Alan Turing. A very interesting book about a controversial person. I found the details of his early life fascinating, and the work on breaking the enigma code is written in a clear style which even I can understand. I have visited Blechley and so was able to picture the stark huts and surrounding area. There has also been quite a lot of comment in the papers recently about his personal life and subsequent suicide, which adds to the interest.

A good old-fashioned romance and an easy relaxing read. However I found the last section pretty contrived and needlessly dramatic.

A good read - fast moving, lots of misleading clues and relationships and a plot that was continuously interesting. However I found the conclusion, with the action on the Golden Bridge totally unbelievable ....only there to justify the title?

Oh dear, oh dear! I only managed the first few chapters of this novel, which reminded me of the penny dreadful magazines my Granny used to read. Totally implausible plot, steriotypical characters and not worth reading to find out exactly how the village maiden gets Milord. My mistake!

This is a true story told simply without literary pretensions, and all the more moving for that, and the fact that there are authentic documents included as an appendix also adds to the authenticity of the narrative. Having read the book I do not want to see the film as I am sure it will be sensationalised.

Intensely interesting and yet baffling book. Are we meant to believe that all the lives described actually happened, and that the main character 'died' again and again? Or is it intended to show that at certain moments in life there is a kind of choice about how to go forward? I have read glowing reviews of this book but am still confused.

The Title is a tease, as of course Mr Darcy does not appear, and the book is a mildly amusing account of a group of Jane Austen afficionados spending a weekend on a literary course at a stately home, with a murder thrown in for good measure.
Easy reading, instantly forgettable

A totally absorbing book, with the details of the author's early years and fascination with trains enlivening a very ordinary life, which changes dramatically with the fall of Singapore. The description of the camps , the squalid conditions, the punishments and callous torture of the prisoners is horrifying, but not sensationalised, and the long preparation to the final journey to meet Lomax's main torturer is made more moving by its restraint.

Not to my liking. The descriptions of the deaths are too gory and the main female is totally unappealing and barely believable.

An interesting story of an American ex soldier suffering from amnesia and rescued from a burning ambulance by a French woman living alone on the family farm having lost all her family in the war. As he has no idea who he is or where he came from, she names him 'Christophe' and they scratch a living from the devastated soil, eventually living as man and wife in what remains of the farmhouse. Into their lives come a couple of American Red Cross workers, who with the best of intentions discover his identity and arrange for him to be hospitalised and then sent back to his family in America. What happens when he gets there makes for a story of divided loyalties and conflict, although the happy ending does not quite ring true.
