A great book for a toddler to learn new words. I bought one for my daughter over 25 years ago and have since bought one for each of my grandchildren. A great source of pictures and words to encourage both vocabulary and conversation.

Test of Resolve
Test of Resolve
by Peter Murphy
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.02

4.0 out of 5 stars Dilemma, Deceit and Conflict, 10 Mar. 2014
This review is from: Test of Resolve (Paperback)
This is one of the best Peter Murphy novels I have read. It has been cleverly constructed with two story lines intermingled into one which kept my attention to make this a well balanced page turning novel.
The story centres around the main character Ellen Travathan who is the first female President of the United States. Ellen started out as a university professor and progressed to have two cabinet posts before becoming the Vice President to Steve Wade. Steve Wade became involved in an affair that was thought to have compromised the nations security and was impeached. However, after he was shot by one of his own supporters Ellen became President and Commander in Chief, although some politicians questioned her ability and doubted her patriotism.
Ellen quickly appointed Vice President Ted Lazenby. Attorney General Ken Hunt, Secretary of Defence Raul Gatierrez, Director of FBI kelly Smith and Press Secretary Jeff Morris all of which feature in the story as it unfolds.
While in power, everything has worked out well Ellen has gained the respect of both her colleagues and opponents and feels that she can divulge the fact that she is a lesbian and she has been having a relationship with Kay Ryan who has a daughter Dani. She does this on National TV and immediately gives her opponents some advantage over the next election.
However, with all the political implications there is another story developing which involves members of the Svatanta Kashmir, Kali and Samir. The Svatanta Kashmir are a dedicated group to freeing Kashmir from Pakistani and Chinese Interference and want Kashmir to be under Indian control. No one knows who they are or where they are based but they have the reputation of being efficient and ruthless.
Kali and Samir kidnap the Presidents step daughter Dani in Cambridge in England.
This then leads to the two stories intermingling one involving the Presidents duties and her personal dilemma and that of the kidnapping and finding of her step daughter which involves the British authorities MI6 and MI5.
Peter Murphy's knowledge of the American and British systems comes over well and the story flips from one country to the other as the plot unfolds and would make a great movie. The way the urgency of finding Dani before the deadline is portrayed well and makes this a page turning novel.
I particularly like the way Peter Murphy has given the background to the characters involved as this makes them more lifelike and realistic. I also, like the way he highlighted the conflict and injustice in Kashmir giving a somewhat if misplaced sympathetic outlook.
However, if I had to criticise it I feel that the coincidences that happened to find Dani are too well timed and also, the number of characters in the book especially on the american side tend to be numerous. However this does not distract the reader from the plot, its just a case of remembering who is who and what role they take.
Highly recommended.

Higher Duty, A (Ben Schroeder)
Higher Duty, A (Ben Schroeder)
by Peter Murphy
Edition: Paperback
Price: £6.43

4.0 out of 5 stars A Higher Duty., 14 Feb. 2014
I really enjoyed this novel. It starts in 1960 when due to some drunken antics by a group of Rugby students at Cambridge a student dies. However, Clive Overton, the student responsible escapes prosecution due to his father's position and intervention.
The story then moves on two years to bring in two London law firms . Bernard Wesley's QC's chambers is the main firm where Kenneth Gaskell agrees to act for Anne Dougherty in her divorce. Anne Dougherty is an old friend and since her husband Phillip had not only assaulted her but tried to break into her parents' home, he is confident that she'll get custody of her son Simon. However, Gaskell starts an affair with Anne and her husband's solicitor finds out, giving Miles Overton QC the opportunity to renegotiate terms of the divorce settlement and ruin the reputation of Wesley's chambers.
The main characters in the book are described in detail making them very realistic. Apart from the general story there is an insight into the prejudices of the time and the marked differences between the upper middle classes and their assumptions of the working class. At the time, the judicial system was mainly dominated by white, privileged Oxbridge graduates so the story portrays the pupillage and the progression into chambers of a female Harriet Fisk and a Jewish boy, Ben Schroeder. Therefore, entwined in the main theme of the story, we have some other courtroom cases involving both Harriet and Ben and the discrimination and intimidation highlighted between the main characters in Chambers as they discuss who to offer a place to.
I felt particularly sorry for Arthur Creighton. He gave so much to the Chambers and was respected by so many of his colleagues but when he got into financial difficulties he was given an ultimatum.
I felt the story started quite dramatically with the prank that went tragically wrong and the first five chapters made an excellent introduction to the character of Miles Overton and his sense of superiority to manipulate events.
I also like how this incident is put to one side while the events of the divorce are portrayed but then is reintroduced at a later date by Bernard Wesley QC as he tries desperately to save his Chambers and the careers of his colleagues.
A very interesting story giving an insight into how the legal system and the world of judges, lawyers and solicitors operated in the 1960's. I was keen to read page after page to see how the events unfolded and was intrigued to see how it all ended often reading well into the night.
Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling!, 30 Aug. 2013
This is the first Tim Weaver novel I have read and I was not disappointed.
At first, I thought the first few chapters were very disjointed, but as I continued to read through the book I understood the relevance of this in bring certain elements of past events and there bearing on the story written.
The novel is set in two contrasting areas the quiet peaceful areas of Devon and flashy, glitzy area of Las Vegas. Tim Weaver's description of both areas are very life like and without going overboard gives the reader an insight into the environment, sights and sounds. I particularly liked the way he described the desolated village and weather which gave an atmospheric air to the story.
The main character David Raker is an investigative journalist who is recovering from a brutal attack from which he nearly died, but when he is contacted by an old friend, Emily Ling, to find out what happened to her family, who went missing in very mysterious circumstances, he finds himself compelled to help and investigate their disappearance.
David Raker comes across as a really genuine caring guy who basically has nothing to gain except the satisfaction of knowing he has helped others find their missing loved ones.
The characteristic traits of the other characters that feature are also well described some dark and sinister, others menacing, greedy, depressed and disheartened giving the readers an array of individual qualities and personalities.
As I said at the beginning the first few chapters were disjointed but as the story unfolds Weaver uses this method excellently to go from the present to the past. This I feel enhances the context to help the readers understand the relevance of what and how things happened in the past, have impacted and affected the present circumstances in the novel.
Raker delves into the past events and uses an array of methods, some unconventional and some illegal to help him solve the mystery of the families disappearance. Unfortunately, in doing so he puts himself into grave danger as his investigation unfolds.
Weaver has portrayed some historical facts within the story to enhance the plot and there are so many twists and turns throughout the chapters to add to the overall suspense and tension. There is even a surprising twist at the end
Overall an imaginative story excellently executed to provide a very enjoyable page turning novel. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars A handy addition, 29 Jun. 2013

This is a very useful addition that has been fitted in to the shower cubicle. It has four selves but we have only used 3. It was easy to assemble apart from the loaded spring which I feel let the product down hence 3 stars. For me the organiser doesn't fit tight enough and feel it could easily become dislodged if overloaded. Excellent service though from seller. Very quick delivery.
