I enjoyed Hornby's easy-to-read prose style and, at times, laughed out loud as the characters discover themselves, and each other, along the way.

Having loved every word of The Secret History, I was keen to read more of Tartt's work and this book didn't disappoint. Although it was not as captivating as TSH - in so far as I couldn't physically stop reading TSH! - I enjoyed the complexities of the narrator's life. I found the final events a little out of keeping with the rest of the novel, perhaps, so didn't give 5 stars. I'm about to start The Little Friend now to make it a hatrick !

Do not read just before going to bed as it will either make you angry or giggle. Brilliant but, not suitable for your Nan.

3.0 out of 5 stars A quick and easy read!, 28 April 2013

Good for a holiday read, with a fairly predictable narrative, but sometimes that's just what you want! I would have liked more of Mary's back story, which might have helped create more sympathy for Dottie, and perhaps created a slightly more complex narrative.
