It looks lovely, however the frame is a bit flimsy and the drawers do not glide well. Overall I think it is very overpriced.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hard-Working Artist, 31 Dec. 2013

What a wonderful film. I do love art but I am not interested in pretentious or mystical art-talking. For me, art is mainly a lot of hard work at the service of a sensitive mind, and this film shows precisely that: a 70-year old artist reinventing his art in a u-turn both in technique and subject, facing up to the physical challenges of plein-air painting in all weathers and seasons -sometimes even working on 6 canvases mounted on 3 easels! It was a joy to watch, for example, the way David Hockney applied the first brush strokes on a blank canvas, the bold choice of colours, the slow building-up of the painted image, the real act of creation which for us amateur artists is so eye-opening. And his obsession with certain places, which he paints again and again. I loved the sequence that shows the several versions of the spot that Hockney calls The Tunnel.

In a broader perspective, the film takes us on a journey through the latest creative developments in Hockney's art: from his photographic, collage-like work in USA to vivid watercolour landscapes painted on location back in his native Yorkshire, which encouraged him to make a stronger mark with oils in bigger formats; working in a single canvas soon was not enough to capture his vision of what was in front of his eyes, and then it was six canvases at the same time, and then it is dozens of them forming the most ambitious of works, a huge jigsaw that eventually covered a whole wall in the Royal Academy of Arts in London (to me it was a loop back to the collage mindset)... From humble pencil lines on small sketchbooks to infinity and beyond! Absolutely fascinating.

I do hope that Mr Wollheim will make other films on contemporary artists. I know that I will watch this one again and again.

I have really enjoyed this book: clear explanations, lots of useful information and many demonstrations. The only thing I didn't like was the spiral binding. Normally spiral-bound books are very practical but in this case the system they've chosen is uncomfortable to use.
