Another superb Bond thriller which tells us much about underwater life

5.0 out of 5 stars RC child abuse, 28 Jun. 2014
Chilling. As more and more cases of abuse come to light, one wonders where it is all going to end. Editors who are reported as being interested only in Catholic abuse cases don't exactly help as they give ammunition to those who love to hate the Catholic Church while contributing little to the debate.

The Second Rumpole Omnibus: 2nd
The Second Rumpole Omnibus: 2nd
Price: £8.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Rumpole Omnibus 2, 2 Jun. 2014
Superb stories about Rumpole: I have always been a fan of John Mortimer and of Rumpole and his colourless fellow-barristers, especially those three Chambers wives - in descending order of obnoxiousness, Marigold Featherstone, Phillida Erskine-Brown and Hilda Rumpole - in her way, rather sweet.

The War of the Worlds
The War of the Worlds

5.0 out of 5 stars Invasion from Mars, 25 April 2014
A brilliant sci-fi written before man had learnt to fly, or invented rocket propulsion. The action taking place in Surrey lent the story an immediacy it would not have otherwise had.

Malice Aforethought
Malice Aforethought
Price: £4.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Malice aforethought, 18 April 2014
Richly satisfying story of a hen-pecked husband getting rid of his rebarbative wife and then, fired with enthusiasm, trying to get rid of equally obnoxious girl he had fancied; the vicar's horrid little daughter stirring thing up with the result that the husband is eventually arrested and charged with murder; found not guilty - and the terrifying twist at the end - Oh, you'll have to read it.

A Clergyman's Daughter (Penguin Modern Classics)
A Clergyman's Daughter (Penguin Modern Classics)
Price: £7.99

5.0 out of 5 stars A clergyman's daughter, 14 Sept. 2013
This book is very readable, and is in fact a polemic. It depicts the daughter of the rector of a run-down parish in East Anglia who ends uphop-picking, then with the down-and-outs on the streets of London, then in a third-rate school in South London.

Same applies to this as to Part I: the way most of the action took place in the dark made the film difficult to watch. I liked the way He Who Is Going To Be Named Whether He Likes It Or Not - the extraordinarily rebarbative Tom Riddle - got his comeuppance when his own Killing Curse backfired on him.

I love the story, the acting - but I did not find either of these films easy to watch as most of the action seems to take place in the dark. Dobby's death was very sad.

What really attracted me to this disc was Gardiner's superb attack in the scherzo to the Seventh, but they are also magnificent recordings generally.

It was just what I wanted. I've always loved Jessel's Parade of the Tin Soldiers - amusing juxtaposition with Pierne's March of the little Lead Soldiers. Also very taken with Lincke's Glow-worm gavotte
