDs simultaniously from different sources. I can thoughly recommend sticking disc one on random and disc two on repeat turning the volume up and sinking into a quantum world.
It is impossible to describe this music but if you like the more ambient sections of Old Man Gloom, or Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, or Sunn O))), 0r Anthony Braxton, or even the less tuneful bits of Mogwai; then there is a good chance of you enjoying this. If you've never heard of any of the above but are looking for something a bit different and more challenging, then look no further. If you can put away preconceptions and just listen then you will find a new and exciting experiance here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! I'm not easily impressed but, WOW!!!, 14 Mar. 2002

I've been buying music of all sorts for a very long time and this is the most excited I've been for years. The singles were magnificent (if you have not already bought 'Justboy' then shame on you) but in the context of a whole album you have the best new (insert label here, they will defy any pigeon-holing you can think of) band for an age. The album starts mellow with 'Joy.discovery.invention' but they are howling by the end of the track. They do quiet/loud with the best of them (Mogwai, Aereogramme) whilst sounding like no-one else. My favourites are 'Kill the Old, Torture their Young' and 'Scary Mary' but there's not a bad song to be heard and the energy is tremendous throughout. Buy this!

3.0 out of 5 stars For completests only., 8 Nov. 2001

The two proper BOC tracks on this are both stormers. No nonsense mindless boogie, as they say. The instrumentals (ie. most of the album, serve as incidental music for the film (I presume, I've never seen it) and that is where they belong. I am prepared to bet that the Ukelaliens who play "Old Lady Polka" are the Cult in disguise, it is a great novelty item showing their sense of humour. The rest of the album is at best average.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb!, 31 Oct. 2000

I have read reviews of Music For People, obviously written by people expecting a metal album and not liking it. Have you not listened to Visual Audio Sensory Theatre? It's not a metal album. Buy this album, by the end of 'Last Man Alive' you'll be hooked. Yes it can be gentle, yes it is different, but boy is it passionate! If you can listen to 'My TV and You' without at least one whistful sigh you have no feelings. He is on tour soon I'll see you there.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is awsome!, 18 Oct. 2000
This review is from: Sub (Audio CD)
If you are expecting Celtic Frost part two, forget it. Tom Warrior has moved on. This is metal for a new millenium and it burns. Its as heavy as a fat hippo in wellies, as industrial as Shefield on a Friday night and as experimental as Stephen Hawkins trying to re-write Shostokovich in four-four time. There is not a bad track on the album and if you already have "God Leaves" and are concerned that some of the tracks are repeated, fear not the remix of Concrete Satan is better than the original and whilst Reefer Boy may not be better as such, it is different and as good.
