2.0 out of 5 stars Sloppy proof-reading, 13 April 2016
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The reason for the low score is that the kindle version of this book is badly flawed. Things start well enough, with almost no problems in HSK1 and HSK2 ("mā ma" appears as "mā m??" under "旁 边 [páng biān] side" in HSK2, but that's about it). However, the rot sets in at "聊 天 [liáo tiān] to chat" in HSK3 where "zhèng" in the pinyin version of the example appears as "zhèn??". Thereafter "ge" in pinyin appears as "?括?" and "g" in other pinyin words almost always appears as "??".

Someone needs to proof-read the kindle version properly and fix this (and other less important problems, like the gratuitous underlinings which appear hightlighted in blue when displayed using kindle for PC). And a native English speaker needs to go through the English translations and re-translate several of them into proper English instead of: "She likes a diligent bee when she works." and "A ruined war is over." (to give a couple of examples - and there are plenty more).

3.0 out of 5 stars Random button doesn't work properly, 16 Feb. 2016

The cards themselves are OK; however, the Random button doesn't generate anything like a random sequence but keeps throwing up the same cards. This happens on both my kindle and my PC.

2.0 out of 5 stars Needs page number search, 11 Jan. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a very helpful book for beginners like me, but the kindle version suffers from a serious flaw: the indexes at the back rely on page numbers for finding characters beyond than the basic 1067, but there is no obvious way of finding a given page as the "Page" box on "Go to Page or Location" is disabled and the page numbers aren't shown in the text. It's not all that easy to find the basic characters either, though it's not too bad using "kindle for PC" since you can drag the scroll bar and watch the character numbers (which are shown) change. Until this problem is fixed, you'd be better off buying the treeware version (which I'd probably give the full five stars).

1.0 out of 5 stars Garbled text, 29 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This Kindle edition may be cheap, but it's hopelessly garbled. After the first few paragraphs the text starts to get out of order (as you can see by comparing with other Kindle editions, e.g. Everyman or Swift).

For example we have:
"Nevertheless Macmaster moved in drawing rooms that, with long curtains, blue china plates, large-patterned wallpapers and large, quiet mirrors, sheltered the long-haired of the Arts. And, as near as that that was his due, and he would accept the tribute in silence."

and, later on:
"Sometimes Sir Reginald would say: "You're a perfect encyclopaedia of exact material knowledge, Tietjens," and Tietjens thought a son of the manse."

with chunks of text misplaced in between.

One hopes the printed version is better. At least with the Kindle edition, you've only lost £0.77, but you'd do better to buy one of the others from the start.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless on our local suburban foxes, 11 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Perhaps our local suburban foxes have previously been subjected to Scoot and become used to it, but it had absolutely no effect, even at the highest recommended concentration.
