This Time Next Door (Oakland Hills Book 2)
This Time Next Door (Oakland Hills Book 2)
Price: £2.99

5.0 out of 5 stars well written light hearted easy reading, 29 May 2013

Really enjoyed this funny free novel with very likeable characters and the odd twist and turn to keep it interesting. Was disappointed to find out there had been at least one earlier book with some of these characters and although this story read perfectly well as stand alone I would have liked to have read them in chronological order. I will certainly be buying the others.

didn't expect much as it was free but this was a book with an unusual heroine / a very varied cast / great humour / well written dialogue and a load of twists and turns. I immediately checked for more by this author.

2.0 out of 5 stars not my style, 11 May 2013

writing is good and clever but blunt and savage without leading into the characters (perhaps deliberate) but I'd like more writing input more scene setting more involvement.

I enjoyed this book - wry humour / good language skills and descriptions / likeable and believable characters. Will definitely read more by this author....and good proof reading which is becoming rarer with Kindle books. Great not to have to mentally correct problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting thinking !, 22 April 2013

Some of the descriptions are lyrical - some over wordy - some take away from the tension - this needed to be better edited to hone the drama. The book could have been pruned carefully by about 10% to make it more tense. Characters are well drawn for the most part and you do want to get to the essence of the story behind the story. Some poor proof reading too e.g. what should be a new chapter starts immediately from the last sentence about a different location and different characters / story jumps back and forward so you need to check dates - where given ! Some wrong words used too - 'taught' instead of 'taut'....these detracted from the book and my concentration. BUT I will definitely read any sequel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Little Women go to sea!!, 15 April 2013

Author can write but there were glaring errors in spelling, grammar and occasionally simply the totally wrong word altogether. Seamen characters did not ring true - way too courteous and educated / accommodation on board any boat is described as cabins and the deck is not called the floor. It displayed limited knowledge about sea going too. I will finish the book but at 63% read I am not doing it because I am enthralled but because it is rude not to acknowledge someone else's efforts...after all I have never submitted a manuscript for publishing. I just wish this one had been better proof read and edited. One girl's eyes turned from dark brown to brightest sapphire while enroute !!! I tried hard to identify the year these events took place unsuccessfully. Some of the girls' behaviour was extremely inappropriate for any time in 19th or early 20th Century, some of the language was modern too - no lady would have used the word sex at any time in this era.

5.0 out of 5 stars really entertaining light hearted read, 20 Mar. 2013

A very well written punny and funny book exploring the over the top involvement of parents and other adults in junior sports in USA. I have 2 grandsons who just started baseball last year - some of this imagery was absolutely spot on and I could relate to most of the action well. I thought the various characters were great and interaction all rang true and was well depicted/ Now looking for another book by this author.
