1.0 out of 5 stars I don't believe it, 6 Oct 2013
This review is from: The Long Earth (Paperback)
I can honestly say I've never been both so simultaneously bored and disappointed by a book. Pratchett's collaboration with Neil Gaiman was genuinely inspired. This is barely insipid. Meandering and pointless with a LOT of plot problems (think about the inability to transfer ferrous metals and then how radios etc work) I wish I hadn't bothered.

I believe there are to be two more. I hope they don't get in the way of Pratchett writing in his natural style, - all he has proved here is that his early sci-fi novels (Strata/Dark Side of the Sun) are not simply poor because he is young but poor because his style doesn't work in an sf setting.

I'm checking out of the trilogy at this point.

It has a few issues identifed by other reviewers, but it costs 20 and weighs next to nothing. Compared to a proper wide angle it's easy to slip in the pocket for when you need it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Swedish Bore, 21 Nov 2012
This review is from: The Darkest Room (Paperback)
The sticker on my copy compared this the Stieg Larrson. Or however you spell his name. Apart from both books are written by Swedes and people die in them they have nothing in common.

An uncomfortable mash up of ghost story and modern whodunnit the book fails at more than one level. The desire for realism sits uncomfortably with the idea of the spirits haunting the participants.

The final ocnfrontation is well written, but heavily contrived. Suspense is maintained, but character actions arem uch less logical than the story warrants.

Big disappoinment.

Sennheiser Eco Ear Canal Headphones - Black

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice product, but not durable, 29 Aug 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My pair of these lasted about 6 weeks before the left earphone stopped working. This is outside the Amazon returns warranty, so I'm off to contact the company now.

The sound quality was good, but one ear cable was much shorter than the other, - much, much too short, so it kept getting pulled everytime I turned my head. That may have done the cable connection in, - however compared to the longevity of my Apple iPod original pair which I've had for years, pulled and snagged and they still work fine the build quality isn't good enough.

1.0 out of 5 stars Classic Pure Problem, 3 Jun 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Never trust a review of a Pure product that says the user has just bought it and it's great.

I bought this just over 2 years ago and initially it was super. Then first the base connection to the i-Pod stopped working so you had to plug the cable jack into the i-Pod (meaning the remote was useless). And now it won't recharge the i-Pod, so neither of the functions I bought it for work. It's sole purpose now is to enable the i-Pod to stand upright so at least I know where it is.

Pure's problem is not in the design, it is all in the execution. We have 3 Pure products all of which have developed faults over their life span, some more fatal than others. On the other hand an original Pure radio we bought for a relative when they first launched their products is still going strong.

So if you're looking for a cheap stop-gap until you can afford to splash out on the full Bose set up next year be very wary of this product.

2.0 out of 5 stars There is no alternative, 14 Jan 2012

I've had a Waterman pen for over 15 years now and I've just ordered what will be my third converter. I use the pen every day, so you can work out how long they last. The problem with the two previous ones is that eventually the seal where it pushes into the nib unit splits. When it does ink will leak back into the pen casing, through the screw joint and out all over your hands.

Alas there isn't any other choice, except for using cartridges. I used to find I was forever buying them with my previous pen, so I prefer ink bottles. So, I love my Waterman pen, the quality is excellent and it writes really well. The quality of the converter is great too, - except for the pathetic little plastic seal which will go. So, when you see tell tail little ink droplets on the converter when you fill it, take it out and check the seal carefully. If there's even the hint of a little split stop using it and get a new one.

Otherwise you may end up in an important meeting suddenly looking like you're back in primary school after a handwriting lesson.

What do you expect for 7.99+p&P. They're brilliant. They enable you to focus really close up, although you have to do it manually of course, and that's what they're intended for. I use them to photograph toy soldiers and they work fine down to 6mm figures. If you're concerned that there are no instruction manuals with them then you probably shouldn't use them. Alternatively just put "Extension macro ring" into Google and you'll soon find some advice.

You do have to be careful putting them on and off, - don't force them, and be careful unscrewing the rings, but they're 7.99 for goodness sake. What do you expect? Something built to work on the space shuttle?

1.0 out of 5 stars Seductive piece of junk, 24 May 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Bought this in August 09, so it's just less than 2 years old. Worked fine, with good quality prints.

Then two days ago it started to think it was jammed all the time, even when it wasn't. Finally it did suck in a piece of paper that is completely jammed and won't come out. There's no way of taking the back or bottom off to remove the bits. It can't be worn out, - we're relatively low volume users and have only had two or three ink cartridges in it.

Faults with the paper sensor are widely reported in both reviews and on the net. Wished I seen them before I bought it. I'd suggest you do not buy this printer until you see a review from someone whose had it greater than 24 months that says it's still working. All the 4/5 star reviews are from short term owners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Moving Account, 22 July 2010
An excellent book that provides access to the Imperial War Museum's oral records for the 1918 period. The overall thesis can't be faulted, despite the attempt by one reviewer to do so. The book puts the contribution of all the allied forces in context and in the process steps on a few toes and misconceptions. It emphasises the British achievement in creating a viable tactical repsonse to trench warfare and explains it very clearly. Acknowledgement is given to all those invovled in due measure, but ultimately it was the forces under Haig that solved the problem of the Western Front which is still a difficult concept for many to grasp who still think that "All Quiet on the Western Front" counts as history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Small Town Genius, 7 July 2010
This is a simply wonderful album. Honed through numerous performances in front of their home town fans in the back's of pubs this is an almost perfect album. Generally overlooked by the music (even the Indies) it just goes to show it's hard to succeed if you come from somewhere unfashionable.

And that's the joy of this album. It's about growing up and living in a small town where there aren't any bright lights and there's no real venue for big bands and the best we can do is chain-pubs. BUT WE STILL LOVE IT. As they say in "St Crispin's Got Our Backs" - "Our Home Town's Not That Bad".

The song from BH 90210 (45 Forever) is a work of genuine song-writer's craft that desreves better than to be remembered for that.

Where ever you come from if it isn't London, Leeds or Liverpool this album will speak to you with it's clever lyrics, beautiful tunes and its mixed bag of styles.

And if you do come from such places, buy it anyway and enjoy.

It deserves your attention.
