4.0 out of 5 stars Decent text but starting to feel dated..., 12 Sep 2010
As an English teacher I bought this book to help me teach the A level Lit original writing module. Although there are some useful pointers in here and it is clearly laid out, it does feel a bit dated in terms of the current exam structure; I guess this is inevitable in the context of how fast the exam boards are changing these days but I was still a little disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars The (Un)grateful Dead, 11 Sep 2010
I've read all the Torchwood tie-in novels and have to say that this wasn't one of my favourites. The concept of a Cardiff overrun with flesh-eating walking dead is a good one, however it just seemed to go on for too long and to be too generic, both in terms of Torchwood and Zombie tales. Mark Morris is a strong writer, but this just didn't grip me, and the innuendo between Ianto and Jack just seems a little tired and stale. I admit that if this was one of the first Torchwood books I had read I would probably have felt more kindly disposed towards it, but hopefully any future novels (and there are none planned to date) will reflect the TV series' mandate to change direction and become fresher.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome product, 11 Sep 2010
This is the kitchen-note enabling product I've been waiting years for. Not too big or too small, sticks firmly on your fridge, the liquid-chalk pen is clear and easy to write with...It's superb!

4.0 out of 5 stars Didn't quite conquer me, 11 Sep 2010
While this is undoubtedly a stylish and occasionally witty movie from the infernally inventive Edgar Wright, there is often the feeling that style trounces substance completely throughout. Michael Cera - superb in Juno as the dreamy, metrosexual love interest, just isn't a versatile enough actor to carry the film this early in his career; he is also surrounded by a host of scene-stealing supporting players such as Kieran Culkin's supremely bitchy gay room-mate and Jason Schwartzmann's effete but sinister 'evil ex #7', and you have to ask why so many beautiful women constantly fall for such a wimpy slacker as our hero.

The best bits of this movie were always going to be the fight scenes, and they don't disappoint, with slo-mo karate kicks, deliciously graphic comic-book style sound effects and leeringly cartoonish bad guys. Overall I would say there are far worse ways of spending a couple of hours and Wright continues to show why he is already considered British film's new auteur in chief.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, 9 Sep 2010
Having used Cat Mate products before I was confident that this would be a good buy, and I wasn't disappointed. The fitting instructions were clear and easy to follow, while the product itself seems robust and user-friendly. Since fitting I have had no problems, and our cat seems much happier now that she can come and go at will!

4.0 out of 5 stars Left me a little cold, 3 Sep 2010
Recently I've listened to several Patrick Troughton era audio adaptations and I have to say that this has been my least favourite. As with the others I remember the original Target novel well and enjoyed Brian Hayles' novelisation as much as any by the brilliant Malcolm Hulke, however it did seem somewhat rushed when compared to some others in the range and for me Frazer Hine's narration didn't help. Hines is an enthusiastic and competent narrator but he is so eager to get his words out that it just blunts the edges of what could have been another outstanding audio book.

These gripes aside it is an atmospheric recording with Hines redeeming himself through some excellent voice impersonations and with a few well-chosen and subtle sound effects incorporated to add depth.

Other than echoing the comments made by the previous reviewers I have nothing else to say! However, I'll definitely be buying these batteries again as they're significantly cheaper than on the high street.

Monsters of Men (Chaos Walking)
Monsters of Men (Chaos Walking)

5.0 out of 5 stars A satisfying conclusion to a great trilogy, 26 Aug 2010
This novel continues directly on from The Ask and the Answer (Chaos Walking), and is a fitting finale to Patrick Ness' mind-blowing Chaos Walking trilogy. As Todd and Viola strive to bring peace to the land, the nefarious Mayor has other ideas, and with the opressed Spackle finally turning on their persecutors it seems that bloody war is inevitable.
Fast-paced, gripping, uniquely written and intelligent, the novel subtly presents themes that echo aspects running through our own society and packs a powerful emotional and social punch. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aaaaah, 26 Aug 2010
After some bum-numbing excursions on my new road bike I just had to find something to ease the discomfort - padded cycle shorts didn't cut the mustard but this baby is fantastic. Easy to fit, with a drawstring to tighten on the saddle, the gel just makes things oh so much better.
