For me John Hughes is one of the most iconic directors of the '80s; and arguably this is his best movie. Of course the premise is well covered both here and on IMDB, so I won't bore you by recounting it. Although it's an excellent comedy it is sufficient to say that the main focus of the story is the relationships between the titular 'Breakfast Club'. Which is done brilliantly with some stellar performances.

I grew up in the '80's, and I'm well aware that every generation looks back on their own popular culture as the best there's ever been. I'm not naive enough to think that I'm actually right about that. However what you do see is that movies were more creative then. It was possible to have a great story that was new. That wasn't a remake, or re-boot (I hater that phrase).

I can recommend this film very highly, it's enjoyable, funny, and will take you back to your own experiences at school.

I find the Apollo program fascinating, and this DVD is an excellent way to get an insight into what our exploration of the Moon meant to the people who went there. The footage is incredible, particularly stirring with Brian Eno's soundtrack. The format has been covered elsewhere, but for me it works; though I did put the subtitles on so I could keep track of who was talking and what mission I was watching. If I had one criticism it would be that the journey back to Earth was barely covered. Which is a shame.

I recently learned that the Apollo program is the most money humanity has ever spent on anything that was not devoted to war. And from watching this it's very easy to get caught up in the 'wonder' of the whole experience. Of course there's nothing controversial here, but that's fine for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Blu-Ray, some of the footage and anecdotes are genuinely moving, and it's brilliantly edited together. Watching it again I find it incredible that the general public had lost interest in the Apollo program after Neil Armstrong's "One small step". What could one possibly be doing that is more interesting than travelling to the Moon?

But I digress. This is not particularly informative from a technical perspective, but it's fantastic from a 'human' perspective. And if. like me, that's what you want, then it's perfect.

I found the title of this book both fascinating and hilarious so downloaded it to my Kindle; and I'm so glad I did. What I expected was a cheap laugh, something to keep me entertained for a couple of train journeys. But this was much better written than I would have expected. Joel Snape creates a believable world with heroes that I really wanted to survive. The plot moves along at a great pace and doesn't let up until the end, great pacing with some fantastic scenes, there's even a tip of the hat to Sherlock Holmes for fans.

In conclusion a great story, well rounded characters and a bargain at 2. I can't wait for a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Mama's not the Law, I am The Law", 23 Feb 2013

I'll start by saying that this film is simply fantastic. As a Dredd fan since the '80s this is almost exactly what I had in my brain for the movie. There's no pointlessly long introduction, no filler, just Mega City One & the Judges. Karl Urban is literally perfect as Dredd. No ridiculous attempt at character development, just Dredd as he should be. The Law, nothing more nothing less. I've often disagreed with those who say Dredd is humourless, he isn't; it's just the humour is so dry it makes the Cursed Earth look like an oasis. Urban nails that too. It's worth highlighting Olivia Thirlby as Anderson too, a great foil to Dredd in every way.

So the setting and casting are brilliant, but what about the story? Well, that's fantastic too. It's simple, but then some of the best Dredd stories are. Basically a homicide investigation that goes wrong. It's tight, just the right length and because of the low budget focuses just on what's essential to tell the story. The end has been criticised as an anti climax, but that's the point. Ma-ma is just another perp in an ordinary day for the Judges, not worthy of any more attention than that deserves.

In summary a great action movie and an outstanding Dredd movie. I can't recommend this too highly. That we live in a world that has spawned 7 Fast and Furious movies and about 8 Resident Evil movies, whilst this film may be the only Dredd film we get, tells you all you need to know about Hollywood. Personally I'm excited to see what Alex Garland & Karl Urban could do with the Dark Judges.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good boy Jason, Mummy's proud of you, 24 Aug 2012

Horror movies have become so full of predictable scenarios and cliche it's often difficult to remember that these are the films that started most of them. I love the Friday the 13th movies, they'll never win any Oscars; and certainly the quality dropped off in some of the sequels, but overall I find the stories brilliantly entertaining and, in some cases, quite inventive. As far as I am aware Jason Vorhees is the only person to turn a sleeping bag into a murder weapon.

It's quite refreshing to see a horror movie that isn't purely 'torture-porn', something that wants to entertain and amuse, rather than shock. I liken Friday the 13th to a big dumb dog, not the smartest or best looking animal; but it just wants to make you happy and keep you entertained.

But a few beers, invite over some buddies and sit back and enjoy.

I went to see this in the cinema with a somewhat reserved approach; I had read some rather poor reviews and was expecting something of a car wreck. However as a massive space exploration fan, the Apollo missions in particular, I found the concept irresistible. And overall I enjoyed it. I'd agree that the movie could have been better paced and the found footage style maybe didn't suit the concept, but I had a good time.

If, like me, you prefer your horror tense and somewhat chilling (the human imagination is far better than any tawdry Hollywood effects) then this is great. For me it harks back to an older style of horror film like Quatermass, introduce a concept, slowly build up the tension and, the golden rule, less is more.

I'd recommend this if you like your movies in that style. If you prefer 'torture-porn' or explosive gore-fests then this isn't for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply amazing, 7 Sep 2011
This review is from: 21 (Audio CD)
My Wife purchased this album for me as a birthday gift. She knows I like strong female vocals and in her own words "I took a gamble you would like this." She needn't have worried; this is an amazing album. Although all the tracks are fantastic a particular favourite of mine is "Someone Like You". What a wonderful piece of music that never fails to bring a tear to my eye. Having watched her performance at the Brit Awards in 2011 I can only concur with James Corden, this is for anyone who has ever had a broken heart. Absolutely brilliant, and what an incredible talent Adele is.

We've all been there. You upgrade your phone to the new 'better' model, only to find it doesn't have some of the functionality of your old device. You'll soon find a work around, but the frustration is always there.

Not so with this box of joy! I won't comment on the technical aspects, that's covered far better elsewhere. All I can say is that this phone is, without doubt, the best mobile phone I have ever owned. There is nothing that I could do before but am no longer able to, and as a smart phone it's great. I can now read books (through Kindle), play PS1 games (through FPse), edit Word documents plus a whole host of other things. I love the Android Market and OS, yes there aren't as many Apps as on the App Store, but the majority here are free and the number grows every day.

I have no hesitation in recommending this, I'm pretty sure I'd actually experience some serious withdrawal symptoms if I ever had to go without mine. Buy it now, together we can stop Apple taking over the World and becoming Microsoft v.2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Calling International Rescue!, 6 April 2011
There's not much that hasn't been said about the Thunderbirds, so I'm not going to focus too much on the stories. This is a show that has long become ingrained in popular culture, and with good reason. The stories are well written, the models are achingly cool and although it is clearly a product of the 1960s it still looks good today.

I remember watching repeats of this as I grew up, it's always on television somewhere. Each show would have me on the edge of my seat watching as our Heroes saved the day. So imagine my joy when my Wife purchased the boxset for me as a Valentines gift. I love the Thunderbirds, it represents something quietly noble and worthy. A rich billionaire and his family who, rather than invest billions in a football team, risk their lives and fortune to save those who are in trouble with no thought of reward or recognition. But on it's own this wouldn't be enough. The character of the program shines through each episode and the really do stand the test of time; and that's what keeps this program so popular.

Sit back and enjoy this, I guarantee that children of all ages, no matter when they were born, will love this boxset.
